@Victoria's Cantina - they weren’t register locked? I’m through with Target because they put product out only to have their registers lock you from buying them at checkout.
Strange that the top of the helmet looks so rough considering that it looks smooth on the movie.
I think it may have to do with the color. Vader’s helmet is always very tricky to get right. The toy has to be done slightly different from the movie so that it doesn’t get washed out in all black. That’s just my guess, but given the way other Vaders in this scale have turned out previously, I’d guess it has to do with that.
It was shinier in rotj but it had more smudges in empire and way more in anh. It was a bit shinier though but not completely
I think it's because of the lighting because I have this same figure it's a lot smoother, I don't know it does have a bit of texture I think it's just looks better in person
I like it but I think the Rogue One/New Hope Vader has a superior helmet. I'll probably pass on him but thank you for the review and comparison!

I own both the anh and this new esb 40th anniversary series.the anh figure was my favorite figure I owned for the longest time but I now like this new esb version better now,I think the sculpt is much better and I personally think it's also bigger than the anh.even though Amazon ruined the packaging with the way it shipped it I still love it.great review!
I pre-ordered him originally in the new Hasbro Black Series box. I then cancelled it after I saw this one. I have ANH Vader, (thanks to you) and the ROTJ Vader, which hopefully will get updated for the 40th Anniversary ROTJ waves. When I get him, my journey to the dark side will be complete. Great Review!!
Feel like Hasbro nailed the ANH helmet, but this new ESB helmet sculpt is still slightly off.

The paint isn’t about symmetry or lack thereof, it’s like make up. The paint was designed not to make the helmet just look like a glossy blob. Which it does a bit in the beginning of Return of the Jedi.
Ironically, the eyes in all the movies were red. It’s just after Star Wars it’s almost impossible to tell.
Anyway, onto the action figure, I love how he’s got new arms etc. I thought they would do for the great shoulder armour. I’m glad they are reusing certain parts as they are great.

Totally threw me when I was going to say it’s my favourite 6-inch Vader, and the Rogue One Mafex one (I think) was great.
Vader has a backside, for better or for worse, lol. And yes, the helmet sculpt was never symmetrical until Revenge of the Sith. They used paint details so that it would actually appear on camera. In ANH the lenses were amber colored, and then in ESB and ROTJ they were a translucent gray/black. I agree it looks like crap at the beginning of ROTJ. It's out of focus because of the lighting and lack of paint detail.
are you getting the carbonized Vader? mine arrived today and the box took a little damage due to amazon jamming it into a beyond to tight box but the figure its beautiful.

Thanks for making a comparison video, It's very useful to help fans decide what aspects they like or dislike between the different figures (Everyone has their own idea of ''The Perfect Vader'' but he had different helmets in all 5 movies he was in, so the imagination can affect how each person remembers and visualizes him depending on which movies were watched more than others (for each fan) Thanks again.

I have the RotJ Figuarts one, and the Black Series ANH, I saw people complaining about the head not being up to parr with this ESB version, but the closer I look I think it's not the proportions as much as the paint job. The red tint to the eyes from ANH does add a lot of detail and draw that disappears in the ESB version - which is accurate. The three quarter view of the mask does reveal that it is very accurate, Vader's lenses are supposed to be large and all. As a huge Vader fan, I feel I need the ESB and I have preordered him, but is he worth it? I feel his shoulders are a little too narrow for the large head perhaps? But then when I watch the movie, Vader's helmet is pretty gigantic. Ah, the peril! What do you think?
Awesome! Love the look of this figure, Hasbro really nailed it! IMO. Really hope they make a Revenge of the Sith Darth Vader, that is probably my favorite Vader design.

Thats a great looking Vader, I am going to have to watch ESB to check out whether there was that much silver on the helmet. Almost looked carbonized on camera.
It may not be 100% to the film in terms of the color, but I realize that with all-black figures like this they have to make concessions sometimes to not lose the detail. Part of it is my lighting too I’m sure. He looks even better in person.
I have studied the Darth Vader helmet and costume so much, I can confirm that the helmet is mainly gunmetal grey with small bits of black here and there
Just picked one of these up, he is quite the figure! I’m currently on a quest for a Clone Wars General Anakin Skywalker…can’t find him anywhere. Only finding Windu and Kenobi!
The one thing that need updating the most was overlooked .
Would have been an ez one :
Up down wrist swivel for the lightsaber hand .
For me no reason to buy this now .
Was very happy with last one but hated side to side wrist swivel .

