It's Tywin's way of showing him who's really in charge. Joffrey may be king, but the fact that Tywin can approach the king without any fear or hesitation shows that he can control Joffrey as he pleases. Not to mention that just before this, Joffrey was complaining about having to walk to the king's council, and this is way of showing that unlike Joffrey, Tywin's actually putting effort into ruling.

One thing I love about this scene is how Joffrey starts out extremely arrogant talking about how long it would take him to attend the meetings and then once Tywin is in front of him, he shrinks away and the dialogue changes to "don't you think". charles dance is obviously one hell of an actor but man jack gleeson is also a god damn powerhouse. not only holding his own in a scene with a veteran like CD but matching him i’d say. the fact that he’s an irish kid who is able to pull of a flawless RP accent, with what sounds like it could be improvised vocabulary from the (fictional) time period at around 2:30 when he pauses in weird places like just before the word “beasts” and i could be wrong but this sounds like improv / forgetting a line or something and the fact that he’s able to still pull off the delivery and make non contemporary language sound so natural, especially as a kid, is seriously so impressive. dude has some acting chops.

In this one scene, if you never watched the show, you get so much character and world building delivered so naturally. You know the relationships between characters that arent even present, like how Tywin was Hand for both Joffery and the Mad King but the two arent connected. That the Mad King was a Targaryen with the mention of the dragons and so on.
Im convinced you can show someone who had never seen the series this scene and they would have a pretty solid idea of the state of the world.

Game of Thrones has such excellent cinematography and blocking & staging that it makes the subtext rich and revelatory. The camera angles and positioning, all so well done. When Joffrey asks why the small meetings are held in the Hand's tower, we see Joffrey seated on the throne, from below the steps which naturally puts Joffrey on an elevated position, on a higher place. Then he argues that he would now have to climb the steps of the Hand's Tower all the way to his chamber to attend the meetings. Then Tywin comes closer and starts climbing the steps and that's when I love watching how the camera is placed behind Tywin as we see him climbing and as he climbs each step, the whole length or height of his figure is revealed. To heighten the dramatic effect we do not just see him walking towards the throne and climbing the steps, we also hear the sound of his footsteps, strong, firm and controlled. They could have composed some tense music for this scene but instead there is no background score because the sound of Tywin's footsteps is enough to heighten that dramatic effect which is a credit to the sound design. When Tywin is finally at the top and close to Joffrey's throne, there is something of a top shot wherein Joffrey is still seen seated on the throne and Tywin is still seen standing but the top shot creates that beautiful illusion of Joffrey looking smaller before Tywin's intimidating and authoritative presence and his tall towering figure which very interesting because even in the scene they were just talking small meetings held at the Hand's tower and Tywin offering to have Joffrey carried if he finds it troublesome to climb the steps. 😂😂😂
Great work by the GoT team to create such wonderful cinematic moments!!!!

@Anjelica Snorcket🎭 Ah but even then he doesn’t necessarily have a point to care. They’re all the across the narrow sea, presumably just born, and under the control of someone who likely may not have an interest in returning to Westeros. These stories of existing dragons in the books came more from sailors rather than spies. It’d be years before they became a actual threat anyhow and the WoTFK was still being cleaned up, if anything another claimant-usurper popping up was more of a concern.
If Joffrey was any sort of king he’d have taken initiative and collaborated with the one person (Varys) who could’ve had Dany’s dragons killed while they were still very young.

I cannot tell if it is the character of Tywin Lannister or the tremendous presence of Charles Dance that sends shivers down the spine. Each utterance delivered with equal calm and malice alike, the grin he displays as he coyly walks down the steps of the throne - he was the ultimate shot caller. If it were a cell block he always had the keys.

