    Excellent analyse.
    Brompton:
    1. Regular public transport commute.
    2. Fits in the trunk of a micro car, like a Smart.
    3. Can be taken on a plane as hand luggage.
    4. Frequent heavy use.
    5. Long lasting.
    Zizzo and other affordable folding bikes:
    1. Infrequent use.
    2. Fits into the trunk of regular car.
    3. Great for the camping/ RV/ mobile home.
    4. Affordable price.

      @@b.griffin317 Bromptons DO BREAK from time to time. There is this one YT channel whose content creator owns a 6-speed Brompton and he stated that he has had to replace hinge pieces and other parts. He is a dedicated folding bike commuter, but he wanted another bike to take off the wear and tear on his $2K Brompton. He got of all things, a Zizzo.

    I own a Zizzo Forte and I’m 300lbs and 6ft tall. I used some of that 4 times extra cash and upgraded part of the drivetrain, switched to trigger shifters, got quick release pedals, new bags for the handlebars and behind the seat, better grips and seat, a good bell, and now it’s damn near bulletproof. I also have about $2000 left over. I guarantee I will be ridding my Zizzo for years to come. Also, when you know how to do it, it folds extremely quickly and I can put it damn near anywhere.

      I agree on the fold in this video to me the brimstone actually seems to have more steps. I’m a zizzo owner and to me the folding is quite intuitive. I live in NYC I’ve done urban commutes and off road riding. Zizzo handled both well and I have taken it on the subway both folded and unfolded with no issues.

    Nice look at two different choices in the folding bike market. I get the feeling you are defending your Brompton. Haha
    If you don’t mind riding on 16” wheels and won’t feel guilty about spending the cash get a Brompton. The additional cost buys you a well-designed bike with higher quality components. The Brompton is smaller and a pound or two lighter.
    If you prefer the increased performance of 20” wheels and don’t mind paying for that with a slightly bigger package get a Zizzo. The cost savings will allow you to earn interest (lol) and upgrade components anytime. The Zizzo Forte that you’ve compared has a frame designed to carry up to 300 pounds, compared to Brompton’s 242. So if a stouter frame and higher payload is important again buy the Zizzo.
    Serious riders will also scrutinize gear ratios and consider the availability of parts.
    If you are the type of person who will worry about the theft or damage to an expensive bike get the Zizzo. If you honestly don’t care about pros/cons and simply want the Brompton because you think it is cool, that is reason enough_ buy a Brompton. Unless you have higher priorities for expenditures then we are back to the Zizzo. !?

    The difference in 10 seconds of folding effort is notable but in a way kind of sad. But you have the Brompton fold wired, it would take me twice that long.
    I really do appreciate the side by side look at these bikes. Plus I like the mother/daughter talent :)
    Nice job -it's a like from me

    Great video comparison. I was on the fence between the Brompton and Zizzo when looking for folding bikes and ultimately chose the Zizzo. I agree that it depends on the rider and kind of riding you intend on doing. The Zizzo Urbana works great for me because it weighs 24lbs, it packs small in the car (especially when the car is loaded with camping gear), and its great for riding off road and hike/bike trails. It climbs well and rides over roots and rocks with ease. It really is a 'fun bike' lol. I primarily use it for camping trips and riding trails - it's quite a tough little bike! The 1st couple tries at folding the Zizzo seemed a bit awkward, but after that, its pretty quick and simple. Another great reason was the price at under $400 with using a discount coupon. I loved the folding bike idea so much that I also got a Kespor Thunderbolt for road cycling. I bet the Brompton is a really nice bike, but two great folding bikes for under $1000 won my vote.

    I have owned traditional folding bikes and as of lately, I own a brompton bike. I love both folding styles. Bromptom is obviously more compact when folded but it by no means is easier to fold than the traditional folding bikes. It has to do with practice. You can fold and unfold your brompton much more easily if you are already used to it and the same goes with the other bikes. Gotta say though, I love both.

      I thought maybe the Zizzo would be a good winter bike because it has an aluminum (rustproof) frame, but so does my Strida and the fold on it is much easier. Still, you make an excellent point! If one needs a cheaper folding bike with a rustproof frame to save the Brompton from road salt, the Zizzo is a good option.

    After only one day of owning my ZiZZO I could fold/unfold it just as fast as you did the Brompton. It stays in the trunk of my sedan and I can lift it out and unfold and be riding in less than a minute. It actually has fewer actions to make it fold than the Brompton. And the price? Its not just a good price for a folding bike... Its a good price for a bicycle PERIOD. It is in the same price range as the crappy bikes from the big box stores and IMO is better quality than most of them... even with the cheaper shifter and gear sets. Its the best bike Ive ever owned. Maybe the Brompton is better... but it should be... It costs as much as a used car. 🤷

