My pms got so bad that I’m now learning all about the menstrual cycle and cooking for hormone balance. Thanks for the awesome content! I like the science!! Thank you!
I came off the pill about 6 months ago after being on it for 7 years. My periods were “normal” (still very painful and heavy) for the first 5 months off the pill. Now I’m finding myself a month late with no signs of it coming back. I’m not pregnant, haven’t changed my diet or lifestyle at all and it’s starting to get discouraging. Looking for diet ideas to hopefully help give my hormone balance a boost!
@EMILY EDWARDS Personally, no. Currently my only hormonal symptoms are some acne during my follicular phase and a few nights of poor sleep during my luteal phase. But these are getting better every month as my body heals from taking hormonal birth control :)
Thanks for talking about this. Too many fitness influencers don’t have a clue about hormones & discount it as a viable factor in losing weight. The only thing that works for me is a full on water fast three days per week & then IF the other days. Plus getting on my spin bike & strength training at the gym.
I think my situation is different because I was yo-yo dieting since the age of 14-27 (about 13 years) so I was ALWAYS ON A DIET. And that messed up my hormones! I’m now eating whatever I want, whole milk, sugar, chocolate, dairy, gluten and my period pain was less and my menstrual cycle is regular for the second time in a row! I think I had too low calories for too long so my body freaked out. Sadly I also gained 15 lbs in the process. So I’m currently 169 lbs and overweight (I’m muscular too) and I want to get down to 135 lbs because I’m 5’ 4” and I think that’s a healthy weight that isn’t too low for me. Bottom line: Chronic undereating/crash dieting and over exercising ruined my hormones especially my thyroid so don’t do it! Dieting is not worth it! The good news: eating more and exercising less (walking, yoga, Pilates, weights) has helped me way more than any supplement would. But supplements can definitely help! I’m eating whatever I want and my stress level has gone down. I also have a theory that I’m holding onto water weight and gained some muscle because I don’t look like I gained 15 lbs of FAT. Maybe it’s overshoot weight? When I was tracking them some days I would force myself to eat 2600 calories a day because that’s how much I need to repair my body. My hormones are slowly balancing out and I have PCOS too. Even if it takes one year I’ll be happy.
This was my exact situation. Take the right supplements and take care of yourself. But don’t crash diet anymore. Your going to have to be patient and let it happen the right way for once. It took 3 years but it was so worth it because now I feel great at 130 lbs and I finally have balance and happiness in my life.
@@britanysteward2024 that’s great news to hear! So glad that you lost weight slowly and I’m hoping it’s the same for me. Even if I lose 10 lbs this year but it’s permanent then I would be super happy. I would rather lose weight slowly and permanently than this horrible yo-yo dieting! I can eat salmon, potatoes and salad with butter and then a few pieces of chocolate and I’m fine. I used to count calories and I’ve found that I feel satisfied at around 1800-2400 calories. Going to just eat intuitively, stop binging and increase protein. I workout 5x a week and aim for 10,000 steps on some days.
@@RosesareRed38 the biggest piece of advice I can give you.. as tough as it is to begin with, try forgetting about the way you look completely. Stop weighing yourself, listen to your body and don’t cut out anything. If you want something have it in moderation. Over a year this will balance out your hormones, help your mind become less stressed and it’ll all workout. But if you catch yourself restricting you gotta stop and find balance again. Over all just change your mindset. Now I eat to fuel myself. So like 80% of my foods are really healthy but it’s unintentional! I just eat them because I feel great not because I have to. It’s tough but like I said so worth it! You got this.
@@britanysteward2024 thank you so much for the kind words. I know I’ve gained weight because of excessive dieting and restricting myself. That doesn’t work and it took me so long to find out. I notice that I crave vegetables and fish now that I’m no longer dieting! It’s crazy. I agree with not focusing on how you look and focusing on how I feel. I haven’t weighed myself for over a week which is a BIG deal for me because I used to weigh myself every hour. I’m focusing on neuro-plasticity and rewiring the brain. I’m breaking old habits and replacing with new ones. It’s simple but hard!
