Glad you enjoyed the trip. Black Lake typically isn't open until after July 1st. Even if you had passed Smith Mtn, there are a couple north aspect slopes that would likely have been snowed shut. Hope you can try next year a bit later in the season.
Thanks, that is good to know. It seemed like it was down hill a bit after Smith Mtn but if there were more peaks, I am sure they were snowed in too. I appreciate the info for next year! I tried to take the trail from Lowman to Stanley before this trip and it too was closed from snow. Two weeks later, I tried again and it was open with no snow anywhere. Amazing the difference of just a couple of weeks.
@@spectreoverland I'll try easier places. I've gone on enough roads where you can't look down. Next summer I will go over an easy road, The Lolo Motorway with my car, that I sleep i in the front seat, drivers side. I'll be 80 next summer so I try to avoid too many jeep trails with dead falls. Never see any black bears or cougars or even moose. Carry bear spray plus my six gun. After watching you video I'll go on easy routes.
Cool video, I am not sure when you were there but we tried to get to Black Lake on July 6 and did not make it much farther than you. There was still a bunch of snow (and a guy shoveling it) with six miles still to go.
Thanks! I was there late June 2023. While I was very disappointed that I didn't make it, maybe it was for the better. With all of the rain I had overnight at a lower elevation, it was possible that Black Lake got up to a foot of snow. As I tried a route from Lowman to Stanley around the same time, it was also closed due to snow but 2 weeks later I managed to drive on through without a trace of snow.

Very cool!
Thanks! I am glad you liked it. The Kleinschmidt Grade was a pretty cool experience.

@@spectreoverland I’m finding it tough to time trips between snow & wildfire seasons 😆
