    Jang, thank you for being level-headed and not caving into the circle-jerk of *unreasonable* phase 2 clone hate. I think that the holes are a good compromise to promote customizability and certain design decisions for the printing- while questionable and not 100% accurate- reflect what characters would look like if loosely interpreted as a toy. I also am pretty disappointed with how the white-on-red printing came out on Fox though, and I completely understand the outrage behind that.

    Hey Jang, not sure if you know, but with Fox, in addition to the white on the chest, and the terrible opacity, the knees were also supposed to be red.
    I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world, but it’s a little crazy to me that something like this was allowed to slip through. Surely a lot of people at LEGO review stuff like this, right? It gives the impression that nobody at any step looked at the source material, which is a mindblowing concept.

    • @nanorex_designs

      That's exactly why I can't get over it. I design figures and for someone to make an error of that magnitude is incomprehensible to me. If you're actually the one who has to decide what colour each section should be on the figure, the only way I can think of to make mistakes like that is (like you said) to literally avoid looking at the source material and try to do it from memory.

    I love this set. I really support the smaller builds we have been getting lately (like the x-wing and tie fighter) but the price for this is insane. I would never spend more than $100 on this. I think the price would not be so bad if it came with two more guard troopers AND two clone pilots so you could really fill the whole thing out. Also just a small side thing I don't know why lego tiles off their troop transport decks. I think just about any kid is gonna replace those tiles with plates to fit more clones (but that is a super small nit pic)

    Actually,on the wing turrets, I don’t think there’s ever been an actual cannon version where those were manned stations. It’s just that that’s something that previous toys did and now a lot of fans who are more familiar with their old toys than the actual designs expect it.

    Fox is awful, that goes without saying, however I'm really digging this new LAAT design. The size looks more in-scale with the minifigures, and most of the angles look fantastic, overall a much improved model. Whilst I would have preferred the classic white scheme, the red and white is really striking.

  • @benchborner
    @benchborner ปีที่แล้ว +44

    The inaccuracies with the Fox are particularly frustrating because they aren’t the result of limited concept art, like Jacen’s hair color in the Ghost. I like to give LEGO as much credit as possible, and the build/ figure selection is otherwise excellent (maybe lacking a figure or two) but it’s hard to overlook inaccuracies on a character that’s had official reference material for over a decade at this point. It’s very much not the end of the world like a lot of fans want to claim, but combined with the poor printing quality, it’s really unfortunate to see with a desirable character that’s likely not going to be remade anytime soon

    As an artist, i just can't overlook the flaws of the recent clones and specially the lack of some details that some characters should have but don't. But the gunship size is quite fine. This also surprised me with the Ghost, cause that one is bigger and better detailed than the original. Also the sturdiness is there. Hopefully they do a recolor for the regular gunships later on in this scale. I'd be down for more unique versions of vehicles as this was quite a shocker they made the red one that was in the background of a few episodes. Much appreciated.

    For anyone interested you can fit 13 clones in the back with guns. You do have to work them in, and one stands up unattached but is held in place by two clones, and one sirs unattached on back but isnt able to move with back ramp up. I did this with the new clone packs. I got 5 and was able to use all 15 white clones. 2 pilots, 16 crew.
    If you have the p1 clone blister pack, id recommend using the body with yellow arms as it makes a nice lieutenant.
    Comfortable you cand fit 8-10, but if you set them right you cand fit a few more. You cand use the command station and all 5 crates from the clone pack, if you get 5, for the front cargo station. It can all fit and wont shift around.
    Going to modify the speeder since color matches gunship. Both are great sets for display and play.

    Great review as always Jang! This one definitely needs more clone troopers. Two regular clones in a troop transporter is just not enough given how many came with the AT-TE and other troop transporters LEGO has done. I also wish the stud shooters were on ratcheted turntables even if it isn’t the most accurate to the show as that would’ve improved playability a lot.