Needed this video!!! If you made a 10 hour video explaining more I would watch it! This kind content isn’t addressed enough! Thank you for the real and the science💖✨
@@MissFitAndNerdy maybe just some general things to do to help keep the thyroid balanced! Or anything at all really. I think I have to get mine checked and I’d just love to know some ways to keep it healthy in case I do have an issue!
@@MissFitAndNerdy yes! Please do a thyroid video. I had to have my thyroid ablated due to Graves Disease and now I’m taking hormone replacements to manage my hypothyroidism. I’d love to hear about a balancing diet that supports thyroid health for both hypo and hyperthyroidism.

So... my hormone profile is kinda fu**ed up right now ^^" I've notiecd that my body and my cycle are slowly but surely coming back to what they were before taking the pill but when I'll be back to a natural state I'll do my best to support my body and ease endometriosis symptoms (or get rid of it if I can!)
I truly appreciate how detailed you explain everything with scientific research to support it! Hormones is such a complex topic to cover! Thanks for the knowledge girl! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Ohh someone has read their Alisa Vitti lol. I'm a new subscriber. I subscribed because we're talking about hormone balance, and that's like so important and soooo not talked about enough.
Thanks for this helpful video! I would love to know - do you change up what you eat based on where you are in your cycle? I was really helped by your video that talked about how to exercise differently based on your cycle, but I would love a greater expansion on the nutrition side of things. Do you need more of certain vitamins/minerals at different times in your cycle? Do you need different amounts of carbs/fats based on the cycle?
fase 1 (period week): iron rich foods, vitamin C (helps asorb the iron), watery foods, less caffeine. fase 2: healthy fats, vitamin C and carbs fase 3 (ovulation): eat estrogyn supporting foods and anti-inflammatory, watch your bloodsugar (more cravings). fase 4: protein and healthy fats. less carbs, watch your bloodsugar, you need a bit more calories in a day to prepare for your period. there are also specific foods you can eat and specific minerals you need more of, nicole.bendayan talks about that on tiktok, and the book fix your period talks about it a lot too. you can get more in depth knowleage there.
I have come across your videos here and there and not sure why I’m not subscribed but hey I am now. I love your videos of how you get to the main points and that working out isn’t always about losing weight and gaining muscle but that it’s overall health is really important.
I have PCOS and was on the pill for it and (sometimes associated?) PMS symptoms, went off in October 2019, had some periods, then stopped from March 2020 until... Last month! one period down, hopefully more to come? I like the way you consolidate information in you videos, even if it's something I know it's very helpful to see it all together. It made me confront that my biggest issues exacerbating existing issues are probably processed sugar, fear of cholesterol (I've known for a while that this is probably irrational but family history just makes me extra irrational), and caffeine. Will I do anything about this? Who knows!
Thank you so much for doing this video. If you do any meal prep or cooking soon I’d love to watch any of it. I live for your what I eat in a day videos too.
Contin: I've caved and went on spironolactone because I don't have the money or resource to see a naturopath/functional doctor right now. I also have a very tough time losing weight. Also would like to see a video on how you track your food. That probably sounds dumb but when trying to stick to whole foods its not something I'm used to. When I've tracked in the past before paleo there was a lot more scanning of boxed/canned labels.
I actually had a very unstable period for 2 years before losing it completely for 10 months! I managed to get my first one last July, and since September I have had it monthly (except one time when it came 2 weeks late). Last month, my bloating really went down so I am waiting for a couple more periods before I can do like a 12-week cut. Any recommendations? I am genuinely really happy because I think that a lot of your videos helped, so thank you!
This came on time! 🙂 I am working on balancing my hormones. I have a pretty regular cycle, but I do get cramps. I drank way more alcohol than normal due to holidays etc and my period was pretty bad. I also have PMDD which is the main issue. I was on hormonal BC for like 10 years. Anyway I started taking Ned hormonal balance a few days ago, let’s see if it helps! 😀 (The Ned magnesium hasn’t dropped lol- I’ve been looking for it like crazy lol)
I hope this video helps you! Definitely check out the books I linked in the description for more support! Most of what I've learned has come from those books :)
@@MissFitAndNerdy I’m reading “In the Flo” now, it’s kind of a lot lol but I’m sticking with it. What do you think about the supplements the author is offering monthly (I keep getting emails about them)?