    It’s only when I see how other bikes fold that I appreciate the genius of Brompton’s design. Plus good luck getting that other bike on a bus or train. Perhaps that’s slightly unfair as it’s clearly not designed as a commuter bike…
    Brompton’s hold their value - just look at second hand prices. Plus they’re durable - plenty of people using 20+ year old ones in London. No mean feat considering the rough life many of them lead.
    Plus as a manufacturer Brompton aren’t going anywhere. You need a spare part in 5 years, you can be confident it will be available.
    The ride on those wheels takes a bit of getting used to but it’s nippy and very fast off the mark. Perfect for the city..,

    • @bromptoning
      @bromptoning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bike theft is terrible in our city too, but because the Brompton folds so small, I always take it inside with me where the thieves can't get it. Generally, people don't leave their Bromptons outside. I take my Brompton inside at work, school, restaurants, stores, the gym, dentist office, etc. I've even coat-checked my Brompton at museums and art galleries. In the rare instance that someone says I can't bring a folded Brompton into their establishment, I ask if strollers (which are significantly larger than my folded bike) are allowed. That usually settles the matter and they let me in. And Bromptons are best on trains, like having a tiny rolling suitcase with you, whereas the Zizzo is more like a full-sized suitcase that's so big it needs to go in a luggage area. And, of course, the Brompton's fold is fast and easy. Definitely a winner for commuters of all types!

    On the other hand, what about pannier bags (even small ones, but at least to flip a lock because, let's be honest, inside a supermarket we don't want to carry the bike in one hand all the time)...
    Also, space when folded, yes, but convenience? Standard folding bikes can be packed in 3 clicks, while the Brommie needs all that spinning two screws all the time... (admittedly, won't take ages nor a big effort, ok but still)...
    I'm in Italy now and there's this kind of niche infatuation for the Brompton (as an icon of "British style", although one may really not just love the long 'hump' frame), but in my past uk years, in wet weather, i did spot more than one Brommie partially or totally rusted (vs alloy...).
    And, the weird 18 inches format (not like one finds tyre spares in every shop, but again, classy niche or... just lack of practicality? :) ) and other proprietary components I guess...
    When unfolded it is still a small bike. From 20" inches upwards it gets closer to a standard bike concept.
    And about durability too - questionable as i've been using my dawes jack (english version of the dahon roo, a classic) for 12 years now (commuting etc.) and doesnt fail.
    Can't say about the Zizzo in particular but there are similar good standard folders out there for like 400 usd... at least in Europe.
    For the same price of a Brompton one may then get a proper fast folding bike and even keep up, or beat, roadies (Khs Mocha, Dahon Vector's, Terne Verge etc.)
    The video is very agreeable, I was curious about the comparison. Just saying, happy to change my mind!
    Actually sometimes I brwose for Brompton reviews for any update, but couldnt decide to get one so far. We'll see :)

    • @bromptoning
      @bromptoning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a couple things to quickly clarify:
      1. You don't have to carry the bike. When folded, it rolls along on the easy wheels (mini wheels on the back rack).
      2. The wheels are 16", not 18". 16" is much more common, probably because of the popularity of the Brompton. Very easy to find lots of tire options for 16" wheels.
      3. When unfolded, the Brompton is as long as a standard bike. This is because of the unique 3-part fold. Bikes that just fold in half have a shorter wheelbase, even though they may have 20" tires. Thus, the Brompton rides more like a full-sized bike than most folding bikes.
      4. Rusted Bromptons - they are steel, so they can rust, but unless you're riding through salty streets (like winter in Canada), that doesn't happen. Beware that there are fake Bromptons out there that are the same shape but built with cheaper components. These could be the rusted bikes you saw.
      Anyhoo, I hope that clears a few things up!

    • @dorianblue4229
      @dorianblue4229 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @bromptoning sorry no trolling just discussing and comparing views, but i might well counter-reply to each point, your view is from North America, but from a global perspective (i was just checking around on folding bike updates and yt showed me this - it's reaching global viewers - i'm in Italy - and just sayin' for the record, myself. Happy to change views if that is the case btw)
      Then well, wheel/tire size: years ago Brommie tires were called 18" now they apparently are "16" but that's one of two etrto standards, 305 vs 349, and their 349 tires may be less common in europe, all i know is retailers recently confirmed me that only one brand, was it schwalbe, used to produce brompton tires. Not they're two, apparently... but many 16ers around have the 305 size, like the Dahon Curve D3 etc.
      But the main basic point is, you get a brilliant bike on its own, but then it's not like you can swap parts easily or fit standard parts on them. Same about hub gearings, they're common in the uk and maybe us, but not in europe and even less so in italy and elsewhere. Now you may reply that they stand the rain and require less maintenance, yes, but the time you wil need maintenance anyway, it'll be much harder to find competent staff in whole countries. I had a Sturmey Archer in Cambridge uk, they were so common there, and even so, the day that i needed it serviced, it was a struggle.
      Out of the uk, one may be even told to get a whole hub altogether.
      Saying this just cos like almost ALL other standard folding bikes have the goold old sprockets, hubs, etc. as even big city bikes. Easy as that.
      Same for the other points, (pushing the bike like a trolley? Yes and same on most folders for that too - but i was referring to leaving the bike outside shops, locked, and with panniers never unhooked even when folding it... convenience)
      Rust? i saw bromptons COMPLETELY covered in rust and i wasnt in canada, i was in the uk but in all europe when it snows we get a lot of salt on the streets.
      I see owners mentioning that on other such videos - not just me. And no, they werent copycat brommies. Yes peeps were still using them - and staining their clothes...
      I'd actually rather an alloy copycat one, if well specced. We have the A-taskbike from Cicli Casadei in Italy, have a look - it looks ok (and not just for free either - fair enough). But then it's like one may get a 16" standard folding bike (like the Dahon Curve) and have a fold as thin as 28 cm - we fit them on the upper "hat shelves" of trains.
      Then, the wheelbase - that's one good point. But when a standard 20er is sturdy and steady, that's good enough as well :)
      Sorry just saying that it's not like "omg the Brompton is fantastic and one step above the others", like most enthusiasts would have everyone believe too - not, it's still a personal choice with various limitations too for being so special. Not like you bump a wheel/hub or need spokes replaced but need to go to work so you may flip whatever folding bike wheel or even big bikes parts on it - no. You will then mostly need a special Brompton part. And even if they're so durable, they're still human...
      ...just like me :) not advertising, cheers :)

