- If you love cute and kawaii themed cafes in Tokyo and wanna know top cafes in Harajuku, look no further, I will probably have tried visiting. However this cafe appeared in Harajuku 2019 and then suddenly vanished after 2 months. Let's have a look inside this Harajuku Cafe when it still existed and find out what could have contributed to its disappearance.

Maybe it was one of those things where a landlord has space available for a short time before the next longer term tenant moves in and someone wanted to try the concept out to see if it worked if only for a couple of months?

It looked truly beautiful! But I can't imagine cleaning this place... after some time it must get dusty, and so many fake plants collect dust like crazy... I wouldn't want to clean this place! And cleanliness is one of the top requirements for a good café / restaurant.
It might have been too big for it's own good. Unless it was doing good business everyday, I can only imagine how much it would cost to maintain
Knowing Japan it should've been doing great. Places like this get filled even in the morning and people get in line just to get in. Even on weekdays because people try to take the best chance of getting in. Maybe it was there for a set amount of time which makes it more limited and more popular. Some places change the theme and name of cafes from time to time.
But in this case I think it was the size and maybe it was too expensive and young people couldn't afford to go? Like Cathy said, there wasn't a lot of people there.

I suspect it had a limited novelty value in a very expensive area. (Also where there may be 'cute' fashionable people concentrated, but getting them to buy *sweets* all the time might be a hard sell cause fashion people are pretty notorious for not indulging too much.) It might have popped up and was neat for two weeks then flared out, assuming the closing wasn't related to the virus or attending tourism issues. Also someone else suggested it might have been a short-term experiment never necessarily intended to be in for the long haul.
After 2 moths seam for me not the virus was the fault, even for new business could stone in way, this business have a long term plan. What you say, that was only short-term, I hear from Tokyo for many years, that this is in constant change.

For a moment I thought this shop had to close up because of 2020 and all that went on. But I see in your discretion it closed in 2019.

I know this is a little late but I'm guessing that this was a temporary setup between two major contract leases. I'm not familiar with Tokyo's contract agreements but two months is a very short time both to determine whether a business is profitable and to rent out a location in a busy city, where the building owner is going to want assurances that the space is being used (and paid for) for as much of the year as possible.
Given that its entire menu seemed to be capitalizing on strawberry season, it was probably always meant to be a temporary venture before the next permanent shop was ready to move in.
Looked like a really cool place. Too bad it closed. Probably cost to much too run/ not enough profit to keep open.
Omg no way I had no idea this place was only open for 2 months! I went last year for the high tea and it was such an awesome experience! I’m allergic to nuts and they switched out the macaroons in the tea set for chocolate covered strawberries and I really appreciated that!! When you eat there you get unlimited strawberries, coffee and tea. Totally worth the price in my opinion because in japan strawberries are so expensive!! Such a shame it closed the place was so cute too! I’m glad I got some good pictures when I went. RIP fruit picnic!!
I know there were places in the US that closed down for good cause of COVID-19. So, with a lot of places having to close just during the virus some just couldn't survive and had to go out of business.

Now I am craving for some ice cream! Interesting concept for that type of business. Shame it didn’t work out for them.

The cost of upkeep and over-head for real estate would have been insane. Bad business...
There's many places in Japan that do this, where they are only open for a set amount of time. They probably just rent, they own many places like this and change seasonally, or they move from place to place. In Japan the more limited it is, the more popular it becomes.
I’m surprised too because spaces like these are important in overcrowded spaces in Japan.

