I’ve noticed a lot of other TH-camrs producing lists of westerns. However, in my opinion your videos are the best narrated, edited & interesting! This video was especially good!
Wrangler: Excellent selections today:,I am a big fan of Wellman, happy you included him. Did you know, Frank Capra actually wrote Westward The Women? However, he knew he would be the WRONG person to direct. His choice: Wellman. The fact that Capra who is on anyone’s short list of greatest directors of all time, trusted Wellman with his story speaks volumes to Wellman’s greatness.
To me, the top three american western directors of that period are all associated with a favorite actor (muse) with whom they made all their classic films. John Ford with John Wayne, of course. Anthony Mann with Jimmy Stewart. Budd Boetticher with Randolph Scott.
Fine list. The only one I think you missed was John Huston (Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1948 and The Unforgiven 1961). Huston and most of the others on your list made great films other genres.
Read a interesting plot in the western lexicon, german by Joe Hembus, quote, Sam Peckinpah was the bastard son of John Ford. His cousin was Sergio Leone. Nice list you brought, thanks Ludwig.
The big 5 are Ford, Hawks, Mann, Boetticher and Fuller. THen you have some excellent ones by Ray, Lang, and Peckinpah I'm not the biggest fan of High Noon and Shane but I guess I'm in the minority.
We are blessed to have had so many great directors in this genre. And the fact that there's room for such diversity of style!

Love 'em both!

I would throw in a wild card from that classic era With Delmer Daves and Glenn Ford actor muse partnership with jubal cowboy and 3-10 to Yuma.
You left out Hawks!! And maybe Fuller.
