Read the lyrics to 1 to 10 carefully. It's meant to be a creepy, insidious song about someone who is too possessive within the relationship, not a sweet song. That's why it ties in with the rest of the (dark, grim) album. That bridge shift and the overall distortion throughout the song is there to cue you in that all is not what it appears to be.
The composition strangely parallels "For Me", another song that has a twist in the lyrics. For Me starts off with a melancholy vibe ("the me in the mirror about to cry") but ends on a heartwarming note (You've done well. I'll tell myself, for me.) 1 to 10 starts off sounding heartwarming- at least from the lyrics- but ends up feeling like a rather toxic mentality.
Yes, and the line "Nobody loves you more than me, baby" is kinda manipulative actually.
Like Day6 mentioned, The Book of Us series talks about the different stages of the human relationships and The Demon is the toxic side of them. I think they did a great job in touching on the different toxic aspects that can end a relationship. In 1 to 10 it is that sense of manipulation and wanting them only for yourself, while in Afraid it is more about having a toxic relationship with your own self that does not allow you to make the other person happy. Like always, Day6 write such amazing songs because of the incredible amount of detail in the lyrics and song
Completely agree. On my first listen, the first thing I wrote down about 1 to 10 was, "One Direction song???", because not only the sound overall, but the one English line I understood and the way they sing everything else also had that whole.........I love you the most and no one can steal you away from me hell yeah......vibe.

Oh i actually thought it was more like a person desperately trying to be EVERY THING for one person even but that's not possible and they end up not satisfied either way. I see the manipulative/insidious meaning now tho
I think it was a genius move for Day6 to make a pause between "nobody loves you, more than me baby" cause it makes things sound manipulative.
As if someone was at first saying "nobody loves you" then adding "more than me baby" to trick them into believing them after putting them down. It is such a genius move. Like, I thin we have to take more as a "Stick with me cause nobody else love you anyway". The way things are phrased is creepy, manipulative and very false.

So true. The first time I heard them sing that line I was like huh? I was so surprised I didnt even notice them say "more than me baby". When I noticed it in the second chorus, I felt relieved at first. But when you think about it it's a really toxic thing to say to someone because they're manipulating someone into thinking they aren't good enough for anyone else.

I love how Dowoon’s drums is getting noticed now but not many knows, Dowoon may not sing that well (range wise) like his hyungs, but Dowoon has deep understanding of his instrument. He is so down to earth saying that he’s not that good when he first started but the fact that his professor recommended him to audition to JYP, just means that his professor knows how good Dowoon is. Dowoon is also a graduate of Applied Music like Sungjin. Dowoon doesn’t stop honing his skills, he uploads his practice on IG every now and then.
I have used drums during my high school days and I can vouch that his drumming skills are fabulous. I always feel his presence through his drums.

I would love to have Umu really analyze Day6's music across the albums and pull out fave parts, details others may have missed, particularly shocking elements etc. It was really fun to see incorporated clips of other songs as examples in this video, also especially the part where the member's voices were highlighted through different tracks!

Umu, I agree that Sungjin's voice sounds heavenly when he introduces the prechorus in Afraid. Like it was meant for him to sing that part. I know he wrote the song, so the song definitely suits him for sure. Another song I think his voice sounds amazing on is Colors when he sings the chorus. I just love it so much!
Afraid makes me tear up so often. I also think I like the English version of Zombie a little more. I feel like I get more emotional. Also I would love a DAY6 interview and that has definitely been a question I’ve really been curious about. Seriously, how do they preserve their voices?!

MYDAY, the boys of DAY6 are back with their 6th mini album The Book of Us: The Demon. There are eight tracks aside from the title, Zombie, including Day and Night, Tick Tock, Love me or Leave me, STOP, 1 to 10, Afraid, and an English version of Zombie.

