When I first watched hotd I was always on the blacks side but now looking back at the show I think I'm on the greens side. Alicent is definitely probably my favourite character in the series

Ewww no alicent is awful. I hate her I haven't read the book but just seeing her in the show I hate her. She didn't have to marry the king or seduce him she wanted to please her father dump ass

@@liafbaby7791First she didn't seduce him 2nd This was like years ago when women had not much right all that's expected is for them to obey 3rd It's not easy to say no to your FATHER. I mean he is your FATHER. Even after she followed her father's orders and married Vesris. She tried many times to make peace with rhaenyra but rhaenyra refused and just kept insulting her. Also rhaenyra is like far worse than alicent

I'm surprised at the comments or lack there of on this video (other then the trolls who like to bash anything that sounds "feminist" to them which is hilarious considering how Martin purposely shines a light on these issues in his work and has spoken many a times on the subject due to it being a reflection of our medieval times) because I really enjoyed your breakdown and analysis. I think she is a complex character, it makes it interesting when you can see how someone wasn't a bad person not in the beginning anyways but is corrupted or changed by their environment.

Making a story with a made up world, made up history, made up characters, even the the author calls it a fake history, it's hard to use that as a point of discussion for anything serious. If you want to talk about medieval history then let's talk about medieval history not this made up stuff.

The funniest thing is that there is nearly no feminists in Westeros. Rhaenyra is sexist as hell as well, and Rhaenys offers her 12 y.o. daughter to an old king and then brags about “the window in a prison”.

    Alicent is my favorite character
She is the most tragic and the least evil of them
While People keep painting her as a cercei and the most evil witch... (cannot understand why having Daemon right there)
I always saw more of a sansa if Sansa had started older and in a different enviroment
Alicent does love Rhaenyra and is the only person to spend years defending her claim until Rhaenyra proves there is nothing left to deffend
People calling her crazy after what happend to her son Aemon is both ignorant and idiotic
Rhaenyra making her children the victims and the King ignoring his sons attack in favor of his daughter does make Alicent snap... as any mother would. Not by attacking another child but by wanting to hurt Rhaenyra as she had hurt her for years
Edit: this is on the show... the book is a very different story

Alicent Hightower is stronger than I am because if 1. my husband called me by his dead wife's name after he married me at age 14 and had 4 children with me and I had taken care of his rotting body 2. Ignored our son whose EYE had been taken out by his grandson and humiliated me in public (again) with no one (even my own father) taking my side I would have committed mass murder

Beautifully written and narrated video! Alicent and Nyra's complex relationship/friendship/rivalry is so interesting. I can't wait to see more of them in season 2 AND more of your character analyses.

I feel like both sides are just unlikable. Alicent kids are rotten inside, but it is as well due to the fact that Viserys never truly loved their mother and never showed enough care to them. Rhanyera on the other hand has issue with the fact she has 3 bastard sons and I see why this would be a very big problem, since they look nothing like they should. Possibly civil war, what if her kids would go her ways and Targaryen blood would get too weakened to ride dragons (I don't know how it exactly works, but I suspect it is about that). Rhanyera had too much pride in herself, never saying once sorry to Alicent, never trying to understand her which created really big differences to the point they are scared that only one part can stay alive. Alicent got forced by family, which could have disowned her is she didn't follow the order and Rhanyera doesn't understand what it means to be forced. I'm pretty sure they could have stayed friends, Alicent would have supported Rhanyera if she would have shown herself as possibly a good ruler, which is so sad. They could both together create less sexist world, Rhanyera has the freedom she could have wanted to share with other women, Alicent wanted to get the freedom she never could. But instead we get Dance of the Dragons, war and women don't get it better as we know form Game of Thrones. Very sad.

I watched the show first and then read the books and since I watched the show first I was on the blacks side so when I read the books i was very surprised on what actually happened and now I don’t feel bad for ether side they were both doomed at the start and I don’t think ether side if things were done differently would of come out on the winning side.

I enjoyed your analyst of this character. I will admit the fantasy I enjoy is The Lord of the Rings. Having said that this video shows how to write a female character. The Rings of Power writers should have done with this with their female lead. Then maybe just maybe they would had a series that people enjoyed.

I haven’t seen the show and I know nothing about this world, but I really enjoyed your analysis! Once again I am grateful beyond words that I live in this day and age and not in a previous time when women had no rights! The story is gripping and I’m starting to think I should be watching this! The costumes are all so much more distinctive and personalized compared to ROP’s costumes. Thank you for the video!

Trapped in a cycle of abuse, Alicent is a victim who became the very thing she hated.

  • @HeatherHolt

Sad to see her do the same to her son as was done to her, the whole “we’ve sacrificed for you to be in this position of power, so be grateful” sht. And how she treats the r*pe victim to protect her son the r*pist. she’s also very jealous of Rhynera having freedoms and Alicent is stuck having to have s3x with the king while Rhynera gets to choose her s3xual partner. She’s also a bad mother compared to Rhynera who is shown to be a good mother. Rhynera might have had an affair but seemingly with only one man, strong, and of course she can’t ever admit her children are potentially bastards - what if they aren’t since their grandmother is part stark, or great aunt is… so brown hair COULD be in the genetic line. But it’s pretty obvs it’s strong lol

Alicent subconsciously hates the sexest system but also defends it the things she despises about rhanerya are things men do but get no punishment for alicent isnt a monster but she is starting to turn into one and i think rhanerya is also possibly becoming one also she defend her son when he does think far worse than rhanerya does

This analysis was weird asf. How is something that Rhaenyra’s son does Rhaenyra’s fault? Aemond was older than any of those kids and was shown bullying them on many occasions. But I guess we ignore that because it’s edgy to pick the green side. If Allicent wanting an eye for an eye is “reasonable” then I guess it would be reasonable for Aemond to die and she should sit back and let it ride. Right?

they should not have neutered alicent in the show. it makes her motivations seem very petty and CW. also the younger actress was bland af and it was a terrible handoff.

The book Alicent was comically villainous for no reason, the show has a more realistic version of the character.

Won't even entertain the emily carey comment since her critically acclaimed acting speaks for itself. As for the rest, go and read the book once again if you're in search for a 2 dimensional, cinderella-esque evil step mother caricature that's been done a thousand times over in the world of fiction. Meanwhile the rest of us with actual taste will enjoy a much more layered, complex and humane depiction of alicent, with an actual backstory and not just an unreasonable thirst for cat fighting her step-daughter.