    I really like this set in terms of its build, scale, etc. My big issue with this set is that Commander Fox's printing is not particularly high-quality. I could forgive inaccuracies, but when the white on the torso starts bordering on pink, that's not ideal. The legs also felt like they needed something else too them. Either a cloth kama or dual-moulded legs to indicate the kama. I know Lego don't tend to do dual moulded legs for non-UCS Star Wars minifigs, but I feel like some of them would strongly benefit from it. The Shock Troopers and Padme, as cool as they are in this set, could also benefit from it.

    I’m very happy with the concept of this set, and disappointed with the content of it. A new gunship variant after 10 years so it stands out on the self? Wonderful! Simplifying and downsizing it a bit to more easily fit with the new trend of downsized Star Wars sets? I can get behind that? It costs the same as last year’s AT-TE and has only five minifigures? Hold on… I get it, Lego is interested in itself being a premium product. But I’ve been struggling to really care about any Lego theme this year because I don’t feel like the price hikes are scaling with the impact of inflation on other aspects of everyday life, and most certainly aren’t truly justifying spending $140 on what would have been a $100 set not even three years ago. When I bought those downscaled X-wing and Tie Fighter sets in 2021, I genuinely thought they were the start of a new era of affordable Lego Star Wars after years of ties being 60 and X-wings being 80. Now we’re right back to expensive sets, only we’re also stuck with fewer minifigures per set on top of that with some notable exceptions. Maybe Lego needs to take a backseat to other hobbies for a few years while I reevaluate how much I want to give to them.

    I land in the middle. They ought to have been integrated better but aren't a deal breaker for me.

  • @KenTails
    @KenTails ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Gunship build looks really good in the video. It seems to have a plenty of space for minifigs and cargo (I won't know how many figs you can actually fit until I get my hands on the ship), especially for the size, and that's lovely. The proportions of the ship did take a hit, but I like the size and I think it's a decent compromise.
    And the unusual dark red color scheme has grown on me--though I'm still a little concerned about the durability of the bricks in this color. Have they fully fixed the issue with it, I wonder? I do hope that LEGO releasing the two large, dark red dominant sets (this one and Ahsoka's T-6 shuttle) means the issue with brittle-ness has been fixed. (I don't really have modern dark red pieces of the last few years, and I recently had a bunch of older DR pieces fall apart on me when I reassembled an old set with the colors in it. It's still fresh in my memory)
    I'm not sure about the "color choice" for the transparent clear windshield pieces 'cause on a couple of review videos & pics I've seen so far, the lack of tint seems make it hard to see the shape & outlines of the windshields. But I'll with hold my judgement on it until I see the thing with my own eyes.
    Padme and Palpy figs look pretty nice (they got the print opacity right for Padme's torso).
    Clone helmets still have the "tiny faces" and thick mouth which I just can't ignore, and Fox's torso print is just... unfortunate. I think we should all use the feedback form on LEGO's website & (needless to say, politely) point out these blatant quality issues, as well as inaccuracies in the print design (for those who care about it).
    And I've also recently come to see the issue people are having with the attachment holes on normal Phase2 clone helmets. When you look at helmets from the front, both the one with and without the holes, the profile of the holed helmet is indeed noticeably inaccurate... personally, I can live with the inaccuracy in the shape as a necessary bad (it would indeed be great if they come up with an alternate helmet mold for normal clones that has holes where they should be, with a new visor attachment piece) in the current state of things, and the thing that bugs me more is the size & design of the visor-nose-mouth print which makes the "face" of the helmet too small & toy-ish even for a minifig, but I do at least see where they are coming from now.
    With all that said, this set's still attractive to me, and I'll be waiting for a discount in the future.
    Ty for the review Jang!

