That's one thing that I'm glad I did over the years was teaching the kids just about everything I know. They're adults now and usually do a good job coming up with solutions for problems and are a bit of a rock star among their friends for their abilities and knowledge.

Way to go DAD teaching your kids so many things and especially logic. Most parents these days don't do that and I was lucky my dad taught me a lot of things about camping, fishing, chores and my other SEVEN siblings rarely participated. I still have fishing skills too that dad taught me and my husband said give me your pole and I will put the worm on it...I said NO I do my own thank you LOLOL His jaw dropped. DAD'S ARE GREAT TEACHERS for sure. God Bless you.

Starting a homestead and building your dream home seems like such an ominous task especially when u start with nothing but a dream. But you’ve shown us that anything is possible with hard work and a loving family. Each of you have made sacrifices to have your life now but the rewards outweigh the sacrifices by far. Thank you so very much for including us in this process and for allowing me the joy of knowing and loving your family dearly. Each of you are very dear to my heart and always in my prayers 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

Everyone has a "TO DO" list. Great that you are getting some things marked off. Your home is so pretty and you have done a great job.. The kids were so much smaller when you started, but now that they are getting bigger, it is a great time to start teaching them some skills. Those will come in handy when you start the garage and apartment build. I bet they will be very happy to get in and help. Everything you learn as a kid comes in handy in the future. My father insisted we learn how do do things and 70 years later I still rely on a lot of those skills. Stay warm!!! Spring will be here before you know along with yet another list and the mud!!! God bless all of you. Looking forward to your next video.. The bread is so good. I made it when you posted it before,, now need to make it again.

You guys should have no regrets when it comes to your family..you have done an amazing job of accomplishing this huge feat while prioritizing family time when at all feasible. I am sure that was not lost on your kids. As they get older and are able to participate more they can - you have so many more projects planned there will be opportunities that are commensurate with their age, ability and interests. They were there and witnessed the journey - sometimes they participated, but they were always aware. The loving spirit and the humor were constants, through pressure filled moments and the unavoidable stress that is intrinsic to such a huge undertaking ... lessons learned from witnessing this interaction are priceless. Pat yourselves on the back.

The best thing my elders taught me was *how* to learn. Working with them to grow, preserve, and prepare food including cooking on a wood stove. Building, repair, remaking things was the norm, and I rebuilt a car engine in my teens. During college I designed and made two off grid homes.
My elders taught me how to evaluate sources and how to find mentors. Learned fiber arts, such that I can make clothing from fiber from enthusiasts. Learned languages, by finding teachers and native speakers in the community. Learned biology and permaculture from a formal education setting, skills I now teach to others.
The best part is I passed these skills on to my children using home based education which was illegal when I was school aged. From how I was taught, I learned how to set up adult tasks to work with me by setting the kids up for success in the tasks. That said, it takes time to do the task *and* teach it at the same time.

You can only do so much when you are teaching kids the "building trade". They were not ready for bigger stuff and the risk of injury (and government intervention for child endangerment) was greater. You followed your instincts and your family's abilities (or lack of them) to get the main project done, which was to get a house built. Now, some projects can be done but look at the pumphouse - the weather and some of the building completion aspects still are beyond the capabilities to involve the kids. But consider teaching them how to use smaller tools and involve them in indoor projects. Baking, cooking, canning, and preserving are always skills that should be taught. Don't forget to include them in feeding your livestock. You are doing that so - don't second guess what you "failed" to do, instead plan on how to safely include them in your next project.

I absolutely LOVE that you include your kids in these projects sometimes... that you teach them with love and patience. Growing up, I tried so hard to help my Dad... but mostly I was on clean-up duty. I didn't graduate to actually driving a nail for years... and I gotta tell you, there was a resentment that built up inside from being infantalized for so long. My heart is warmed to know that there are better ways.

