You Can STOP Barbell Squatting Now | Why you don't need barbell squats for stronger legs
There are a handful of exercises that have been dubbed the creme de la creme of all exercises. One of the most commonly thrown around exercise with this title is the Barbell Squat.
Anyone who is anyone inside of the gym has attempted, wants to attempt or will attempt a barbell squat at some point in their career. I am going to go out on a limb and say that 90% of these people have been told to do them by someone they look up to or feel its the best exercise for their goals after watching someone else do them.
That leaves 10% of people doing them because they can knowingly do them correctly (form and technique) without pain or at risk of near future injury.
It's time that we stop force-feeding the barbell squat to our clients and ourselves. The risk-reward is not worth it and there are far easier exercises to execute with less technique being involved.

It's sad because in the whole fitness community it's seen as weak to take out a big exercise like the back squat from your training and many people just carry on doing them even if it doesn't work for them because "it's what you're supposed to do"
I switched the back squat for dumbbell versions and such. Bulgarian split squats, RDL's, sumo DB deadlift, goblets, DB squats you name it. You can also go running and also hill sprints do build muscle and explosivity. Throw in high rep bodyweight squats and lunges. There's a ton of exercises and guess what, you won't become a worst athlete, the opposite will happen. I also feel that ego lifting isn't as common when working legs with DB or kettlebells.

Great video! I slowly ditched barbell exercises and started doing weighted calisthenics for upper body and goblet squats, elevated lunges and kettlebell swings for lower. Feel much better and have better results than before.

Same here! I used to be big on the whole big 5 exercises and 5x5 craze but it seemed to stop working for me and just became a hassle for my lower back. Switched to calisthenics and dumbbell workouts. Plus I go on runs and maybe hill sprints if I feel like i want to die that day, and I really noticed progress on my legs, plus no pain anymore :)

Loved this! I have been to the gym a few times and having the barbell on my back just felt so unnatural. I couldn't adjust myself properly with the bar, plus I am a heavy guy so the weights just made it even harder. I guess I just fell into the hivemind type of thinking that in order to have a defined lower body, barbell squatting would be needed but I now know I was looking at things completely 1 sided. Body weight squatting as well as goblet squatting should be enough for me, plus the other accessory leg exercises like the leg press.

Thanks for the video. I do the barbell squat using just weigh equal to my bodweight, just for decent core strength and as a warmup for my leg press heavy (for me) set. Primary reason is that I only have one spine and I don't feel like risking ruining the disks from any unnecessary heavy pressure. Another reason is the pain I feel on my lower back when doing them. Unfortunately, I can't squat deep enough without leaning to much forward.

Started back squats back in a day when I started to do strong lifts 5x5. Picked up neck pain with high bar and my wrists hurted like hell with low bar. Like you said there are plenty of coaches online but I couldn't find one in my area to fix my form. So I decided to ditch it, figured as a tall guy it is not gonna be a comfortable exercise for me. Even Arnold said it wasn't his favorite exercise. Dorian Yates said he gave up barbell squatting long time ago and he has a pretty mean leg day. I like kettlebell for leg workout and hex bar deadlift is pretty good also, beside that I run and my legs have gotten stronger and muscular. I have no plans of competing as an Olympic or Power lifter so no desire to load up 1000lbs on my back.

Another thing I noticed with squats is the guys who are really good at them tend to be shorter. I don’t mean that as an insult but I think biomechanics plays a role. If you’re 5’7 and stocky barbell squats are gonna come easier to you. As someone who’s 6’3 with long femurs it feels like an extremely unnatural movement.

I absolutely agree. Barbel squats hit a lot of muscles, but it’s not even a very good exercise for the harmonious development of quads, because of the glutes deactivating the rectus femoris. Leg extensions, sissy squats, Spanish squats, for instance, are much more efficient, in my opinion, and far less risky.

I dont workout on the weekends except for maybe some moderate intensity steady state cardio, as my goal is to lean up some more to get a flat midsection etc. And I hate barbell squats of any kind. I dont like that weight compressing my spine. I also do not do dead lifts of anykind because of lower back issues and pain. What are some alternatives to barbell back squats, dead lifts, straight leg dead lifts, romanian deadlifts etc. I do not have a spotter so i am looking for moves that work the same muscle groups as the dead lift and barbell back squat/ front squat etc. Im just looking to put on some muscle and get leaner. I want to look athletic and lean and healthy.

Great video. I've struggled with low-back pain (right above the pelvis on the left side) for probably a decade now and have no clue what the issue is. For me, I'd like to do squats, but I recognize the risk for injury or aggravating my low back is too great. I'm not a competitive lifter - I just want to get massive and strong legs. I'm hoping that in time, once I solve the riddle with my back, and gain more strength in key areas, and learn how to do the movement safely and properly for my anatomy, I'll be able to do some barbell back squats. For now, I'm fine with a variation of alternative movements and lifts. Right now things I do include hack squats (which I absolutely love), leg presses, leg extensions, leg curls, hyperextensions, trap bar deadlifts, barbell hip thrusts, front barbell box squats.

Even without a good mind muscle connection you will grow. This video is misleading, squats can be used to rehabilitate back injury