      You're right - the parts on the Zizzo are generic and cheap. But you're wrong about the Brompton - I ride a LOT and the parts are extremely high quality and do not wear out fast at all. For the first decade, I only needed to replace the chain and brake pads. After 10 years, I replaced the rims. And that's it for a bike I've ridden for tens of thousands of kilometres!

    I have a giant folding bike. Can't understand why almost all folders fold to the left, and leave the drivetrain exposed. That's one brilliant thing the brompton does, the chain is sandwicheb between the two wheels when folded. Why not fold to the right...?
    Also can't understand why the typical folder has the wheel axle nuts on the front and rear wheels meet when folded. It makes the folded bike like 2 inches wider. If the hinge was moved just a it forward or back, the axle nuts wouldn't meet.
    Thats the essence of the populatity of the Brompton. They think out and resolve all these little issues. Whereas the zizzos and giants of the world just say sod it, get the thing out the door of the factory as fast as possible :)

    Your demonstration of the bike folding is golden. I went to look at the Zizzo today, and I am glad I came across your video just before I left. I thought I knew what I was getting into. • @bromptoning
      @bromptoning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our local Brompton dealer has financing options where you can pay monthly instalments over a year or two. Maybe you have local bike shop does that too? If not, when I bought the Brompton, I did the math - how much would it cost me to drive to work? How much to take transit? And I discovered commuting by Brompton paid for itself in less than a year. Not to mention, when we travel with our Bromptons, we never have to take taxis or rent cars. The bikes really keep the vacation costs down. :D

    • @bromptoning
      @bromptoning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the question! We absolutely should have shown the bikes side-by-side, but we're new to this video-making thing and alas, we didn't. Next time! But here's the info... The Brompton and Zizzo weigh the same - about 27lbs. Folded, the Zizzo is 27" x 31" x 12.5", and the Brompton is 25.3'' x 23'' x 10.6'' -- so from those numbers you can tell that the Brompton is a much smaller package when folded. I haven't ridden a Bike Friday, but we met a couple traveling on two Bike Fridays on our first trip with our Bromptons in Cuba! Apparently, the Bike Friday ride is very comfortable, but it took them half an hour to pack the bikes in a suitcase for air travel. However, the new World Tourist model claims to be foldable in 30 seconds and looks like it folds in a similar fashion to the Zizzo. So, not as small or fast as a Brompton, but not like Bike Friday's old models which had to be partially disassembled to fit in the travel suitcase. Overall, since Bike Friday bikes are custom built, the quality should be higher than the Zizzo. Hope that helps!

      I have a Bike Friday with 20" wheels, a Chromoly frame and the thing is probably 20+ years old. No amount of upgrading a Zizzo frame will let it last that long or durably. I had a Zizzo and I encourage folks to go up to the Dahon because even that much of a step up in manufacturing is noticeable. The folks behind Zizzo are great folks, they clearly pay to upgrade their builds from Pacifica, but at the end of the day, it's a frame from the manufacturer of most cheap entry level bikes, aka Walmart bikes. If you're gonna want new components, why not get the frame to match?

You're suggesting people drop a couple hundred on standard components for a decent bike to improve a cheap entry level bike chassis. I had to take my zizzo into the mechanic constantly and adjust it constantly on my own. I got my BF used and redid all the components back to BF specs for a grand total of $1K. On a frame that my mechanic said had a number of years left. It's only been back to the shop once--after I was hit by a car. If I bought new components and kept going back to the shop, I was looking at spending close to $800 on a zizzo for just that year! it still wouldn't ride as smooth as my Bike Friday.
      Sometimes you pay more upfront to pay less for the duration. That's economically smart. Now I'm a commuter so I want a bike that can do distance and dolong daily routes. A Zizzo is just not manufactured well enough for that. In fact, no entry level bike is. They are a waste of money if you know you're buying a means of transportation.
