    This video is a really good strategy I started using if you have a spending problem on magic like I do. If you have a large collection and sit down with all the cards you have. You'll start to build decks. You'll start to see synergy. Before you know it, you've got 115 cards in a pile and all you need to do is cut down. Instead of buying more cards to optimize the strategy you think can work.

      I definitely fit this category of magic person. I scroll through EDHRec most of the time and see what others are building/using and go from there. This way of building is probably more budget friendly

    love this deckbuilding strategy!
    ... I couldn't possibly imagine having a storm-kiln artist and an ancient copper dragon lying around not being used, they're both so useful!

      I just didn't have decks for them! But they were kept close and on-hand because they absolutely needed to find a home haha

    Great video, this is my philosophy for EDH "build with what you have", when I sort my cards I get ideas for different decks.

    I did this recently! Started off wanting to brew Temur Wheels/Control, quickly went down to Izzet with Jeska/Kraum but ended up going right down to Mono-Red Jeska/Kediss big damage tempo.
    Still might go back to Izzet but how I went from 3 colours down to 1 was funny.

    What a weird coincidence. I made a modal-type decklist specifically for Brudiclad, because I had 3 builds I wanted to try out in succession!

    This is how I created a 5color token deck - I was sorting cards and had Brudiclad and Chatterfang side by side and went "waaaaait a minute..."

    I was literally looking over my Sedris deck to try and make it less generic "reanimator good stuff" and add more of a personal "nothing goes to waste" touch to it. In doing so, I looked at Feldon of the Third Path and the Phyrexian Obliterator I was thinking of cutting. At that point I thought, "what if, instead of reanimating Obliterator, I leave it where it is and let Feldon do the work? How can I make that crazier?"
    Then I thought of Brudiclad and had the exact same process you just described roll through my head, which resulted in this 3 card janky combo landing in the 99 of my Reaper King artifact deck.

    I’ve never built a deck by sorting through my collection, but I do love sorting through my collection to build decks.
    I’ve built five decks now from cards I’ve pulled out of my boxes. Are any of them optimised or high power? No. But do they all do interesting and fun things with cards I otherwise wouldn’t have played? Oh yes!

    just realized that this was the deck you played on Elder Dragon Hijinks. I hope you have another chance to get it off the ground :)
    great breakdown on ground up deckbuilding; I am going to have to give that a try and see where it takes me :)

    I love this type of video but I know I just couldnt do a deck this way. I'm always building from the top down
    Maybe one day I will have a revelation of this kind.
    Only deck I have tried to build from the down top was a Diablo Themed deck. I tried to find Magic Cards that were looking similar to character/demons/monsters/spells from the game and finding a way to make the deck functional. WAS is important there. It was taking me too long and I did abandon the project. Maybe one day I will look at the pile again, but it is so much work for me

      I'm with you, I don't normally build this way but it's a refreshing change of perspective to try!

    Great content as per usual! I loved the Deck on ElderDragonHijinks!
    I've really wanted to make a fun copy deck like this, as it's on of my favourite things to do! How would you approach doing so for making copy of a cards like Throne of The God Pharoh? Its a card i've always wanted to build around but i need to get round the legend rule. So apart from Irenecus's Vile duplicationa and Vile Duplimancy, what else would you suggest? :)

    • @CommanderMechanic
      @CommanderMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Getting around the legendary rule is always the hardest part! I'd recommend Mirror Gallery and Mirror Box too, and you can do sneaky stuff like turn Throne into a creature then copy it with Sakashima of a Thousand Faces or Spark Double!

    what’s an efficient and relatively affordable way to build a collection? most of the cards i own are either from prerelease kits or just singles that i bought to build decks intentionally.

    • @CommanderMechanic
      @CommanderMechanic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately “affordable” and “collection” aren’t in the same ballpark. Unless you want to build decks and tear them apart regularly the best thing you can do is choose 1-2 decks and focus on cards for them only

      @@CommanderMechanic oh well, i figured as much. thanks for the advice and for replying on a year-old video anyway lol. the idea of using bottom-up design to build a deck is still really interesting though. i’ve only played precons so far but i’ll give this advice a try and build my own deck with this mindset.

  • @mrTjstephens1

    This reminds me of my first EDH deck. I had a constraint of 25 dollars.
    I had a good amount of cards i built the 99 from the cards i had the legend came afterwards the deck changed as i understood EDH better and card efficiency better.
    I started with my old Tempest and masques block cards. They were largely cheap and had weird effects it was fun.
    Though I'm tempted to do this style of deck with all my piles of cards sitting around my place