1. It starts with a Caribbean vibe and continues with it throughout. Dowoon singing towards the end is always a surprise because he seems to gain confidence whenever he does.
2. Title track time! The message of the song aside, it is a really well executed song. Young K starting the song with his lower register made it feel solemn. Jae as well used his lower register, but his holds more interest as we don’t often hear him sing in this range. Wonpil has the most unique voice in the group and I think it definitely helps here. YoungK and Jae trade off after the instrumental break. Sungjin’s raspiness is a definite advantage when we come to the last chorus. Jae and YoungK trade off again as the song ends. As far as my favorite voice, I’ll say Sungjin.
3. My favorite song from the album. From what I was able to get from translations, the ticking sound of a clock holds a deeper meaning than we could even think.
4. For the title of this one, I wanna think of this as a question. Like “Will you Love me or Leave me?” This song definitely picks up the pace of the album overall and it stays like that, well at least the chorus does. My favorite voice in the song belongs to Jae.
5. Can we talk about the maknaes’ drum skills on this one? Damn Dowoon. Singing wise, we started with Jae and transition to Wonpil. Instrumental wise, I really love the guitar work here. YoungK takes the chorus here, and oh my gosh, his voice sounds so powerful. The harmonies were a nice touch too. My favorite voice for this one is Wonpil.
6. 1 to 10 is up next. It would be cool if this song is about self-love. And them rooting for themselves. Now, onto the song itself: Wonpil starts this one. Sungjin has such a smooth tone here, honestly it caught me off guard. YoungK taking the chorus in this was so powerful. Jae’s voice when he says”Nobody love you, more than me baby” was so sexy. YoungK has a falsetto range and he shows it off here. Wonpil has a pretty soft vibe too. My favorite voice in the song belongs to YoungK.
7. Afraid was written by our leader Sungjin. It talks about being afraid of getting into a new relationship and being afraid of contaminating the other person who is the light within his darkness.
8. Younghyun’s part in the beginning when he says let the demon sing me a lullaby hits hard. I truly hope they will all be ok and take this time to rest. I have cried for an hour over the lyrics of this song, the original to me has more raw lyrics which makes it sadder but this just makes it feel more real so they’re both sad but amazing. "I feel like i became a zombie. Not alive but i'm still walkin'". This hits different (and before anyone asks, its not just because the song is in English) . Another lyric that stuck out to me was when Wonpil says “Tell the world that I’m still here tonight”.

But Zombiee!! to me, it deserved to be called as a masterpiece and title track material cos its so unique, with those relatable lyrics and its powerfull melodies, that able to touch many hearts including me
Loved your ending analysis!! Afraid is so emotionally taxing but it also feels cathartic. I think Sungjin's vocals were the stand out on this album, they were incredible. The distorted screaming in LMLM 👌also Day6 back at it again with high quality, catchy but mobile melodies. Gravity was also an INCREDIBLE grower for me and is now my fave along with The Demon. Also when Henry started talking anatomy i lost it (struggling vet student things)

I didn't expect you to like Day and Night the most lol cause same. But honestly I guess it depends on my mood what my favourite is, it's either Day and Night, Love Me of Leave Me, or Afraid.
I do think that although the album was pretty cohesive, a couple of songs can literally fit with Remember Us or Entropy without question which I find interesting.
Also is it only me who got major RADWIMPS vibe with Afraid? Idk what that sound is, can someone tell me that synth? sound at the beginning and at the end of the song? Are those synth guitars? Anyways I think its because of those chords lol.
A LOT of Day6 songs are pretty high, most of their choruses are on the G4-A#4 range which is really high. And just as Umu said they do a lot of riffs and they consistently hit high notes during concerts but also they do a lot of improvised adlibs, like, A LOT it's no joke. Its not even just simple adlibs, they like doing complicated and hard ones but that's actually one of the factors why their concerts are so enjoyable.
So yeah Umu an interview 👀? Cause I would like answers too.
Overall the albums is pretty solid, again. Trust & Listen to Day6 as always.

what day6 did in 1 to 10 is genious, istg i will not stop talking about it! the text painting with the lyrics "nobody loves you... more than me", how there's a pause between the two sentences, it makes the whole song seem more twisted with its ideas of love and dependancy. it's totally intentional and a great example of text painting.
