Excellent video as usual Mr. King. I always wait for your videos in-between the rounds. Tata Steel Chess has been saving Classical Chess for many years now. When other tournaments were filled with "just draw and get paycheck" mentality super GM-s, this tournament has been a torch for classical chess really.
I could see that Rustam borrowed the idea from the Moscow (3. Bb5+ Bd7) where French structures without light-squared are a fairly common occurence. - In comparison, one could even argue that Black's position in the French is more cramped, with the Bd7 being of little help, as it is so often the case.
6...a6 does indeed discourage Bb5 :) But there is obviously more to 6 a4 than that. The a5 push can be annoying in some positions. I think 7 Be2 should be the correct continuation.
Poor Leon. He blundered a won position in the first round badly, if I recall. And now, smashed in the opening. A rough initiation to the top group. Abdusattorov's novelty reminds me of some positions that arise in the Sicilian Be2 opening. I know, you're not a fan of it GM King. I do like it for speed chess to take people out of book. It keeps a lot of pieces on the board and becomes strategic. Sometimes, a4 and tension on white's "French Advanced" pawn structure are a common theme in some lines. So, as odd as it seems for the "French", it seems pretty normal to me. Thanks for analyzing. Very interesting.
Hello, do you think Nimzowitsch would have approved of the Bb5 idea (I'm thinking in terms of an overprotection strategy, removing an attacker) or am I barking at the wrong tree?
He was born in Goa, which was a Portugese colony for 450 years until 1961. He is not the only prominent Indian chess player with a European sounding name - see also WGM Mary Ann Gomes.

Your passion for the game is just the best. Thanks so much for your videos Daniel.

So do we call it French Defence: Abdusattorov variation or French Defence: Kasimdzhanov variation?
Uzbek Variation?
i can sea that after the worl championship we are getting to see more french openings in high level chess and i like it
Great game thanks
Beautiful attacking play from Abdusattarov. Thanks Daniel.
Is Qb6 main line though? I seem to remember Jon Ludvig Hammer recommends it in his Chessable course

When Danny says "brave" I think he means it in the sense of Sir Humphrey in Yes, Prime Minister, i.e. to mean foolhardy! 🙂
Of course ... B.d7 instead of ... Q.b6! You already mentioned that in your Powerplay DVD on the French ;-)
5:20 I think bxc6 is much stronger, because you can challenge whites center with c5.
I love it, when GMs prepare a weird, wrong-looking move that works because of a few Alpha Zero lines :D
1:55 I think you mean 'Is this a Martin moment?'.
Thanks Daniel. Nice game. After 6.a4, isn't 6...a6 a good antidote, cutting across the Bb5 ideas?

Agreed, I would argue it depends on level of play. ..a6 seems a good antidote for club level, but after 7.Bd2 white can be happy on Master level?

Castling queenside must be an error for Black. stockfish 17 thinks so.
That happens, when you think "show me, what you've got" and you castel long against a top class player.
Do you know Leon's background? - doesn't sound Indian at all.

As Indian as Vindaloo :)
He has an almost-Portuguese surname (Mendonça would be 100% Portuguese) due to being originally from Goa
He's From an Indian Christian background
