“It’s a strange reality of the modern popular song that the first time it’s played is when it’s recorded. Sometimes a song will be finished for deadline in the studio the day the thing is cast in stone forever. I know that songs and arrangements evolve and develop over time; that somewhere around the twentieth time it’s played for a live audience, a song finally completes itself. That, among other things, is what makes a good live recording unique. I’ve often thought that live performance means being well prepared and then waiting for the inevitable, unexpected thing to happen. We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…
Of course, @larrygoldings does more than just accompany me. His growing presence in the world of jazz is well acknowledged, both for his own recordings and live performances and as a member of a good number of team efforts. I tend to form musical (and personal) relationships with other players and then stick with them for years. @Arnomac and David Lasley have worked with me since the mid-‘70s and others nearly as long (Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Mike Landau, Kate Markowitz, Valerie Carter…)
After my great friend, producer and pianist Don Grolnick died in ’96, I performed with a number of excellent keyboard players. It was during the recording of my October Road album in ’02 that I worked with Larry. Russ Titelman had booked him to play on “Mean Old Man” along with Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Clifford Carter on synth, and the fine seven-string jazz guitarist, @JohnPizzarelliOfficial. This was an incredible band, and after hearing Larry Goldings’ solo on that song, first time through, he pinned it. That was our introduction and he’s been my first call ever since.
Then there’s the bus factor. You see, someone’s playing may be great, but what’s it going to be like spending 10 hours a day riding to the next gig with them for a couple of months? Larry’s Bus Factor is not a factor for he is a bus riding fool, for a fact.
Part of his talent is his ability to “split his hands.” Though not as painful as it sounds, it does require great focus and skill to play a melody/accompaniment with his right hand and, with his left hand, (often on another keyboard) play a distinct bass pattern. This Larry can do with effortless grace, and he has made this One Man Band show possible. He is a committed father, brother, and son, and I am in his debt. I saw you in Calgary 6 years ago. My late husband meant to buy 2 tickets on the floor in row six. He bought 6 tickets on the floor in row 2. We donated the other 4 tickets to the Mustard Seed in Calgary. The gal seated next to me lost everything in the Fort McMurray fire. You sang Fire and Rain. She was on her knees crying. I cried with her . You were in intermission and you stayed to sign autographs and talk. She got your autograph. See you in Edmonton. Your music has always had a place in my heart. The love and richness I found in my attempt to sound as you do brought me the best days I have/will ever know. I had a stroke and I'm hard pressed to use my right hand, 12 years now, but I keep trying and getting closer to the old me. Thank you James. Saw him in London a few years ago. During the interval instead of going for a (well earned!) break backstage he sat out front and chatted with the audience for 15 minutes until the band rejoined him. An absolute gentleman - serene and untroubled by fame...and an extraordinary writer and performer of songs.
Same engaging smile, same sparkling eyes, same pure, clear, beautiful voice I’ve listened to for most of my life. Thank you JT, for bringing me the sound track to my life. I will be forever grateful.

Love hearing JT stripped back down to the simplest, purest form, just one voice and one guitar. This song has an added layer of meaning since I lost my best friend to Brian cancer. She was one of those rare people who just "got" who I was and we nudged each other to be better versions of ourselves. Love this song

I am soooo glad/happy/grateful that you made your home in the beautiful Berkshires!!! My mom was born and raised there. She moved to NJ after the war because there was no work in MA. She met my dad and they married! Both are deceased now and missed. 🤧
I grew up visiting the Berkshires and still visit family relatives there.
Family members live in beautiful Lenox, East Otis, Pittsfield, Housatonic, etc. Such a beautiful area in the USA.
LOL, I will be 67 in August (have followed you since 1971), my funeral arrangements are already made. I will be buried in Housatonic with the beautiful mountains and sun and moon looking over me. I can't say enough about how much I love💓the Berkshires!!!!!

The Berkshires are my happy place.. I passed through adolescence into adulthood there. I found myself there. I am lucky enough to go there frequently.. the theatre is a wonderful place saved by those with vision.

I've heard this song so many times over the course of my life, I sometimes forget just how much there is to like about it. I saw you in Sydney about 20 years back at our big venue where the big performers played. During the interval when the lights came on you sat on the edge of the stage and chatted to anyone who wanted to come over. I watched in awe from the gallery. I have not seen this before or since. I have enormous respect for you personally and professionally. It is so cool to think that you lived in Sydney for a time. Interesting.

Brilliant! Something strange happens when I listen to this song and many many others written by you. They are a constitutive part of my life, I don't know how to explain it,. My father was a big fan of yours and I grew up listening to your music from the cradle, you music has always been there with me. I was only able to attend a concert of yours here in Buenos Aires when I was very young, in 1994 (you played with Sting) but the second chance to attend your live concert in 2017 was canceled due to the rain, a pity really; although surely there will be another chance soon. You are the best! Thank you very for everything and best wishes from Buenos Aires!

What a horror it would have been to have torn down that beautiful performance hall. It’s such a great place for an intimate evening with the musical gifts of the famous balladeer James Taylor. James, you amaze me with the intricacy of your lyrics, and the folksy-jazz chord fusion, hammer-ons and pull-offs! Wish they could clone you as you were so we could keep this talent alive for hundreds of years to come. That Olson guitar just sings - and I have to admit, far better than the original Gibson J-50 that got you started. Every great artist deserves an upgrade - glad you got the Olson!
Me and my best mate, Bruce, would learn so many of his songs when we were at school.. To this day I still get a tingle of happiness (and sadness) when I hear this man sing and play..
I was lucky to see this tour at the Chicago Theatre. Most memorable and it sure drew me closer to JT as a true American hero. I hope it happens again in whichever form the maestro chooses before it's all over for our generation.

This opening video to One Man Band is brilliant and James Taylor's voice over is perfect - I must have watched this a thousand times - love it. Oh to play guitar like JT.
Been to three JT concerts. One in the 70s at a club in the Village when I was briefly a New Yorker. the Mann in Philly in the 90s and once more, a few years back, at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philly with Bonnie Raitt & Co. I really enjoyed James by his lonesome and someday would like to repeat seeing him solo in a smaller venue.