As a beekeeper, I’ll let you in on something. ALL HONEY IS ORGANIC. Only bees can make honey, which makes all honey organic. There’s no such thing as synthetic honey. If it says it’s honey, it’s honey. If it says it’s honey sauce (like KFC) then they have added sugars or molasses, etc to dilute it. DON’T OVERPAY FOR HONEY JUST BECAUSE IT SAYS IT’S ORGANIC. 5:20

By example you are teaching your kids to make good choices and showing them what is possible with the correct life partner equally yoked. The immense love you have for each other built the house and family. Definitely involve your kids, the house is 99%, life is slowing down a little teach them everything you have needed to get this far in your life. Yumm. I love homemade bread. It is something I make every week. I used to make it every friday. Lol I swear my brothers smelled it coming from the oven. They would drive 5 miles over to the house just as I was taking the first loaves out of the oven. One loaf would instantly be slathered with butter and devoured. I always make at least 14 loaves because they would take some home for the week and some went to Mom and Dad. The rest for our use. Now I only make 2 loaves for the week. My husband recently passed, my Dad has passed and one brother too. I now live 5 states away from Mom and one brother. My daughter makes bread for her family now too. I love the memories of all of us around a fresh loaf of bread and watching the ecstasy on their faces as they munch away. I saw that same look on the kids faces as they bit into the loaf. Making great memories.

A good idea to involve your children, they will point to that in the future and say I help to do that. Still finding job to do in your home.
Stay warm and safe, it will soon be springtime. Love from Mike. ❤

I've bought every shower head off Ebay. Numerous older models are solid bronze,. Then I drill the openings larger and boost the water pressure to 80 psi. I can hardly stand underneath it. But I'm squeaky clean........

The worst weather to try and do anything in is anything that's windy! Trying to build and just enjoy the process when there are gusty winds is so painful. Good for you guys for waiting until it died down a bit!

Yum! The bread looks really good. I need to get back to making bread. When the children were young I made all our bread and butter. We got fresh milk from a dairy farmer in the area. The farmers are no longer with us, so we can't do that anymore; but the bread - I can still do! Love you all!

Here is a suggestion to help you out when canning. After you empty a jar. Wash the jar and seal and flip the seal over and place it on the jar and hold it on with the ring. Your jars will be clean and already to use. All you have to do is heat the jar and fill. I do this all the time. It saves me hours in my canning.
I have a strawberry jam recipe that is so simple that you want want to use any other.
" Four cups of mashed berries to five cups sugar and two tablespoon lemon juice. Cook until thick and hen deform. Jar up and seal. Cool upside down completely them place in your freezer. This will keep for years. The jam will be ruby red and delicious. Hope you enjoy.

I wish my husband and I did this when we were remodeling our home. The kids are grown and don't seem too interested in doing these things. It's good though that your children are still at the age where they can help and learn. You are great parents. God bless your family!

Teaching your children these skills will last them a life time. You never when your going to need them. Sad that most kids have know idea how to do anything. Parents just don't take the time anymore or most never got taught themselves. Glad to see that you take the time to involve your kids in all aspects of life.

"Watch out Smuckers"! Melissa really made me laugh with that one! When I saw the cold weather you were working in, I thought to myself "this would be a good day to bake cookies". But being the warriors that you are, you still got stuff done. Kudos to my favorite TH-cam family!

    A great video.
A spring rod would keep you from having to drill for shower rod.
A tip from my great aunt, when you cut homemade bread lay the loaf on its side and it doesn't break apart as you cut. It really works. I use that technic everyday.
Great that the kids helped, now you have your garage and apartment above for them to help with. It's so helpful to learn these things to have for help when your older.
    Have a great weekend.

Love watching your videos! I'm always watching DIY & building shows. Used to watch them with my husband, but lost him to a surprise heart attack last April. So, I'm living in a 5th wheel on 10 acres without my love to help build the little house we dreamed of. Hard to get started with the site prep on my own, trying to keep faith that God's timing is perfect.
So blessed you are to have each other! I'm too old now (early 60s) to find a love & partnership like yours. You are living a wonderfully blessed life. 💖
    - learning so much from you, just 94 miles SE of you in Chattaroy, WA. 💜

Mmmmm home made bread.☺☺☺☺☺☺I will have to try yours out some time. I am glad that you are still working on some projects. Just think, one day the house will be done but there will always be something to do. Even though the kids were not able to help you during the build, they saw you working and they see the results. They will never forget the example that you left. My Mom was not as handy as you are but she did make my Dad work and work. Maybe that is why he died first. It is always good to see you and the projects. I am sure you have inspired many people. 😃😃😃😃
