hahaha Simon :-D yes the great names from the 70's, I remember reading in the old cactus books about using cigarette ends and soaking them in water to use the water to dab on pests as the nicotine kills the pests, I still have some of the Bordeaux powder I bought from a garden shop in Waterford, its a shame its been banned now, thanks so much Simon for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Hans and me from Belfast to Dublin for a fantastic evening XXXX

Most of the orange marks on mine came from spidermites, rust and age. But rats have been relentless!! Our rat patrol has taken out 4 rats already!! Big O got the last one!! Only to be replaced by another in my greenhouse!! Chewed off a couple large patches of bark off my fig trees!! Im hoping the rat patrol ( our outdoor cats) will get him soon!!! Bad thing about rats, when they leave an orange mark , its a big hole. Thanks for sharing Lyn!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, to across the emerald isle, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌴🌷🍀💐🪴🌹🌿🌳🌱🌻🌾😃👍

Good information shared! Thanks for putting this together. (I watched it during Monday morning coffee at the office.) I see that you have many mature cacti. Would you consider a video that showcases the mature against what they looked like when they were pups? What inspires me with cactus is the anticipation/nurturing of changes over the extended length of time. What would their bloom look like, if they ever bloom. How different will the cactus be in 10 or 20 years if I am fortunate enough to be there down the road.
So happy you loved the info :-D thats a fantastic idea for a future video, but I don't have enough photos and footage to show comparisons from when they were pups to how they are in maturity, but it would be good to do if its possible, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Thanks Lyn! I have orange growths sticking out of my Motocactus Columbiana but they're flower buds!!! I had 2 different tricolor jades from different growers. Both succumbed to rust. I isolated them and treated them but lost them both. No other plant around them was affected. Weird! When disposing of a plant with rust don't compost it. It must be discarded in a sealed bag so the spores don't spread.

Hi, Lyn. Do you ever use a systemic on your collection? If yes, I was wondering what you use. I use a granular systemic, but my cactus soil is so gritty that it doesn't dissolve.
Hi Janis :-D yes I sometimes have to use a Systemic, I use Provado Vine weevil killer, I find that most of the systemics are not as good as they used to be now, I always prefer to use Neem oil and rubbing alcohol but I do have to sometimes use Systemics especially for root mealy bugs, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
How do you treat vine weevil in cacti during the winter? I have just discovered I have lost a cactus that has been eaten from the inside out and found a vine weevil in the soil. But how do you treat it when you can't water it?
Hi Tracy, so sorry to hear about your cactus, vine weevils are such pests and their larvae are awful at eating the roots too, in the past I have had this happen with some of my cacti n winter too, I have to remove as much of the soil from the roots as possible and soak the root ball in rubbing alcohol /isopropyl alcohol, you can also use vodka instead, I let the roots soak for about 15 mins and any vine weevils and their grubs will die and float up to the surface, I then let the roots dry out, the rootball usually dries quite fast within an hour or two as the alcohol dries much faster than water, I then leave the cactus bare rooted in a shady but light position until spring, in the spring I would pot up again and then wait a week for the roots to settle and then water with vine weevil killer by Provado, I hope this helps, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
Hi Lyn! Do you have any idea what would cause the roots and underside of a cacti to go pink? I bought a cactus from a nursery last week and it barely had any roots and half the bottom was pink. I have no clue what it could be and I’m not sure what to do to save it. Currently having it sit on top of some dry pumice and crushed clay pebbles from a video you made about dealing with cacti with no roots, but lmk if you have any other suggestions. Wishing you plant power from Los Angeles! 🫶🏾
Hi ther, oh no so sorry to hear about your cactus, the pink bottom part is a stress response that cacti develop when they are under stress, this would have been caused from the roots getting stressed possibly due to either root damage caused by root rot, or if the roots have been kept too dry and they have broken away, root mealy bugs can often be a pest to roots too, if the cactus was overwatered or planted in the wrong type of soil this can cause this too, but you have done the right thing to have your cactus on the pumice and clay pebbles to get it to regrow roots again, I will keep my fingers crossed that your cactus recovers well and regrows new roots, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Los Angeles for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX
Very informative thnx! What is an acceptable temperature in the winter for cacti and succulents? I do tend to keep my house quite cool to save on heating costs but I also want to keep my new mini cacti and succulents alive 🙂
Hi there :-D the minimum winter temperature for the majority of cacti and succulents would be 5c /41F if they are kept totally dry over the winter with no watering, but ideally they prefer a minimum of 7-8c, there are some cacti and succulents such as Euphorbias and Melocacti that need a minimum winter temperature of 10c /50F and if you have a mixed collection I would recommend a temperature of a minimum of 10c /50F to be on the safe side, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

rust infects during cold wet humid then it will show on a sunny day some plants show faster than cactus like my peppers got hit by rust this year(only took one cold rainy day) due to the rain and cool summer we had in new england at first i thought it was mosaic virus but temp has allot to due with fungus infection. this is why cool blooded pets are highly susceptible to fungal infections vs a kitty or pup that is quite warm. but like new england your live in ireland and have a particular climate not quite for cactus. be well good luck and power on.
