this anti-piracy shit is getting outta hand. but seriously, you can tell the week is gonna turn sour from the get-go if you listen closely. in the first song, it seems the senpai is trying to woo over the girlfriend in addition to trying to outdo the boyfriend, and sets a few extra short bursts of notes presumably designed to trip up the latter. what's more, starting at 1:15, the boyfriend gives a backing to the senpai's melody that's never reciprocated, and the melody's complexity only escalates from there, albeit only subtly and slightly. in roses, though, the senpai's focus shifts significantly from the girlfriend to the boyfriend, _lacing_ the entire song with complex note sequences designed to throw the boyfriend off. as a result, the song's melody barely holds together, being all over the place in reflection of the senpai being caught off guard and panicking to outdo the boyfriend. lastly, in thorns, all the pretense goes out the window. the melody becomes far more monotonous and repetitive, as if the senpai - henceforth the ex - has given up on actually making music and going straight for the boyfriend's throat. but despite the faster tempo, dnb hi-hat and irregular note timings, the song is ultimately less dense than roses; it's as if that shedding the senpai persona cost the ex some skill in the process. but, not to be deterred, the boyfriend goes so far as to disrespect the ex by actually _jumping in_ on his melody at 5:13, and copies him perfectly from there, netting him the win. it's surprising how much of a story music can tell.
Personally, I think the songs also reference dating sim visual novels to a certain extent. At first it looks appealing and interesting, showing off most of the characters at the start to catch your interest. Later down the line, it throws all sorts of dates and/or events at you, which depending on what you choose, can either improve on your relationships or throw off chunks of the progress you've made if you're not careful. Finally, near the end of the game, after all the big dating events have passed, there's nothing much to do but continue the repetitive day to day cycle until you reach the end. Although again, that's just my headcanon view on it.
i just realized something when blood clot senpai shows his final form, you can hear human senpai grunting in pain. later in blood clot senpai's dialogue he mentions borrowing a body, meaning he posessed senpai's body also meaning that the grunting sounds were from the real senpai, being in complete real pain. also meaning, the real senpai got very painfully killed