I have to be dealing hormone imbalances, PMS, horrible acne after my period returned due to amenorrhea caused by overtraining. Literally, same... I lost about 42 pounds. The first 30 were really easy! Then, my period started having issues, I started experiencing PMS and now it’s like I’m exercising just to lose 1/80th of a pound every two weeks when I put in 1-2 hours in the gym every day. It’s rough!
PCOS represent 😂 I've been taking magnesium (it's harder to absorb with PCOS), vitamin D (also harder to absorb) and inositol, because my body doesn't produce as much as I need, and it's helping with insulin resistance! PS: Came for the hormone balancing, stayed for the arugula ASMR and the liver memes
@@oumaimasbooks Yeah, I did some digging online about a year ago and it’s definitely helped regulate my cycle! There are different kinds of inositol, so do some reading to see what may work best for you 😊
My acupuncturist just gave me inositol and Ubiquinol supplements for pcos! I sometimes take a 2000 ui vitamin d supplement, but I hadn’t heard of the magnesium. Have you noticed any changes?
Since you talked about alcohol being poison I highly recommend you make a video about alcohol and added sugar. Having too much sugar has the same effect on your body as alcohol quite literally. That's why there's non alcoholic fatty liver disease as well. Like extra sugar is way more toxic for your body than most people understand and once you know how bad it is for you, its very hard to justify having so much added sugar as most people do.
Start with cutting out things that disrupt hormone balance: alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, sugar, inflammatory fats/foods, etc. This will save you money. Then add the free things: regular movement, sleeping enough, meditation/other stress relievers.
I heard some great food options however it would be very helpful if you list some of the foods. You mention this meat that you get w/ 20% liver in it. Do you make it yourself, do you get it from somewhere? Just one of many examples from the video. The tortilla shells, the kombucha... would love more details please!!!
Don't mind me, just wanted to make one correction: I'm a dietetics student who just wrote a paper on the misconception that cholesterol doesn't affect blood serum cholesterol (it absolutely does) and explored the common ways studies will purposefully skew the results to favour corporate interest (these studies are almost always funded by meat, dairy, and egg industries). I know you love science, as do I, so I thought you'd be interested in this. A quick review on pubmed can be misleading if the study isn't read through thoroughly since the flaws are usually hidden in the methodology, usually using these 2 tricks... 1. Fasting cholesterol - researchers will feed subjects a meal with cholesterol in it but will only measure blood serum cholesterol 8-11 hours after the meal because at that point it would have returned to fasting levels. You want to look to studies which check levels around 2 hours after their meal, as that's when levels typically spike the highest. Super misleading bc people aren't eating just one cholesterol-containing meal per day, they're eating three of them per day. 2. "Cholesterol ceiling" phenomenon - basically studies can use a sample of subjects who already consume high cholesterol diets as the more cholesterol one consumes, the less their postprandial serum levels spike, while the levels of those consuming low-cholesterol diets spike much much higher. Using an unhealthy sample size can skew the results by making it appear as if dietary cholesterol didn't cause a large spike - when in reality the subject is experiencing a constant high level of cholesterol and can escape statistical significance as a result. In these studies, healthy subjects who consume low cholesterol diets (and inevitably experience a high spike) are removed from the studies as outliers or labelled "hyperresponders". So the best studies to look at are ones with subjects following a variety of diets, if the study doesn't include subjects who follow a low-cholesterol diet you just won't get an accurate look at how high their serum cholesterol levels spike.
I've heard you mention coffee in a few videos. I'm a huge coffee addict. Do you have a video all about the negative effects of caffeine (to give me a kick to reduce my intake) and anything you do recommend for a much healthier boost of energy? I know I really need to cut down on the coffee, but I'm a young mum with a toddler and a high-pressure job - I feel like I need caffeine just to keep me going some days.
