Yes I know I cut out some sections. If I hadn't I wouldn't have released it, so you're welcome. This video is brought to you by admitting some things I say suck but that's not worth throwing everything out.
I can't believe you've never seen this show! *Stephen Christopher Anthony* played the lead when I saw the North American tour in Seattle. He made one of the most challenging roles ever actually look easy and natural. I've NEVER seen/heard anything like it (and musicals are my life). If you have a chance to see/hear Stephen Christopher Anthony in anything, don't hesitate!
Hey Sam. Ive been watching your reactions from almost very beginning and I enjoy them very much. I would like to ask you to do reaction/analyse of Tori Amos - Winter live from Montreux 91/92. Im really interested what you think about it. Many thanks!
Choly i totally agree with u there. i saw DEH live and the music is so incredible i just wish the story wasn’t so bad lol. the entire second act is just a copout :-(( (and i don’t mean musically; the music is still super strong but the story just kinda falls apart. and evan doesn’t face ANY consequences for his shitty actions)
@@t0ad_ In the book, Evan is very aware that he didn't face the consequences that he should have. He himself admits that he deserved the worst. And he said it throughout the story. I personally don't agree with you but I just thought I could point that out.
@@t0ad_ he wasn't instantly forgiven by Zoe or her family. There's an awkward tension between them at the end of the book. The only person who's really back in his corner is his mom even though she's astonished by the choices he made.
what you said about starting out very softly-I don’t know how familiar you are with Dear Evan Hansen, but one big thing about his character is his social anxiety. he stutters and mumbles when he speaks, and it’s only when he’s well into a song that that aspect of his speech falls away and we hear him singing loud and clear. the easy spoken singing at the beginning is a character thing :)
I've been dying to see you react to Ben Platt! When you said how he wasn't worrrying about technique and was letting the character lead, I think that's why so many people connect so deeply to his singing -- he always leads with emotion and his technique feels effortless, so the listener can just focus on that emotion and be taken on a glorious ride. I love hearing your analysis on these reaction videos because, as a complete newb, your commentary always sparks a deeper understanding and appreciation of the music for me.
If you've seen the show, he's starting out talking to Connor's parents, mainly Connor's mother. He's seated upstage behind the dinner table, but as his story goes on and he gets caught up in his own wish fulfillment, he comes out from behind the table and moves downstage. There's also a lighting change as he comes out from behind the table that pulls the focus from the group of Evan and the Murphys to just Evan that reinforces the move from the reality of the dinner to Evan's inner world. The staging and lighting are brilliant and reinforce everything that's happening in the song and with the character. It made what was happening super clear, and it wrecked me emotionally.
@@Tunarth It’s one of the great written scenes because of the staging and lighting. It’s pretty much like a modern Shakespeare-style setup where a character, usually the main, is all by themselves and is talking inside about something, in this musical theater case though, their monologues are singing so the set setups have to be really on-the-spot.
I gotta comment again....I think it's really brilliant that he can add the effect of sounding nervous to fit the character. He also sings while SOBBING - I MEAN REALLY?!?!?!?!
Ben Platt has such a gorgeous voice, and his performance from DEH is so emotional and raw, it always astonishes me how in character he gets during a performance. I waited for so long for you to react to him singing this song!
Its Mags I don’t get why people hate it that much. Like seriously, when Freddie Mercury has an abnormally fast vibrato it’s called breathtaking, amazing, pure talent, etc., but when Ben Platt does it, it’s bad.
I wish he would have reacted to Waving through a Window cuz the BREATH CONTROL in that piece is ridiculous. His emotion driven vibrato and stuff near the end- ugh! Incredible!
This is why I appreciate you SO MUCH Sam. I've had voice teachers that would harp on all those little things you pointed out. I love that you understand the necessity for change to classical technique to get a sound that fits the emotion and character you are portraying.

Ugh, I love this show and I love Sam. So combining the two was a pleasant surprise. I like that you were able to appreciate all the emotion that Ben put into this character. I would love to see you react to Ben's song 'Grow As We Go' as well.
I really appreciate these videos. I aspire to becoming a voice teacher in the future, so getting a head start with some of the terms and being able to start applying them myself is really awesome. I absolutely love Ben's performance despite all the things that would normally bug me about a performance (usually Rs kill me). The presence is so strong in his performance that it meets the character and supports the imperfect technique. His performance as Evan always brings me to tears or gives me goosebumps. I adore it
It's performances like this that makes me really love musicals. I don't know anything about singing and I can't even carry a tune, but if a singer can really connect to the audience as well as his character and deliver emotions so deep it touches the audience's souls, then I deem it a spectacular show.

I saw Dear Evan Hansen this past weekend on the West End, such a good show! I loved Ben Platts voice before this and he got me interested in the show, so glad I got to see it; I also love his song covers from the Politician
This is one of my favorite tracks off the Dear Evan soundtrack and Platt does a wonderful job performing with his iconic vocals! Excellent job teaching us some voice lessons and choices of his style of singing! Most educational!