2:14 that line has always got me
Cause in season one Viserys explains to doreah when he was a boy he remembered that the throne room was lined with the skulls of the dragons and that the closer you got to the Iron Throne the bigger they got.
Yet Tywin says here that the dragon skull close to the throne was the " size of an apple " Now real world me always just figure it was a continuity error.
But in universe I always wondered who was telling the truth about the dragon skulls
Viserys was only a boy, while Tywin was a younger man. But they both spent time in the Red Keep and both saw the throne room with the skulls
Idk just a scene that can be seen so many ways.

Had Tyrion not murdered Tywin I do wonder how the series would have played out. We have to assume that the night king would still have killed one of the dragons and that the Battle of Winterfell would have occurred. The Sept would not have been blown up though. Tommen would have still been alive leaving Tywin in control. I have to assume a united Lannister and Tyrell army (plus the Tyrell vassal houses who were actually good fighters) would have been stronger than the Lannister army alone.

@@isaaccerna1022I see this kind of statement thrown around a lot about Tywin’s possible survival. I don’t see how him keeping around would have made Tommen’s reign any better. He was smart sure, but his only solution to virtually every problem was mass murder. Sure, the Faith Militant wouldn’t have arose, but the continued reign of terror by Proxy King Tywin wouldn’t have been any better.

    • @darrengottfried-wilson4299
      @darrengottfried-wilson4299 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Jmetclaf7053 Tywin was FAR from a one trick pony. He put Olena Tyrell, a formidable player of the game herself in her place with a simple loophole, he got Tommen onside with the gentlest of prodding knowing he was a much softer person, and he saw straight through Pycell and used that to stack the Kings council in his favor. In the books it was well mentioned that when Tywin was hand of the king under King Aerys III the realm enjoyed an unprecedented 20 years of peace and prosperity until the mad king made life so difficult for him he had no choice but to step down. Also in the books, Tywin's famous "Any man who says 'I am the king' is no true king" quote also included the line "When people bend the knee, you must raise them up once more, or no man will ever bend the knee to you again". And rather than just going straight to mass murder, Tywin will often simply send a bard to whoever was troubling him to play "Rains of Castamere" as a gentle reminder of the consequences of getting on Tywin's bad side and it was usually enough. If Tywin had remained alive the situation would have been much greater.

Tywin was right. At that moment, juvenile dragons across the sea were no threat. He was monitoring Daenerys rise thru his network of spies. And making what moves he could, but there was nothing whatsoever he could do about dragons outside of his realm. His immediate threats were where his attention and forces were focused, and as long as he was alive, he defeated, kept them at bay or undermined them successfully.
His one failing was letting his revulsion for Tyrion being a dwarf and killing his wife in being born get the better of his judgement. Tyrion was the smartest and most capable of his children, and had he respected that and given him the recognition he craved Tyrion would have been his loyal and reliable ally and the future of his line. But in hating him, and failing to acknowledge the brilliance of his defense of the King’s landing, he ended up being undone by the one decent and capable man he sired.

If Tywin lannister was put inside the body of Viserys in House of the Dragon, I'm fairly sure he would take one look at all the antics and issues in the family, and the actions of Rhaenyra and Daemon and instantly solve the dance before it ever comes.
"You have shamed the targaryen name by siring those three bastards and daring to pass them off as heirs to our family and my throne, the throne our esteemed ancestor built. If you weren't my daughter I would have you sent to the silent sisters and the bastards to the wall, but as you are, you shall publicly give up all claims of theirs to the iron throne and driftmark, while your marriage with Daemon will be annuled.
    Why?
Because you have further shamed and disgraced our name and house by marrying your uncle mere days after your husbands death, I made you heir to stop your feckless, mad, and violent uncle from being on the throne, a decision I regret every day a bit more, as all you have done since then is shame yourself, our family, me, draw our house into scandals that have almost ruined our proud legacy and proved yourself utterly unsuitable to be my heir, let alone anyone's heir.
Either you annul your marriage and I shall marry you to someone of my choosing, or you may keep Daemon but you shall do it without lands or titles and neither gods or men will make me undo my decision to strip you of your place in sucession."