I’m here with you! Young mom, with toddler, but I’m stay at home and I need a boost to keep up with little one and pre workout for a heavy workout.... now I need to rethink all this
Awesome vid as usual Marisa! I was wondering if you normally eat snacks between meals as well, or just the big meals? Eating just a few big meals makes me feel better and keeps me satiated longer, so I'd really like to stick with it, but most of the literature I've seen about balancing blood sugar recommends eating small portions more frequently, so I was curious what your thoughts were on this, or if you had any information I wasn't able to find. Thanks :)
I eat two big meals and sometimes a snack! Almost always a small dessert. It's actually usually better for blood sugar to have fewer big meals rather than a bunch of small ones because you spike your blood sugar less frequently. That is why intermittent fasting is supposed to be so good for blood sugar
Hey Marissa! I have a question! What if cruciferous veggies such as cauliflower and broccoli make you extremely bloated? Also Brussels sprouts and cabbage do the same thing? Would you recommend eating anything else? I’m eating way too much zucchini/ squash 😂
Hi :) I unfortunately can’t order Ned products because they don’t deliver to Canada. Is there anything similar I could get as a magnesium supplement to aid my sleep and overall health? Thanks girl 🙌🏻
I wish i found this video when it came out. Ive had my period for 3 months straight and drs say my hormones are good...but i changed my diet and the bleeding stopped and now i have a period 2 X a month which is better than before. I started going to a naturalist dr and she also recommended eating liver
I'm trying to balance my hormones as I have pcos but still haven't managed that. I think I have tried every diet too which I think it doesn't help either 🤔
Really useful information. As a non-binary folk who menstruates and has to do HRT to avoid being sick this made so much sense! I'm one of those high estrogen, low progesterone folks. Also low T and T-3/T-4. I have to do bio identical hormone therapy to keep from crashing and being ill. So now I know why certain times of the month I can eat sweet potato (just for example) and other times I feel almost like I have the flu after eating it. I'm definitely going to investigate this connection between diet and cycle more thoroughly. I feel like this approach might connect some dots for me. If you know any trans inclusive books (and other resources) on the topic I would greatly appreciate some recommendations! Thank you for 'aha' moment.
Women with a uterus ok. So put all that aside, a deal with the fact that you were born a female with a uterus and changing that by choice won’t stop your symptoms of being a woman
I was recommended evening primrose oil to balance my hormones. What do you think about this? Also thank you for this video. Really helpful information for someone with PCOS.
What about a prometabolic way of eating? Raw dairy, grass fed meat, root vegetables, maple syrup honey fruit. Balancing each meal with carbs protein fat
Sure, if that works for you! There’s this beautiful thing called bioindividuality that tells us that what works great for one person might be bad for another. You just need to find what works for you ☺️
I follow a keto diet where these foods are a go to for sides but I also have IBS. Cabbage effects me the most then cauliflower and then broccoli. I find if I eat videos hem day after day the effect is aculmative so I try to eat them spaced out between other vegetables.
I had an IUD put in because I was bleeding heavy 17 days out of the month plus an uneven thickening of the lining and 2 fibroids. I feel that the IUD is just masking the problem and I've stopped menstruating all together. I feel that there is a hormonal imbalance that is not being addressed. Is my suspicion correct?
What are your thoughts on how much red meat people should eat per week in terms of carcinogen concerns? Also I noticed that you eat bacon. Are you concerned about the carcinogen risks from that? Sorry-not sure if you have a video on it already!
Do you take any of the other supplements in your cabinet? I know you probably picked those 3 because they are probably the most widely usable but I'd love to hear if and when you use the other stuff. I saw you have dim, probiotic etc. I suffer moderate to severe hormonal acne that i went on acctuane in 2017 and cured my acne for about a year. Then it came back, I went off birth control to try and get everything balanced, and tried to heal it with Dr. Brightens balance kit and other supplements but nothing worked.

Thank you for the real and the science💖✨
oooo girl how'd you know I needed this video??
I got a lot of requests! Hope this helps you
I finally caved and am trying out some Ned products! Do you have a video on thyroid health? If not, I'd love to see a video on that!
Amazing!! You're gonna love it!! And no, I do not. What specifically would you like me to discuss about thyroid health?
@@MissFitAndNerdy maybe just some general things to do to help keep the thyroid balanced! Or anything at all really. I think I have to get mine checked and I’d just love to know some ways to keep it healthy in case I do have an issue!
@@MissFitAndNerdy yes! Please do a thyroid video. I had to have my thyroid ablated due to Graves Disease and now I’m taking hormone replacements to manage my hypothyroidism. I’d love to hear about a balancing diet that supports thyroid health for both hypo and hyperthyroidism.
