    Just stumbled upon your channel because I was looking for some tips on the Nighthaunt army I'm starting, and I have to applaud your down-to-earth approach! No "then you wet blend this tiny bit for 2 hours until it's worthy of a Golden Demon on all 50 of these cannon fodder objective holders" nonsense. Just a solid guide on how to make your army to look great (and cheeky corner cutting). Thank you!

    What I love about your videos is your clear style of presentation and the simplicity of your method. I think people who are new to the hobbies would benefit tremendously from watching these videos and hobby vets could learn a few things too. Good stuff!

      Thanks a lot! I think we get hung up too easily on stuff looking perfect before we're really satisfied with it. Taking box covers or the like as inspiration is one thing, but most of us don't have the time or manpower of a whole studio to turn out armies like that! Especially when we're getting started with something, finding a satisfactory balance between Good and Finished is the trick, and that's where I try to sit.

      Lord Ashenwyte - Fairly New here to this hobby and I agree 100% Glad I ran into this channel, I’ve got some Nighthaunts to paint! Those GW technical paints look darn good! Trying to think how I can do it with Vallejo Inks and army painter washes?! OR for consistency I may just buy those two paints!

    New to painting and the hobby (3 months) and as anyone that wants to get better I search for videos to get ideas and techniques to build on. Your videos are a joy to watch. Thanks for covering this. This'll be a fun challenge as I don't buy specialty paints to do my model work. It's always a fun challenge to ge the right color, and consistency in homemade constrast paints, especially the more "technical" ones. The ice is a great idea lore-wise. 💙

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing that's spooky around here is that joke. ;D The Nighthaunt Gloom works pretty well by itself, but I think the Nuln Oil helps to really seal it in and bring the drybrush together. It'll be interesting to play around with it over some different colours, with different choices of shade over the top!

    Absolutely mind blowing, you share some really fantastic tips here which I am unbelievably grateful for. I use Army Painter paints myself and could possibly match up those blues and greens, but I think I'll get the exact same ones as yourself from GW, because the effect they give is brilliant, really brilliant.
    Your passion for painting miniatures really puts a smile on my face and gives me so much confidence every video that I watch of yours. You truly keep me motivated and 100 percent entertained.

      I think there's something to be said for trying materials outside your usual wheelhouse. I know I got started on Citadel and since I know the range so well it's where I'll usually turn to when I want to try something, but I have a fair few Army Painter products as well, Vallejo, Foundry and the like... Whatever works! Hexwraith Flame is a dead useful bit of kit to have in the toolbox - most of Citadel's Technical range are, in fact. :D

    I was gifted a nighthaunt army for my birthday and have been struggling to figure out how to paint them (everything I do looks awful....CURSE YOU DRY BRUSHING)
    However yours in the first video I've come across that was easy enough to understand, and now my dry brushing looks much, much less terrible.
    Please keep up the good work!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy birthday! :D Glad to hear you're getting on board with the Nighthaunt. They're an awesome spectacle on the table, and the way that their basic units grow more powerful with characters near to them layering on talents and abilities is really fitting for an army of specters drawn to strong wills. Drybrushing can be a little daunting at first since it never looks quite 'right,' but with a little practice you'll find it's got its uses on just about everything.

    I've been using these new paints to paint up my models from the box set. You do it pretty much the same way as myself. I ended up getting a start collecting Malignants box set as well to expand my new army at a reasonable price online, I'm just about done building & under coating the mortis engine. The new models are great. I think the new paints make the models very effective looking.mim going to buy a star drake at the weekend. That'll be my winter project. Your models are good.

    Excellent chainrasp video.
    Ive been watering down my hexwraith flame nighthaunt gloom shades and doing many layers for my fade effects.
    I'm definitely going to try out your white drybrushing technique as I think it will be a HUGE time saver.
    As well I started using Incubi Darkness for their robes but I really like how your straight N.H. Gloom with the dry brush effect came out.
    Thank you for this video.
    All you need now is several long minutes of silent painting with a carefully selected/crafted soundtrack behind it as you paint..heh heh...Sorastro's Imperial Assault Channel is amazing for that. I think your getting to his level of tutorial and quality. Actually, I think your actual painting is equal to his stuff. :)
    The Nighthaunt Gloom painted over Corax white primer on the tombstones followed by a wash of Nuln Oil really make for that perfect creepy old tombstone. A fast edge highlight on them and those are rocked out in no time if you do all the tombstones at once.

    Hi Sonic, I watch a lot of painting vids but they all seem to make things too technical, you are so easy going and laid back that I'm going to start again myself, but not with wargames miniatures they are too small at my age. I love the channel, stay well and take care.

      I've seen some really neat game pieces in larger scales recently. A lot of board games are coming out with cool moulded figures included that I've meant to tackle at some point. I do try and keep things relatively simple, in the main; we don't need to reinvent the wheel every time we want to paint something! :D Thanks for dropping in!

      I hear you. My eyesight started to go about 2 years ago. Between my Glasses, my magnifying led light and all the extra lights around my painting area, its starting to look like a science lab. I really should have gotten into miniature wargaming about 10 years ago. At least my Tau army would be done by now, lol.
      Arcadia quest is a great miniatures game with really awesome miniatures and their scale is a bit bigger/easier on the eyes (except thier damn anime eyes, granted there a lot easier than painting eyes on a space marine or tau figure).

