Man being a dad is the most amazing thing in the world! My baby was born back in March of this year and seeing your baby on the videos is just great man!
Hi Jasper, nearly fell of my seat laughing when you went past the Palm Mar sign. We have stayed there at our friends apartment numerous times and whoever sees the Palm Mar sign first get an ice cream, so I owe you an ice cream if I ever see you. Thanks for the reportage.
At that altitude, what happens is that it becomes sliiiightly more difficult to say "What'ssss up cycling faaaaanaaaatics?!", but it's still worth saying you know!!! ;)
Here in SoCal there are a few classic climbs. Glendora Mountain Ridge (gate to shack) is a about 13 k with an average gradient over 5%. Continuing on to Mt. Baldy is Glendora Ridge Road, 34k and average gradient over 3% Do them both and it's 50 K starting at 300 M and ending at 1,300 M.
Great post Jasper! Have you considered an altitude tent? I have an intermittent hypoxic training device but stopped using it because I just felt worn out from it all the time.
Your tempo wattage is exactly my threshold (although am lighter). I seem to be able to keep in my tempo zone for about 90mins but by 2hrs struggle and usually slip below by about 10W's or so on average due to fatigue.
I found the altitude mega tough. It killed me after I got to the caldera, both a headwind and the drag up to the highest point. I did the descent the other way, which gives you almost the whole thing with just one minor corner. Must admit, I never want to see it again ..... only after the cafe does it get nice. Although the next two times I used different routes which were quieter from the coast road up to the last cafe.
Nice video Jasper. For those stuck with short 100m climbs, would you recommend going at a harder pace on the downhill so the recovery isn't too complete while doing repeats to duplicate the effect of a long hill?
thats great video, do you eat anything while climbing this long? what do you eat? Im training to ride long climbs also but I'm struggling to put out wattage after i think 1.5 - 2 hours of non stop climbing, do you have any tips and whats your fueling strategy on long training climbs? thanks :)
1) Are you okay with the standard iPhone earphones? I cannot ride with them, cause they take up much wind noice and I don't want to turn up the volume quiet high. Same experience? Or does it depend also on the helmet? 2) Intermittend Fasting: Do you do most rides in if-state? Even high-intense workouts? I know your 2pm eating time, as you mentioned in your Girona video. I'm curious about energy levels. Your glycogen-depot should be depleted after 3-4 hours at intermediate intensity. Just interested, thanks for replying ;-)
@@jasperverkuijl Thanks, my perspective changed as I read Friels Book for Training. So most of the time in z2 and controlled and well planned higher zones with a clear goal for each training. That matches your answer. Stay healthy and good ride for the rest of the season, Nils :)
Hi, I climbed the Alto de Letras in Colombia up to 3500 mts I started to feel the Height problems at 2800 mts. My Power droped basically from 190 to 160 (my ftp is 235)
How are aero bikes at climbing I can't decide between the canyon aero or ultimate. Both look good spec wise and are light but the aero just looks so much sexier but i don't race.
When you're riding, it doesn't matter how good your bike looks, it matters how good you feel on it. So buy a bike you're comfortable on while riding, that's going to make it easy to ride often and hard. Aero bikes tend to be better than anything else, as long as you can hold the aggressive position, but if you're not racing aero or no aero is all the same. Not to mention your body and body position is the biggest drag-producing-factor on the bike, not the bike itself. So if you want aero, get really low on the bike and tuck your head
Go aero! It'll have more benefit on climbs up to around 5/6% than a light bike and it will also deliver you either quicker or fresher to the climbs because if the aero gains on the flat. Saying that though, I like aero bikes because like you, I think they look better! lol
@@Yosser70 air resistance at 5/6% incline is only a 14% respectively 10% fraction of the resistance force the cyclist has to overcome, the rest up to 100% being almost exclusively gravity. And since the bike only produces a small fraction of the drag while riding, the cyclist being the more important drag-producing element, I really can't see how an amateur who doesn't race and probably won't be going fast on said climbs would ever benefit from an "aero" bike. This is just mumbo-jumbo marketing
@@pl4free Why would him not racing mean he isn't going to be quick? You totally missed the point about the advantage of aero on the flat before the climb. Over the course of a ride, unless there's a lot of very steep climbs an aero bike will be faster at the same power output.
Wow de Apple app van Wahoo is stukken beter dan die van Android... Lekker veel data en grafieken. Of heb je daar een speciaal premium wahoo account voor nodig?
Hey Jasper ! Where are your big arms ? May be one year before you still have pretty biceps . Physical mutation from sprinter To climber ? 😉 . Thanks for this good roadtrip. See ya 🤘
@@jasperverkuijl : so, is gym really necessary To perform as a sprinter ? Or strength exercices on the bike are still enough ? (So hard for me To appreciate power results by gym exercices... so boring as well) 😓😤

The sign literally says that the line is just an "orientation" in order for cars not to invade the other lane. Overtake is not forbidden but it's not recommended
Entertaining but did not push the right information buttons. Personally I live at 9’400 feet (not sure the meter equivalent). So, if I got this right I should not train above tempo or risk some catastrophic event? Specifically referencing your coaches need to have you go Vo2 max+ efforts you mention under 1,500 meters (whatever that altitude is). Not mean just learning. Hope to find my own solution beyond well... just recover more between repeats. ;)
I've spent 3 weeks in Tenerife climbing teide about 5x a week at zone2. When I came back my FTP was increased by 70watts. From 3.6w/Kg to 4.7w/Kg. It's really good training.

Damn Jasper you're a beast! The base altitude at my school is 2300m, and all my climbs pretty much start at that altitude.
Awesome Video Jasper. Sam is so Funny. What a cutie 😁
Thanks! This was interesting. Maybe someday I'll ride to mount Teide:)
@11:01 omggg that was way to close. Stupid of the car to take over at a blind corner