Can you do an entire video on coffee? I would really appreciate it! I'm also interested in its connection to acne.
I have endometriosis (hormonal disease) and I've just stopped taking the pill (pill => no period => no lesions and no pain due to endomtriosis => my body could rest for a bit). So... my hormone profile is kinda fu**ed up right now ^^" I've notiecd that my body and my cycle are slowly but surely coming back to what they were before taking the pill but when I'll be back to a natural state I'll do my best to support my body and ease endometriosis symptoms (or get rid of it if I can!)
I truly appreciate how detailed you explain everything with scientific research to support it! Hormones is such a complex topic to cover! Thanks for the knowledge girl! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
I would love to see more about this topic. I just found you and I'm subscribed now. Love it!
Do you need different amounts of carbs/fats based on the cycle?
fase 1 (period week): iron rich foods, vitamin C (helps asorb the iron), watery foods, less caffeine.
fase 2: healthy fats, vitamin C and carbs
fase 3 (ovulation): eat estrogyn supporting foods and anti-inflammatory, watch your bloodsugar (more cravings).
fase 4: protein and healthy fats. less carbs, watch your bloodsugar, you need a bit more calories in a day to prepare for your period.
there are also specific foods you can eat and specific minerals you need more of, nicole.bendayan talks about that on tiktok, and the book fix your period talks about it a lot too. you can get more in depth knowleage there.
I like tea and I like to add a peppermint teabag to hot chocolate which seems like something you would like too
I have come across your videos here and there and not sure why I’m not subscribed but hey I am now. I love your videos of how you get to the main points and that working out isn’t always about losing weight and gaining muscle but that it’s overall health is really important.
Ps do you have a video that explains your diet???
Welcome to my channel!! :) And what do you mean by explain my diet? What would you like to know about it? I'm happy to discuss it!!
I continued on in the video and you actually answered the questions I had about what you eat thanx
Love this so much, do you have any vegetarian options xx
I have a hormone imbalance so this video was super helpful!!
Hope these tips help you fix it! I definitely recommend reading all the books I linked in the description for more help :)
Great video! I learned a lot. Thank you I’m going to implement a lot of this!
You deserve way more subs ! I love your channel x
Who knows!
i was called out by the caffeine, sitting here sipping my 3rd cup of coffee watching this video 😪
Thank you so much for doing this video. If you do any meal prep or cooking soon I’d love to watch any of it. I live for your what I eat in a day videos too.
I don't meal prep because I feel too restricted when I have pre-set meals. But I post what I eat in a day videos almost every week!
*Comparison between CBD and THC for sleep? How about weight loss?*
They're very different and affect the body in different ways. It would depend on what your body in particular needs the most
I actually had a very unstable period for 2 years before losing it completely for 10 months!
Such good info as always! I love that you always provide so many resources through all the books you link and the studies you discuss! I’ve read beyond the pill, but I just added the rest of the books to my tbr list too. I also want to try the balance blend from NED soon! The products I have tried from them have been so amazing. 🙌
Highly, highly recommend the other books if you found beyond the pill helpful!! They're all soooo good!
Hi! Thank you for this video: so full of interesting and useful information! Maybe you have already said it in previous videos, but I just wanted to ask if you do intermittent fasting :) thanks
Do you think hemp hearts would give a similar benefits as the neds oil? I live in Australia and don't think cbd is readily available. They only made hemp hearts legal for human ingestion a few years ago.
I have to be dealing hormone imbalances, PMS, horrible acne after my period returned due to amenorrhea caused by overtraining.
Every time I go to get my blood work done all of my hormone levels are "normal" any thoughts?
Thank you so much for this video! and I would love for you to go more in depth on this very vast subject.
I’m having the exact same issue!
@@ashlynnsmith146 I feel for you! hoping you can also figure out something soon!
@@MichalaOliver Thank you, I hope the same for you! Maybe if we can all team together and get enough likes on your comments Marissa can answer it in a video!
@@ashlynnsmith146 You're welcome and thank you! Yes I really do hope so. I just recently found her channel. There is so many things she has talked about that I have struggled with. I love her content and ways of thinking. Its not everyday you run across someone that does this much research on how to holistically heal themselves. I admire her passion.
