    There is so much art in the b-sides of Band Maid!. At this point they could release a very reputable EP with just these songs. Summer Drive, Matchless Gum, Unfair Game, Play, Screaming, Smile, Hide & Seek, Hibana and Corallium.

  • @UltraHD.7
    @UltraHD.7 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    Now you have arrived at their totally awesome "B-side" gems, often better than the A-side.
    So you can absolutely not miss on "Unfair game", the mother of them and, imo, one of their best songs ever.
    Or "Hibana", which was indeed the theme song of a japanese college ego shooter league.
    Fun fact: Miku is known to be, or at least have been, an enthusiastic PUBG player 😊

    • @VladimirChupin
      @VladimirChupin 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      SJ Nix thoroughly misinformed NittPicc during the interview when he energetically denied that Hibana is connected to a game.
      From Usen - Encore interview with Miku and Saiki:
      -- As for the other tracks on the single, [Hibana] is the battle theme song for the "All Japan University e-Sports Competition". This is also a newly-written song, right?
      Miku: That’s right-po.
      -- Right. With the lyrics, you are using the gun to…
      Miku: Shoot at everyone-po. *laughter*
      -- It would have been a little frightening if these weren’t just lyrics *laughter*
      Miku: I wonder what I was thinking about when I wrote it… Perhaps I was under a lot of stress… or? *laughter*
      SAIKI: If it is Kobato, then it still makes sense because she plays PUBG.
      Miku: That’s right-po! I usually like this sort of game (note: shooter games). In that sense, I guess it does seem reflective of myself-po. It seems it has revealed a little bit about my own interests. *laughter*
      -- Were there any specific requests with regards to this song?
      Miku: Not really … *laughter* I think I was really blessed-po. I was just told to do whatever I wanted.
      SAIKI: Rather, I was the one who gave orders to Kobato. Like “please include these things in the lyrics” or something like that.
      Miku: So this game is called [Rainbow Six Siege], and Saiki has a friend who plays the game-po.
      SAIKI: My friend is a gamer so I thought to ask him whether he knew about [Rainbow Six Siege], and the moment I did he was like “You’re going to ask me about this!?” (note: excited)
      Miku: A switch was turned on-po. *laughter*
      SAIKI: Yup. “So, let me tell you about this game…” and my friend started giving a lecture on various aspects of the game *laughter* So for different games, there are specific unique terms that are used in each game, right? I was taught some of these specialised terms and passed the info on to Kobato. For example, it seems “One Shot One Kill” would make people happy, etc.
      **Miku: “**I’ll add that in-po!”
      SAIKI: Also, I was told that setting traps is an important part of this game. There’s a trap where if you knock on the wall 3 times, a bomb will explode, so Kobato wrote “Knock Knock Knock” into the lyrics. I also asked Kobato to make some changes to give off the feeling of “Let’s set more traps!”, etc. Like this, while listening to my friend’s lecture, and actually watching the game on screen, it’s like “ah… I see how it is”.
      Miku: So because there is a lot of specific jargon, so I thought that was very important when writing the lyrics-po.

    Kanami is VERY fond of sneaky polyrhythms, layering either vocal or instrumental polyrhythms over 4/4. 3-3-2 over 4/4 happens a lot, ie in Sayonakidori or Puzzle. Hide and Seek is in my top 20. I wish Kanami would revisit this song sometimes and remember that space can be as effective as notes lol.

    Welcome Home Princess NittPicc! I hope you are having a wonderful Band Maid Sunday! Miku is into gaming, although I don't think she has much time lately to do any gaming. She is the main spokespigeon for the band, writes most of the lyrics and has to perform double duties as rhythm guitarist and vocalist, and she has a lot of other interests that keep her busy in her downtime. You will learn more about that in Ohrenje's documentary on her. He split Miku's documentary into three parts, because she is quite the character. Please take care and have an amazing week.

    Punk tends to be more about the message, not the musicality. With hard rock and metal, it’s typically the other way around. I feel BM often draws on both pop punk and punk to make their musicality more accessible.

  • @Kevin6059
    @Kevin6059 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    Reference to punk rock not stupid at all, NP. Musically I found it interesting that it seemed to take much longer than normal to get from the verse to the chorus. It didn't sound like a "pre-chorus" either, but more like an extended verse with three separate sounding iterations. Then the chorus hits and it's catchy as f'ing hell and I love it. Also love Mincho's solo (gee what a surprise), since it has a little bit of everything and at the end a very cool chromatic and unexpected twist! And I'm older than you, so where you heard Santana and Eddie Van Halen, I heard Ritchie Blackmore!!

    You're not crazy. Anyone who thinks the lyrics are actually "out of synch" doesn't have a functioning sense of rhythm. All the parts are syncopated. It definitely has a punk feel but it's far more sophisticated and layered. The drop-out at the second chorus and Saiki's snarling vocals in that chorus are great. The last phrase of Kanami's solo is nuts, btw. The song is a hidden gem, better with each play.

    The first time I heard this song was from a very rare Japanese fancam on YT 2019 (Rare cos it's not allowed in Japan to record at a gig) sound wise it was ok but the way Saiki sang the second chorus/verse in one breath just wowed me. Then I saw it for myself in Islington 2019 at a 1 man show my first BAND-MAID gig where she nailed it perfectly! and even better I got to meet Saiki at the VIP where we chatted, well she chatted I just gawped, lost like a deer in the headlights and she has sharp nails, that I can attest to as she poked me in the back😊

    Signs of a great band, when your B-sides are as good as some band's career defining hits. Any of Band Maid's B-sides are better than "Free Bird", any steve miller band song, Boston, or 95% of the bands in the R'nR Hall of Fame. To have so many great songs in 10 years, compared to some artists with 40 years and 20 albums who could barely make 1 good "Best of." album. These gals are prolific, IMO... there are songs by Zeppelin, Beatles, Metallica, RUSH, and Van Halen that I skip, but not Band Maid.... I love them all, even "Start Over". May I suggest you react/review their song "Youth", it's a rare bird with not many reactions. It's a bonus track that comes with the "Unseen World" limited edition. The regular edition of this CD costs $19, limited edition is at $80. You do get a Bluray with 4 "White Room" videos. So, it's possibly their most expensive song since you can't buy it on Spotify or Apple Music, just this limited edition. I have it because SJ had an extra copy, he sold to me for a great price. There is a live YT video from "The Day of Maid 2021" okyu-ji or I've seen a PinD photo collage version. Great song that most don't know about. 🤘

    Some of their songs the music perfectly mathches the meaning of the lyric and I think it's one of them. Rhythmically, they deliberately trick you by one of the instruments including vocals coming in slighly off. They are also the masters of using pause effectively. in this song is "oh, no one can stop me" part. Love it.
    Off topic, if you enjoy hardcore punk-rock with multiple elements you'd love Bad Brains (1976-), but if you pick a wrong live video, you'd never want to listen to them again lol.
    They play punk with metal, rap, reggae, funk, math, progressive elements depending on the album you pick. Every album has a couple of reggae songs as well.
    I love Band-Maid for the similar reason.

    And Many of us consider this to be Pop-Punk.

      What is Japanese? Culture is dependent on so many factors. All types of Western music is insanely popular in Japan. Blues, jazz, classical, classic rock. I live in Hawaii and know that Hawaiian music and dance has it's share of fans and practitioners in Japan. Kanami herself has cited the Western guitarists she admires. Especially Van Halen for the skill of tapping.

      Yeah... I would say, Sex Pistols is more "on steroids" than Hide-and-Seek. BAND-MAID is a very refined music anyway, even when they want to go brutal.