@@emryshale4989 Yeah he could just be socially awkward. I remember the one and only time I saw this show live and basically there was this very pretty girl sitting right behind our seats and she said somethin at the end of the song, she said, "This guy's an asshole." I laughed at hearing that and so did her mom, but I turned to face her and I explained to her during the intermission that that song, and even You Will be Found, was a way to show us just what Evan is willing to do and the stories and lies he's willing to make-up in order to not be forgotten and to not be a loner again. He refuses to be seen as a loner and refuses to be forgotten again. Then her mom also explained something that neither I nor my mom thought of before. Then he realizes that it isn't worth it to lie to his crush's family and in the end everything still comes crashing down around him, but, one good thing came out of it, he does become more confident in himself and he doesn't feel hurt when his crush stops talking to him because he's more comfortable with his friends that he has that he hadn't before.
Hi Sam. I love your videos. You may not want to do another Ben Platt reaction, but I'd love to see you react to him singing Waving Through A Window from the same show.
I'm not a singer at all and have little understanding of the technical aspects of musicals, but I can absolutely appreciate how this song was written. All the changes in modulation (not even sure if that's the right word for it) that incorporate the changes behind the lyrics are just amazing to me. The fact that someone wrote it with that understanding of the speed and unintended manner in which the alteration of the story line starts growing out of control just boggles my mind. It gives me a whole different layer of appreciation when I hear well-written, well-performed songs that are a story within a story. On another note, his variation between the higher and lower notes with his falsetto (still no clue if that's the right way to say it) reminds me of teenage boy voice changes, which is totally what I thought he was going for specifically as another layer of that song.
i always love your videos! your commentary has a quality that i can’t find in other videos. i think it would be interesting if you could react to roth bart baron’s song with HANA (the studio session version). i feel like it has a unique sound to it and i would be interested in your feedback
The second you talked about the “r”’s and said “you just gotta trust yourself” I almost threw my phone. Every time I sing this song and I get to this and bridge, I get so scared, but I just leap. 💚💙. Thank you so much for this video.
Please more broadway related stuff!! I think your take on voice is so unique, and broadway voices of course have to be great to be successful, but the choices and techniques are all so different. I’d love to hear you cover more!
Now I'm also upset that I didn't get to see him in Dear Evan Hansen. Wow. Sam, PLEASE do a react video to Allen Stone's live Give You Blue or Brown Eyed Lover. I would love to know what you think of his voice and how much emotion he puts into his songs!
Wow, that was beautiful beyond words and I loved hearing your thoughts on this. 🙊 If we are talking musical though, Katie Rose Clarke rendition of Still hurting is a powerful one a well.
I saw Ben Platt on Broadway for Dear Evan Hansen during for his last week, and no words, just tears. He was spectacular. It is going to be unfair to see another actor playing this role because Ben Platt played it masterfully and to me at least, no one is gonna be even close to his performance. Thank TH-cam for these videos around.

DO MORE FROM HIS NEW RECORD PLEASE! They're all emotional and incredible songs. I'd recommend "Ease My Mind" and "Grow As We Go"
I love this performance
Ben Platt is one of my all time favourite vocalists.
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO REACT TO DEH OMG YES AHHHHH
I, too, wish I could've seen Ben as Evan live 😔💙
Ben Platt is Amazing!!!!!!
i always love your videos! your commentary has a quality that i can’t find in other videos. i think it would be interesting if you could react to roth bart baron’s song with HANA (the studio session version). i feel like it has a unique sound to it and i would be interested in your feedback
The second you talked about the “r”’s and said “you just gotta trust yourself” I almost threw my phone. Every time I sing this song and I get to this and bridge, I get so scared, but I just leap. 💚💙. Thank you so much for this video.
Incredible performance by Ben , so talented 🤩🤩
Magnetic ♥️ get lost in his voice 🔥🔥
How Sam looks when watching Ben Platt is also how I feel when I look at Ben Platt
I will kill for Ben Platt.
I’m just leaving it at that.
I damn well love the freeze frames Sam picks for his vids
I'm just gonna be that person...
"Performing live gives me SUCH a rush."
Just saw the road show in San Diego... Stephen Christopher Anthony was Evan and was amazing. Great show great cast.
I just want someone to mention about the Sams thumbnail face
be the change
Sam Johnson OMG I love you 😭👋
Please more broadway related stuff!!
Ben Platt 😭♥️
I saw this yesterday in London and Marcus Harman was Evan (Sam Tutty's Alternate) and he was astounding. You need to see this show x
Wow, that was beautiful beyond words and I loved hearing your thoughts on this. 🙊
If we are talking musical though, Katie Rose Clarke rendition of Still hurting is a powerful one a well.
Sam reacting to Benny I'm DYING
I'm so happy thank you Sam
Also this is my favorite performance of one of my favorite songs
since you are reacitng to musical theater I would love to hear your thoughts on "(Just a) Simple Sponge" from the spongebob musical
Yess!!!
i think you would be able to give a super in depth analysis of cynthia erivo singing “im here” from the color purple! crazy good pacing, sustained belt, and emotion
Oh yeahhh! You should react to more of Ben Platt, he's soo good :)
And Jeremy Jordan too (She used to be mine or some other live performances)
I'd be curious for you to have a look at Jeremy Jordans (It's all coming back to me now) - I'm wondering how good or bad his technique is!
You need to react to Ben Platt singing “Somewhere”
Seen a bunch of reaction vids recently. As always yours are simply the most informative and useful. Great vid.
Ps. Love Ben Platt
Any chance you could review Haley Reinhart singing Creep with post modern jukebox? Would be really interested to see it broken down.
Do more musical theatre songs please! I really love your channel and your constructive criticism! You rock.
I'd love to take singing lessons with you, but Argentina is a bit far from the US.
Can we all just appreciate the thumbnail. Thank you