    But as soon as I saw the first official pictures of Fox, I knew that his torso wouldn't be opaque. That is my biggest complain about this set. I like Fox's Design! He looks amazing. I dont really pay to much attention to how exact the scale is compared to the source material, what interests me the most is the minifig scale : if the ship is big, them it should accomodate a lot of minifigs, period (I really hate big ship that turn out to be one seaters). You always have the most W takes on things, and even when you're disappointed in a set you're always level headed about it, I really appreciate that about you

    In Australia this is $250. The Concorde is $300.
    At best it’s worth $200 here. Pre inflation it would have been a $170 set.

    Wish there was a way to get more shock troopers for this thing at a reasonable price outside of 2nd hand figures

  • @AHYL88

    Value is a real toss up with this one; it is smaller and technically less expensive than the last one from ten years ago, but there is so many Star Wars crafts and vehicles of this price range this has to compete against. Like the Ghost, this will need a bit of a discount, if only because the other sets, like the Inquisitor Transport Scythe, AT-TE, Razor Crest and even the deeply flawed Justifier have had quite sizeable discounts. Also interesting how four of the five sets have very similar piece counts to each other too, the Ghost being the outlier of the group.
    I do like the colour scheme of this Gunship and that it's not yet another grey or white ship. More figures would've been more welcome and made it less awkward as the AT-TE has three more, even though those three more figures are battle droids. One to keep an eye on this Gunship.

    The bubble turrets in the wings have actually never been manned in the movies, its just a detail the sets have always misinterpreted

    The biggest issue I have with this set is the direct comparison to the AT-TE. That one gave you 5 minifigs- all clones, with an _accurate_ Cody, cough cough- plus 3 droids, for the same price as this. I think it's not too much to ask for at least 1-2 more Coruscant Guard, or even a pilot. Considering that the figs are such an immense draw to these sets, it'd be nice if they weren't as stingy sometimes, and this is all ignoring the issues with Fox.
    Ah well, it is a really cool set overall, it's just having to contend with the previous LAAT sets and just feels like they saw the success of the AT-TE and were like "... How much less can we give them and they'll still buy it?"

    Nice set but I’m not paying that price. Which leads me to the Cmdr. Fox print, if LEGO is going to be asking premium prices for the Star Wars line then the minifigures should be premium as well. No excuses.

    This set really needs at least two more unnamed clone troops and some small side build, like a vulture droid

    • @Howlox
      @Howlox ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Small build like a vulture droid? Bruh, a vulture droid is a 30 dollar set on its own. People get way too carried away with the little add ons that they expect to see in order to justify the price. "It's not bad, but they should have thrown in 2 extra clones, a side build, some more accessories, a light brick, another ship, 5 battle droids and Yoda. Then I'd buy it."

    I'd be curious to know why they didn't print the red on white instead of white on red for Fox's torso. I think it would've turned out better and the side profile of the fig wouldn't be so red dominated

    While it's unimportant to the build or toy quality, it's interesting to note that the Coruscant gunships were of the space-capable variant, and could be utilized in combat in a vacuum. Although not seen, they were likely heavily engaged in combat during the Battle of Coruscant.

    Hi JANG, on the print quality stuff: What is to be done? I got a Winnie the Poo set with Poo having a red torso with a yellow belly print overtop, it is not opaque enough as per usual by now.
    I mentioned this in my review of the set and customer service reached out. They asked if i wanted a new (maybe) better torso.
    And to back my review up i asked them yes send me another torso.
    The new torso is of equal non-opaque quality. I am wondering if i go to the nitpicky customer path and ask for yet another (and another and another and another) or cave in and let it be.
    Feels to me like customer service might want some customer support in telling management, print quality has to be better. But i don't like the waste in shipping time and energy and in pieces if we would all go the route of telling Lego we don't like the non-opaque prints.
    Maybe i make pictures and send an email for them to use to forward through to management.
    If more customers would we could email-bomb print management to do better.

    Fox would have looked so much better with a white torso and red arms with red printing to match the legs. It would have been less accurate but definitely would have looked better as a minifigure.