    Would grey seer work as primer to these guys? Followed by an overbrushz or ulthuan grey? Or could you go straight to the technical paints after the initial primer?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup! I'd suggest that you do put the Ulthuan Grey over it, though, since that's got a slight blue tint to it which will work better with the rest of the colours.

    I'm going to dive in and buy my first medium starter set and it will be Tempest of Souls. Love your painting styles and I'm trying to work out the paints I'll need. I'm stuck on the Ulthurn grey you use, I can get vellejo glaicer blue that is apparently the alternative. Or maybe I'll mix up some white to make the grey but for £1.99 the vellejos a bargain. Any chance you have the glacier blue that you could compare? Paints can get really expensive!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm honestly not too sure what the nearest equivalent would be for Ulthuan Grey from the Vallejo range. If someone else has said Glacier Blue, try it and see! Though I'd look for something that's almost entirely white, if you can find it - you don't need much colour in the drybrush stage at all.

    I've just discovered your channel, and after four or five videos I can say it's fantastic: your techniques are so simple, it's amazing you consistently achieve so excellent a result for tabletop minis. I guess it's a question of knowing when to do each thing, as you did with the Nuln Oil (I was skeptical too!). Also, your explanations are clear, and you manage to transmit the inherent fun of painting.
    Also, on a side note, your accent is amazingly clear for us foreigners, compared to other tutorials. May I ask where are you from?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it's really a case of wondering what might happen and then going for it... There's a fair few videos where I'll wonder out loud whether or not something will work before just deciding to go for it! Lucky for me they usually turn out alright, and that's just a question of experience. It never hurts to try, though!
      I'm from New Zealand originally, but I've lived in the UK and now Germany, so I'm pretty used to having to keep my voice in check so that I can be understood. It's just habit by now, but when I first moved to the UK I had a lot of difficulty with my accent not making sense to the locals!

    New sub, thanks for this, Glad I ran across the channel! Fairly new to this hobby, this will help a lot! Newbies need simple. I find trying to paint everything beyond table top quality (from tutorials) takes a lot of time! This was super easy. I’m wondering if I can do the job with my Vallejo Inks and Army panther washes? But those new technical paints look super good AND would provide consistent results across all the Nighthaunts I have to paint (Storm of Sigmar + Tempest of Souls and some additional Haunts)

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Vallejo inks and Army Painter's washes are both really good (I particularly like the bottled Quickshade stuff) but they work very differently to the Technical paints. You might find it worth picking up those couple of Citadel paints and use the Vallejo stuff you already have to finish off the rest. It's really about finding something you like the look of and just sticking to it across an army! It doesn't have to be any specific brand to get the job done how you like. :)

      Sonic Sledgehammer Studio ok thanks, good Points there. I’ll have to buy the technical paints because as you said they work a little differently than the Inks/Shades. And I really liked the look of this style of Nighthaunts, so why not get them. 👍🏼

    Your Miniature looks amazing. Doing mine aswell but i got an issue with the drybrushing. The swipes are not looking asclean or decent as yours, even tough the color is almost fully removed from the brush. Got any advices? My thanks in advance.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes I have a similar issue where I'll leave behind way more than expected. It might seem silly, but make sure you're wiping the sides of your brush just a little if you're using a flat-edged brush, too, or the collected paint up the sides can make a mess! Otherwise try using less pressure - really just whisper-light little flicks that barely touch the miniature.

    Amazing video ! Just a quick question, do you use varnish on your models ?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on what I'm painting, and what I want the finished product to look like. Because varnish will smooth out a finish quite a lot, it'll change up the surface of a paint job and can change how drybrushing or shading looks when it's done - it pays to plan ahead a little if you're planning it. If I'm painting something plastic, it's rare that I'll varnish it unless it's going to see a lot of use. Metal miniatures I like to varnish so that they're protected from falling over and chipping under their own weight!

    Very quick question - what brand are the brushes you're using with the wood style handles?? They look like they keep an amazing point. Thanks very much

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a couple with the wood style brushes, but the ones I think you mean are literally so cheap I can't find the brand online! I just pick them up from my local stationary store. They're a couple euros a pop and they last for a month or two before the bristles don't meet at a point any more, but in that time they're golden little monsters.

    • @RobbieB2606

    Hey I've really been enjoying your videos and I've started painting some minis for DnD. It seems like the GW Citadel paints are great. Would you recommend a particular set of paints to start with? The base, shade, and layer sets?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The paint sets are pretty good value if you do want everything in them. The Base paint set for example is a really good one, though I'd probably pick up Retributor Armour as well to round out the range of colours. You can't go wrong with the Shades as well, but since they're larger pots they don't come in a single set; Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil are must-haves, and from there you can pick and choose what you might need on top.
      Don't be afraid to experiment with different paint manufacturers, too, if you've got a place local to you that offers them. Personally, I like Citadel's range for the vibrancy of the colours they produce and the range of awesome Technical paints, and there's something strangely comforting about knowing 'it's the right colour,' even if I am technically painting a fantasy figure!

    I love your video, but I'm really not a fan of these technical paints, especially hexwraith flame. I wish people were making videos about how to paint them like they are on the box art, but instead GW is pimping out these ugly quick and easy new paints.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine's really a question of time. I haven't got the spare hours in the day to paint an army like they appear on the box, so 'finished' is what I'm going for. The technical paints work pretty well for what I'm after! I've seen some really good pointers on how to use the Hexwraith green over at twitter.com/MengelMinis if you're looking for something smoother, but where it concerns a horde of spooks that're going to come off the board as fast as I can put them down? Eh, I'll stick to the drybrush. ;D
