It’s actually really helpful. Exactly! My mom always told us that life is not fair as we were growing up. It is true. I was the first one in my direct family lineage to graduate from college. But I was a single mother of two young children and I was in my early thirties. Sometimes you work hard and aim one day at a time to make your dreams reality.

Group identity/group think is more part of conservative American ideals actually. Ex. Everyone MUST stand for the pledge of allegiance, everyone MUST speak English to be a “real American”, everyone MUST show undying admiration to the founding fathers even though they were flawed humans beings and owned slaves. I have noticed this over the years, 2-3 decades ago when the "woke" movement got its start, that it's all about giving power to those who can't handle the power to bring about change. As soon as a government awards "favortism" to any one group in our world there will always be animosity, resentment, and conflict.

From day one we are all different. Forcing supposed equality only brings chaos and disaster. Sooner or later, it also becomes apparent that those people who are pushing such an agenda are not willing to live what they're promoting. They want to tell others what to do but they are not doing it themselves. But the biggest problem is yes, natural talent and motivation ends up being sacrificed to extreme mediocrity and inefficiency, and economic systems break down. Society breaks down due to desperation. I am 64. For example, over the years, I have applied for many jobs that I was rejected for because I just was not what was required by the employer. It's not a problem, it's normal and healthy to be able to build your business as you see fit. Choose people who will be able and willing to do what is needed I am glad for all the more fit people in this world. I did what I could as long as I could and now am mostly involved with self care and small contributions to help younger family members develop good habits. Grandchildren being born, my adult children are walking with God, leading sensible lives. It took effort. God is my refuge and provider. I am grateful to have been born and raised in the USA. I am not happy at all when I see people living here who are unappreciative or misguided, and are causing unnecessary problems.

And one of the many problems with this is that people of differing races/genders/religions have far more in common on a economic level than they have in common with people of the same race/gender/religion of different economic levels. The issue is that as a white man who was born from poverty, and never got any opportunities until I put in an immense amount of work, I never experienced white privilege, and to assume that every white person does, automatically forces a wedge between the white person and the black person. As does arguing about gender and trying to force your opinions on others. If people would just learn to stay in their own lane, we could all meet in the middle on the things we have in common as opposed to focusing on what is different about us, and how those differences victimize us. Group identity/group think is more part of conservative American ideals actually. Ex. Everyone MUST stand for the pledge of allegiance, everyone MUST speak English to be a “real American”, everyone MUST show undying admiration to the founding fathers even though they were flawed humans beings and owned slaves. The whole obsession with “western civilisation” being threatened is another example of this anxiety of preserving the groups nationalist identity. Conservatives think of people as needing to be constrained with rigid behaviours/rituals or else they lose some kind of cohesion that defines them. To me this is pure group think/anti individualistic behaviour compared to democrat values of tolerance and protecting peoples individualistic self expression

I have noticed this over the years, 2-3 decades ago when the "woke" movement got its start, that it's all about giving power to those who can't handle the power to bring about change. From day one we are all different. Forcing supposed equality only brings chaos and disaster. Sooner or later, it also becomes apparent that those people who are pushing such an agenda are not willing to live what they're promoting. They want to tell others what to do but they are not doing it themselves. But the biggest problem is yes, natural talent and motivation ends up being sacrificed to extreme mediocrity and inefficiency, and economic systems break down. Society breaks down due to desperation. I am 64. For example, over the years, I have applied for many jobs that I was rejected for because I just was not what was required by the employer. It's not a problem, it's normal and healthy to be able to build your business as you see fit. Choose people who will be able and willing to do what is needed I am glad for all the more fit people in this world. I did what I could as long as I could and now am mostly involved with self care and small contributions to help younger family members develop good habits. Grandchildren being born, my adult children are walking with God, leading sensible lives. It took effort. God is my refuge and provider. I am grateful to have been born and raised in the USA. I am not happy at all when I see people living here who are unappreciative or misguided, and are causing unnecessary problems.

And one of the many problems with this is that people of differing races/genders/religions have far more in common on a economic level than they have in common with people of the same race/gender/religion of different economic levels.
The issue is that as a white man who was born from poverty, and never got any opportunities until I put in an immense amount of work, I never experienced white privilege, and to assume that every white person does, automatically forces a wedge between the white person and the black person. As does arguing about gender and trying to force your opinions on others.
If people would just learn to stay in their own lane, we could all meet in the middle on the things we have in common as opposed to focusing on what is different about us, and how those differences victimize us. Which is what the woke loves to do.

I love videos like this because the speaker is representing the worst possible interpretation of the argument and people get in the comments to say things like, "This is what professors are supposed to be!" The effect of these arguments are to give the audience a reason to completely dismiss the grievances of their fellow countrymen. And democracy requires that we work to truly understand each other. So what people should be doing is asking what grain of truth is there in (the stupidly labelled) "wokeness" we see today? Have people been unjustly treated because of their skin color? Are there daily repressions that occur? We don't threaten our country by daring to make things better.
He is so right. And we have never even reached the point of discussing the possibility that some one or group is playing us.

Victor Davis Hanson is always spot on. Google him,bsearch TH-cam 2 or 3 or 4 years ago. Listen to what he said. He was right then. Present proves past and future predicted by the past.
It's not just 'circumstance'; you're not supposed to control for one's choices.
But he can’t pin down what woke is either. What this old man is uncomfortable with is that old ways are going and he and those like him can’t accept change. Too bad they live in the same universe with those of us who see the needs of others as no inconvenience at all.

All due respect professor but you started off by saying “equality of opportunity” and ended with “equality of result”. These are NOT the same. I don’t speak for the “woke”. This is just my opinion as a father and as a teacher: It is our responsibility to create opportunities for everyone regardless the reasons for the inequalities. Given that, it is up to each individual to make the most of the opportunities in front of them.
The problem as I see it is that the current systems can and should be developed to offer more opportunities. It strikes me as lazy and unimaginative to simply say “I’m ok so therefore the status quo is good enough and any attempt to refine it, develop it or evolve is ‘woke’ and that means bad.”
People have had that mentality for a long time but unless you’re a self-centred, white heterosexual man, I’m not sure how many people look at 1950’s America as the gold standard of enlightened society.