Literally, same... I lost about 42 pounds. The first 30 were really easy! Then, my period started having issues, I started experiencing PMS and now it’s like I’m exercising just to lose 1/80th of a pound every two weeks when I put in 1-2 hours in the gym every day. It’s rough!
For Post menopausal women: any recommendations for a hormone balancing diet or is it the same?
PCOS represent 😂 I've been taking magnesium (it's harder to absorb with PCOS), vitamin D (also harder to absorb) and inositol, because my body doesn't produce as much as I need, and it's helping with insulin resistance!
PS: Came for the hormone balancing, stayed for the arugula ASMR and the liver memes
I also have PCOS. I had no idea about magnesium, vitamin D, and inositol. Thanks for this comment 😂
@@nataliesantamaria7439 My cycle used to be around 40 days and it’s now 28, so something is working, I just don’t know what 🤷🏻♀️😂

Welcome to my channel!! So glad you’re finding value in my content 🥰🙌🏻💗 Hope it helps!!
Do you have any knowledge on repairing leaky gut? Thank you ❤️ your channel!
Where do you get your ground beef w liver? I've never seen that before - very intrigued!
I get mine from the farmers market :)
I’ve made a few videos about sugar already :)
@@MissFitAndNerdy well now I have to watch those 😍
Wow! thank you for the info, I had no idea about the alcohol! I have sever PMS and I drink a glass of wine almost every day!
I literally had a mental breakdown when you said mental breakdowns aren't normal
Can men take these supplements, too? Please reply. I love your videos!
What you suggest to be the most cost effective way to make sure your hormones are regulated??
Start with cutting out things that disrupt hormone balance: alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, sugar, inflammatory fats/foods, etc. This will save you money. Then add the free things: regular movement, sleeping enough, meditation/other stress relievers.
this was soooo informative thank you thank you thank you, you seem pretty well informed!
How does exercise/ types of exercise affect your hormones? Love you and your videos ❤️
I heard some great food options however it would be very helpful if you list some of the foods. You mention this meat that you get w/ 20% liver in it. Do you make it yourself, do you get it from somewhere? Just one of many examples from the video. The tortilla shells, the kombucha... would love more details please!!!
Is there a good time of day to consume supplements? Thank you 🙂
Don't mind me, just wanted to make one correction:
I'm a dietetics student who just wrote a paper on the misconception that cholesterol doesn't affect blood serum cholesterol (it absolutely does) and explored the common ways studies will purposefully skew the results to favour corporate interest (these studies are almost always funded by meat, dairy, and egg industries).
This video is so good thank you for this
where did you get the chicken patties from looks so good
I want to get the NED hormone blend, but I am nursing and avoiding CBD. Is there an alternative?
Wonderful info. Thank you!
I know you explained a lot but what would be a good thing to start with as a beginner
Young mom, with toddler, but I’m stay at home and I need a boost to keep up with little one and pre workout for a heavy workout.... now I need to rethink all this
I’d love to see a video about alcohol and hormones!
Omg ive never been this early!!! 💖💖💖
Yess same
Thank you so much for being so early!! I appreciate you!!
@@MissFitAndNerdy Thanks so much :)
What specific type of magnesium would you say is best absorbed/utilized in the body, especially in regulating hormones?
I love your videos!!! ❤️ You really do your research

Could you list what you put in those breakfast "egg tacos". My mouth started to water just looking at them. :)
In eating more kimchi right now its the nicest fermented food lol. Its really good in miso egg drop soup!
When I eat keto, my PMS symptoms are reduced greatly!

Do you have any recommendations for vegan cholesterol sources?
What about a prometabolic way of eating? Raw dairy, grass fed meat, root vegetables, maple syrup honey fruit. Balancing each meal with carbs protein fat

What would you recommend if you don’t eat meat ?
What are your thoughts on how much red meat people should eat per week in terms of carcinogen concerns? Also I noticed that you eat bacon. Are you concerned about the carcinogen risks from that? Sorry-not sure if you have a video on it already!

Do you take any of the other supplements in your cabinet? I know you probably picked those 3 because they are probably the most widely usable but I'd love to hear if and when you use the other stuff. I saw you have dim, probiotic etc. I suffer moderate to severe hormonal acne that i went on acctuane in 2017 and cured my acne for about a year.