You act like I'm not gonna hit the like before even watching the video, I'm going to enjoy it as long as it has Cathy wearing a pretty dress no matter what!
Boah, ich weiß nicht wie ichs formulieren soll... Aber da haben sich zu viele Ideen gegenseitig behindert und man hat einige Ideen nicht durchdacht. Fangen wir mit der Lage an. War es leicht zu finden oder war es ein Insider? Jetzt zum Namen und die Aufmerksamkeit. Der Name "Fruit Picnic" als leuchtender vergoldeter Schriftzug (Gold damits nobel aussieht)? Das findet keine Aufmerksamkeit. Wieso keinen Picknickkorb mit Obst drin auf so einem Grasbüschel und den Namen dabei? Leute merken sich Symbole einfacher und wenns richtig gemacht worden wäre auch ein Eyecatcher. Da sind wir auch schon beim nächsten Punkt und zwar Identitätskrise. Wieso die Neonleuchten? Bis auf den Namen komplett am Thema vorbei. Das ist das richtige Stichwort was die Klientel angeht. Insta ist zwar schön aber wenn man sein Geschäftsmodell darauf aufbaut wirds schnell zappenduster, weils niche ist. Nicht jeder postet was auf Insta auch wenns ein Trend ist oder mehr Leute machen. Apropos Kunden, als Mann würde ich höchstens ein Date oder meine Freundin da hin bringen, weils halt süß ist aber sonst... Das heißt Männer werdens meiden, das ist wieder ein großer Teil an Geld was einem in der Kasse fehlen wird. Jetzt zur Ausstattung. Normal bis auf die Picknickarea obwohl die dann besonders rausstechen. Oh und jetzt zu den Picknickareas. 🙄Nette Idee aber liegt man gerne mit seiner besseren Hälfte auf Kunstrasen umgeben von Fremden? Also ich nicht. 😂 Und dann noch die Leute die Fotos machen absoluter Abturner. Zum Schluss gehen wir auf das Hauptmerkmal des Cafés ein, das Essen. Fruit Picnic ist der Name und man hat nur Erdbeere? Wo ist die Banane, Kiwi, Mango oder der Apfel? Man hätte so viel mehr anbieten können, z.B. im Sommer ein Meloneneis.. Der Shake mit der Sojamilch ist auch so eine Sache. Man hätte es als Alternative anbieten können dann hätte man sich entscheiden können, weil nicht jeder laktoseintolerant oder sogar vegan ist. Mir ist noch was aufgefallen, es soll an ein Picknick im Freien erinnern und man hört Musik? Ich hätte versucht Vogelgesang usw. zu spielen, weils an draußen erinnert und entspannt. Ist man entspannt und es fühlt sich angenehm an bleibt man länger und konsumiert vielleicht auch mehr. 🤔 So zieht sich die Liste in die länge und man kann noch ewig darüber diskutieren was falsch gelaufen ist. 😊Schade, dass es nicht geklappt hat aber vielleicht hätte es nicht sein sollen.

cute. very bad timing with the worldwide virus lockdowns and travel restrictions. Also the picnic seating seems expensive and you were so nice and sensitive not to sit there and melt your ice cream all over the fabric but otherwise the upkeep of this place seems like a nightmare

Maybe it just didn't have enough customers.
Maybe, if the menu was all strawberry, that was an issue. What if someone doesn't like strawberry or can't eat them? (One of my coworkers can't eat strawberries because they give her migraines :( ) Personally, I love strawberry, so it wouldn't be an issue, but just wondering if the lack of types of fruits could be a problem for some people.
If it vanished during Covid, maybe that was part of the reason it closed. A lot of restaurants in Canada are at risk of being closed because they could only do takeout for a few months and now there's limited customers and they're not making enough money to stay open. :( A lot of people just aren't taking the risk of eating out too. (I don't know how it is in Japan).
You know, come to think of it, it could be overspecialization, there, too. I mean, I kind of like strawberries, but mostly would choose other berries. Maybe there was just a real good strawberry season there and this only stayed around while supplies lasted. Good fruit's expensive there.
The menu looks super good. Such a shame that they closed. Do you know what is in there now?

Well, settings often depend on the people. In the end, most cafe decorations are mostly just a stage of sorts.

this is just my personal opinion.....Harajuku is getting uglier as the years go by.....first time I got there in 2017 it still looked great.....then last year I saw this huge construction just near Takeshita st......then just recently they demolished the iconic train station
I have three theories one its was ugly two you can go for picnic in the park not inside a building lol three japan's economy is going to hell.
