    Never gotten the chance to fire a 9x19mm Luger, but we had a couple in 7.65 x (too lazy to look it up) that were neat. Second experience with a bottle-necked handgun after the Tokarev.

    • @andrewromig9753
      @andrewromig9753 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably 7.65x21mm - also known as .30 Luger and the original cartridge Lugers were chambered in (9x19 came later as an option).
      Fun fact: .30 Luger is itself a shortened version of 7.65x25mm Borchardt cartridge used in the C93 Borchardt - the Luger's direct mechanical predecessor - which was partially developed by Georg Luger as he was Borchardt's assistant at the time.

    • @walkingcontradiction223
      @walkingcontradiction223 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewromig9753 Thanks! It was a pretty decent cartridge, not sure why 9x19mm became ubiquitous and it dropped off in popularity precipitously. Ease of manufacturing?

    • @andrewromig9753
      @andrewromig9753 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@walkingcontradiction223 Ease of manufacturing would be basically equivalent once 9mm guns hit full production.
      If memory serves, Georg Luger developed the 9x19mm cartridge (hence why it is often referred to as "9mm Luger") in response to a request from the German military because they determined a bigger, heavier, slower bullet was preferable - a very sound premise when exclusively using FMJ ammunition as basically all militaries do.
      While I don't know this for an absolute fact, I have no doubt that members of the buying public, when presented with both choices, largely leaned towards the military cartridge on the logic that ammunition would be more readily available and that military stuff is just cooler. From there, I suspect it snowballed on the civilian market.

    • @walkingcontradiction223
      @walkingcontradiction223 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewromig9753 Right, availability is everything when it comes down to most Citizen's choice of firearms.. It's interesting that Germany went with a easier to manufacture round the 9x19; where the Soviet Union hung onto the 7.62x25 until they went with the 9x18.
      Just to avoid patents? Just to put their "mark" on it? To be a fly on the wall of some of the decisions would have been interesting.

      @@guaporeturns9472For the great war it was excellent due to the high magazine capacity, ability to attack the stock, good accuracy and good damage from the 7,63 cartridge. The only thing that truly sucked was the loading system and the slights but realistically speaking, at 10 yards sights don't even matter you're shooting to survive. I would personally still take the P08 Luger because of the reliability and reload speed but both were completely viable for use, just ask the Chinese.