Well I ended up getting the Yoda/Luke training pack for the yoda, even though its not my scale but Yoda is my favorite...and that just started a cascade of "now I should get this" domino affect:
I thought it would be great to have R2-D2 since he can interact with yoda via that funny scene of them fighting over the lamp. Plus he was there with Luke at Dagobah. I ended up getting the Bandai kit and will have fun painting it Dagobah dirty...but then I thought, It would be good to have a Luke in his fatigues to recreate the scene where he meets Yoda and since I will be getting R2 thats even more reason to have it. However its only thanks to the newly updated headsculpt and Photoreal, that I decided to acquire one, as I would not have purchased the earlier release because the portrait is too ugly...but NOW Im thinking, Luke duels Vader on Dagobah, and if Im going to have Luke in his Bespin fatigues, why not a Vader. it would be a 2-fer on the possibilities for displays, since Luke duels Vader in the cave and also Bespin.
So I then wanted to get a better look at this new Vader and your video came up. Must be a sign right V?

That being said I am disappointed with QC issues I see on your figure. The helmet is definitely not supposed to have texture on it. In the automotive world its called "orange peel" from a bad painting process. The paint did not properly adhere to the plastic on the helmet causing the rough (orange peel) finish. I am not sure if Hasbro used paint here or a gloss clear over the black plastic. Since the paint/clear coat did not adhere properly that is why it also scratched so easily and has multiple scratches just from shipping.
Hasbro has done some great stuff lately with The Black Series. Its sad to see a step backwards in QC. Hopefully not all the 40th ESB Vader figures are affected by this.
I bought the ANH Vader multiple times and the helmets were always a bit scuffed, so I assumed this was normal for this Vader. I have another one on order, so whenever that shows up I'll see if it's like that too or not.

Yes! And it pains me that I missed it. They’re very well hidden underneath all the armor and soft goods.

For stiff hands/plastic joints u can take a hair dryer and heat it up for a bit to make them more malleable
Now I can have Darth Vader riding my Camp Cretaceous T-Rex! What a time to be alive!

Thanks for the video and making notes on the subtle differences in the figures. The new release looks overall better, but I have to study the movie to figure out which one is more accurate. I like the shinier helmet. But I do think the eye lens is supposed to be brown rather than black. But they could have changed this in the movies between the different episodes. Like I said, I will have to really study the frames to see which is more faithful. Maybe both of them are.

Would you consider doing a comparison video of all your Vader figures and rank them from best to worst? I am curious to see how this vader compares to the mafex rogue one vader and the shfiguarts rotj vader.
I saw someone take the inner skirt robes off of the anh 40th vader and put them on the mafex rogue one vader and it looked awesome.
Do you think this vader head sculpt is the same as the 8" hyperreal vader head sculpt, but shrunken down?
Regarding the head sculpt, it's very possible (if not likely) that it's the Hyperreal Darth Vader helmet sized to proportion. That sounds like a solid thing to do for a video at some point, though it would be quite a bit of work. Maybe at some point.
Looks great. I’m kind of done with buying the Hasbro upgrades to only be upgraded again less than a year later. So I’ll enjoy this one but take a break till the Anniversary Jedi Vader is released.
I don't know if this is really an upgrade. Engineering-wise it is, but it's also based on a different film, so I don't really see it as an upgrade to the ANH Vader since that one's specific to that film.
I cannot get over the orange peel texture on the helmet. That is nuts. His helmet was polished to a mirror shine in Empire. Really hoping the regular release of this one is better.
I will be getting this for sure, the best looking Darth Vader out there and what I mean by that is, better looking cape as well as the body proportions.
I'd honestly recommend getting the S.H.Figuarts 3rd release of Darth Vader if you want your definitive ESB/ROTJ 1/12 Vader figure. Not to say this release is bad in anyway, it's just that the import release took this round in terms of paint and overall accuracy, whereas for the Black Series ANH Vader, that gave the imports a run for their money due to that amazingly sculpted helmet piece.
I have all of the SHF Vaders. I like the most recent one quite a bit but am not fond of how they painted the helmet. All of the detail is lost because it’s all one color.
Found the new Black Series 2020 Vader today at Target (case DCPI 087-16-8467) Pretty much the same figure. Still has the stiff hands & the not so spectacular paint job on the helmet. As you stated though, an excellent upgrade especially in the realms of pose ability. Real winner in this 2020 case in my opinion though is the Stormtrooper. Two words: Butterfly Joints!
This is going for £20 on KapowToys. Do you think I should sell my old removable helmet black series Vader and get this? The removable helmet figure seems to be quite disliked
I have Black Series A New Hope Vader and Shf ROTJ Vader. Pre-ordered this one with the new packaging since this could be the best looking and durable classic Vader figure ever made. Looking forward to mine arriving.
I love the SHF ROTJ Vader 2.0 figure but am not fond of how dull the helmet paint looks. For $20 this is a good deal and as you say, quite durable.
@@VictoriasCantina The Shf 2.0's helmet is too light and the cape feel loose and detached from the figure since it isn't stuck to the shoulders the way Black series do.

