Duterte on US relations: 'No more military exercises' | Talk to Al Jazeera

  • It's been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.
Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
In this second part of the interview, he discusses relations with the US.
In response to why the Philippines is "pursuing a different paradigm" in its relationship with the United States, Duterte explains that his disaffection with the American leadership is related to US criticism of his war on drugs.
"Had America just followed the normal procedure of calling the attention of a country to a certain violation, that would affect the laws of humanity, it could have just followed the due process, which is normally - according to everybody - going to the United Nations, airing a grievance and demanding an investigation. It should begin in the internal body of the United Nations because we are, or the Philippines is, a member of the United Nations."
Conflicting reports about the military ties between the United States and the Philippines have also plagued the media of late. Without finality, Duterte confirms the potential cease of several long withstanding agreements between the two countries, including military exercises, the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, and even the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.
As controversy continues to follow the Philippine president, be it whilst publicly cursing US President Barack Obama, branding former Philippine president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos as "the best" the country has ever seen, or being in favour of "emergency" shortcuts to execute "democratic" decisions, only one thing seems certain: in Duterte's view, none of his decisions thus far warrant any unfavourable comparisons.
"For the life of me, I have yet to remember a thing that I did that would indicate that I have the traces of being dictatorial. From day one."

As an American (living in Texas) I like this president. He's a lot more articulate than I thought. Our media makes him seem dangerous and stupid but he's a lot more knowledgeable then they make him out to seem. He's just a regular man who loves his country. Also the reporters were really rude. you're speaking to the ruler of a nation, have some respect.

That's why media didn't understand how duterte works his surface words always be the news in headlines and makes the international caught off guard also. It always good to have a president that knows law and have wide array of experience on local government he can manipulate things on words and can make things done in good ways. Duterte is not just a true leader, but he is looking to be the hero of Philipines already. A great president dont come by often. Appreciate him with all your supports. Just look aroudn the history of other country and see how great president, can shape a better future for his nation. Don't be fooled by the US biased media, this new president is a gem! ito yung mga points na inemphasize ni pd30:

This was a good and open interview. Duterte is right in saying the PH is a sovereign country and can do business with any other country such as China & Russia. There will still be strong ties to the US because of the millions of Filipinos living here whether legally or illegally who send money home to their families. That connection will never be broken so I believe there will be some diplomatic relations between the US & PH. As far as other aspects of relations, such as military cooperation and military sales or aid, that remains to be seen. With Duterte, meeting with Chinese leaders, a better outcome could be possible regarding the island dispute. Nothing wrong with Duterte maintaining political contacts with Russia and in dealing or purchasing military hardware from them if he feels the Russian made equipment/weapons works well for the Philippines. Cost could be a consideration. I believe Rodrigo Duterte will be good for his country and hopefully does not get caught up in corruption like so many of the past Presidents. He sounds like a straight arrow guy and hopefully, he and President Trump will have a good relationship.

He needs our support all the way.. Media might be able to prepare negative issues about him that is not true..Just like the female reporter said, " People are geeting nervous". May God. It was a real interview, questions are not provoking and it was edited fairly. Thank You Al Jazeera for taking the time to interview our President. :) He has done so much to the Filipino people in a span of 100 days. He deserves to be heard. Philippine media is not emphasizing his achievements and the real story about his war on drugs. They instead chose to publish negative things to our President and misinform people.

She asked: "How would you like to be remembered as President? What would be your legacy? What would you like it to be?"
Mr. President: "I'll just say that: Rodrigo Duterte - He tried his best" * shrugs shoulders *
Now, that's something you don't hear nor see everyday nor in many years it'll passed..