I am as well a huge fan of Vader so of course I have to own pretty much every Vader figure out there (still on my hunt I barely have that many right now lol) and so far this is my favorite Vader, the helmet looks slightly off but it's accurate to Empire Strikes Back.
I finally got me a 40th empire Vader on the way, can't wait to get the new figure =] I never noticed the eye lenses being red on the Hope Vader before though. I'll have 4 different Vader figures here soon, Hope 6 inch, Empire 6 inch, Cave of Evil, and an older Saga Legends Hoth Vader figure that I surprisingly found =] I'll do a video on all of them when the new Empire figure gets in

I don't know if you have since discovered that this Vader also has butterfly joints....it didn't seem like you noticed in the video...but he CAN hold his lightsaber with both hands. I think this Vader by far is the best Hasbro has given us.... please let me know if you succeed at him holding his lightsaber

I didn't initially order this Vader, I grabbed the carbonized one instead. After seeing the updates and changes to match ESB Vader' plus the upgraded lightsaber. I need one!

How well does this vader grip the lightsaber?
My biggest issue with the a new hope fig is how poorly it held the saber and how easy falls out .
As noted in the video the hands are really tight and I couldn't get the lightsaber into the left hand. I could heat it up and loosen it, but that shouldn't be something you have to do. So yeah, it's not loose at all!

I'm not feeling it. The Rogue One Darth Vader by Medicom Toys Mafex line is the definitive one in my opinion.
I have that one as well and it's great, but not perfect either. The sculpting of the outfit is pretty soft and the lower robes are restrictive. The cape is quite awful too.
@@VictoriasCantina I agree with all that, actually. What makes it the best one for me is the helmet and face mask sculpt. It just seems to capture film accuracy more than the other Vader action figs I've seen. I like it even more than the Hot Toys versions.

Awesome review! Awesome pics and poses! The only thing I'd say about the figure, (which is awesome) and indeed for most of the Lightsaber wielding characters is that I really wish they included at least hand that has the forward tilting swivel joint, like with Count Dooku and Maul. It lends for much better and more natural looking sword poses. Hopefully Hasbro catches on. Again though, excellent review!
More interchangeable hands would be nice in order to do stuff like that. Maybe someday we'll get a deluxe Vader that comes with all sorts of useful stuff? Something like the Hyperreal Vader but in 6". Thanks for watching!

Thanks! I think it may have to do with the colorization and them not wanting to lose too much detail with all the black. But that’s just a guess.
After watching this video, I think Hasbro has done a good job on the changes / update which justifies the 'repack' or more accurately another Vader release. I'm now looking forward to getting this!

Looks so good! I'm pretty content with my ANH Vader, though. The size and shape of the helmet on the ANH version just looks a tad better to me.
I prefer the ANH costume myself, but as far as the figures go, I'd give this one a slight edge based on engineering.

Nice one! I think the perfect 6" vader is the newer figuarts rotj vader tho. Great helmet sculpt on that one, not to mention all the accessories. The only thing holding that figure back is poor leg articulation due to the rubber skirt.
me7ogo 7 I do have all the SHF Vaders. I like that one a lot but like you said, the skirt inhibits movement. Also the helmet could have been painted better.
Here's hoping they do the concept Darth Vader in the black series in the future.

Great review! The most recent SH Figuarts ROTJ Vader is still King of the Vaders, but this latest Hasbro one gives it a run for its money. Might actually pick it up.

It seemed until Hot Toys released the ESB Vader that Hasbro started to buck up. Honestly, 40 years on and a toy company in the country where Star Wars originated from couldn’t tell the variants of Vader in all movies he appeared in? Laughable. Dumb.
This Vader looks pretty definitive to me. It’s not perfect but I can’t wait to check this out when I get mine
I think this is as close as we’ve gotten so far, although I really do enjoy the S.H. Figuarts Return of the Jedi Darth Vader as well. For $20 you can’t beat it.
I agree! However that figuarts one I believe has been discontinued. From what my friend told me which is unfortunate because that would probably be my favorite Vader.
one thing I wish was different I wish it also came with a lightsaber hilt that could hang from the belt.
At least we can disconnect it and hang it from the belt just fine. But yes, I feel like these figures should ALWAYS come with duplicate hilts specifically for that. Just like SH Figuarts does it.

Wow, is your ANH Vader old and sun faded because his helmet is way more gray than black compared to the new ESB Vader. My ANH Vader is not that light of a shade of gray, so something has gone terribly wrong with your figure. 🤷🏻♂️
There are three variations of the ANH Vader. During the 40th ANH line, there was a version with bold red lenses. It was very quickly replaced by the dark brown lenses. Then when the figure got repackaged into the main line, they repainted the neck and bottom of the helmet to be more of a light gray color. That third version is the one used in this video.
Can you take off the head on the figure? Just want to know.

Something looks a tad off with the helmet sculpt. It's a good one, but it's not as accurate and on point to how he looks in the film compared to how the A New Hope Vader figure is which definitely nailed the look.
I think it's as close as we're going to get. The lighting will really affect how it looks. In the film it was obviously lit a lot more darkly most of the time. In person it looks a lot better.

The texture on the head made me pass on this. Would you say this is a scaled down version of the hyperreal vader? Or are there difference in the helmet scuplt. Awesome review as always btw!
