    How about a list of games from different decades, maybe that could shed a light on what has been and how it evolved in how we played today. I would like to see a list of games from before 1990, a 90s or 2000s list of games

    I’d love you to revisit this series. Just watched the solo game one and it would be cool to compare these choices from two years ago to how the rankings are today plus what might change on your list. Just a thought! Love your content!

    Draftosaurus is terrific. My top 10 would also include Barenpark, Kingdomino and Century: Golem.

    Wow... amazing that Ticket To Ride Europe was #11. I completely expected a Ticket to Ride game on one of the lists.

      Tbh a number of the games in the BGG top 10 aren't things I'd really consider family games. Patchwork and Crokinole are 2 player games, when I think of family game, I think of a game I can bring out for the family, not a 2 player game. Everdell is on the list, and imo is too complex for a family game, I wouldn't play this with a family of non-gamers. So it's the definition of what a family game is that is keeping TTR off the list.
      Imo a family game should have to play at least 4 and be something you can explain in 5 minutes without constantly having to look up the rules.

    Agree with your picks much more than the BGG list. It's as if they need to reconsider the labels.
    I recently got Clank! and my wife agreed to play. She really enjoys it but after playing 4 times we talked about who else could play. It is definitely not a game we could introduce to either visiting family, or to our kids until they are much older.
    Everdell and Wingspan the same. Beautiful looking and will grab attention, but far too long to explain and play.

      I definitely agree. Those games wouldn't hold the attention of my family

    I love Patchwork, but it's 2 players game, so I don't think it can qualify as family games. Good video guys, thx.

    Codenames is a favorite with my brother and his family. The variable player count really makes it great for gatherings. My mom is more difficult. After trying several games with her (including Wingspan) she LOVED Black Orchestra of all things. I think she was fascinated by the theme and the cooperative/open hands gameplay made it less stressful as she wasn’t making decisions on her own. It’s the first game she’s ever asked to play again.

    I would have 10 Days in USA. We live in the land down under and we have no clue where each US states are. But this game helps us learn the States and where they are and it’s sooo much fun.

    Just One

    Settlers of Catan

    Great list! I got way more out of your list because I think the criteria was more in-line with how I view family games. The BGG list has great games and I would happily play them, but several just wouldn’t go over well with my family as they’d be too advanced. lol
    My family list in no particular order:
    Hive Mind
    Survive Escape from Atlantis
    Sushi Go
    Las Vegas
    Ticket to Ride
    Kingdomino
    Roll for It
    Tsuro
    Herbaceous
    Just One
    There are so many more! Haha

    The term 'family game' is a difficult one... I look in family games for games to bring to my classroom, but these games don't always fit with this purpose. Games that I've had huge success at an elementary level: Ghost Fighting Treasure Hunters, Sequence (cat version), Sleeping Queens, and Gestures. I would definitely check out Potion Explotion and Draftosaurus!!! and, if the budget allows, Codenames pictures 😊 Will you do a Party Game top 10 soon? Or a 'light games' category? Anyone have any other suggestions for non-gaming 8-12 year old kids? Love you guys

    I just could not believe it, until BGG got to number one and popped Codenames. I feel like anyone who has ever tried playing this with non-gaming family members (think people whose go-to board game previously was 'Monopoly') can recognize its genius. 30 seconds of explanation and we are off and playing and having a blast, and unlike so many other games it just gets better and better the greater number of people involved. How BGG Community did not have this on the list is beyond me.

    I love Pandemic, but for me it is a solo game. I can’t imagine playing it truly co-op unless I was playing with someone at my “level”. But I feel that way about all co-op games.

    I mean, Ticket To Ride, 11, hell no, i feel TtREu should be 1.
    It's like the new Monopoly, in that it's an easy game to start with, but far easier to learn, and actually something to choose, and, just good, instead of crap, it should be the new standard instead of Monopoly.
    So more like Catan, but far easier and faster to learn and faster to setup.

    I played Clank! with my in-laws who never play board games and they picked it up really quickly. One of them actually won. Draw cards and do what they say sums up the rules of Clank! pretty much. Not too complicated.

    7 Wonders, Everdell, Wingspan...I think are a bit too big for this list. They hit a lot of the family game check boxes sure, but the thought of teaching these to people NOT familiar with modern strategy board games to begin with...not so much. For new "gamers" who have already played worker placement games or games like Carcassone or Catan, sure...but teaching my folks, my brother or my nieces these games...again, not so much. Great games, don't get me wrong, but for people who aren't already gamers, these should probably be left on the shelf. Take these three and compare them to any of a two dozen roll and writes or simple tile placement games like Azul or Kingdomino...games with really only one or two concepts to grasp which are PERFECT for families. There's also a dozen dexterity-based games and social deduction games that I think would be better choices to introduce to families over these. On top of all that, where are the card games? Trick taking games, set collecting card games...there are a ton of inexpensive, 2-8 player card games that would be so easy to teach to families, especially if they are already familiar with games like Hearts, Rummy, or Euchre (The Game, Hanabi, LLAMA, Clubs, Diamonds, Code 777, Linko, Cahoots, Team Play). Then there are dice-based games...what kids don't love playing die chuckers like Strike/Impact, King of Tokyo/New York, Machi Koro? I don't know, I think this list was a great opportunity to highlight some lighter weight games like these. I think Steph, Mike & Nick's list was great...but the BGG list...it just illustrates some of the problems with tagging games as being "family" when they really shouldn't be.

    • @boardgamersteph
      @boardgamersteph 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair

    • @wolflarson71
      @wolflarson71 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. Even Stone Age pushes the limit of a family game. No way grandma is playing and enjoying this game at Christmas. Some common sense needs to be used when you're relying on BGG for categories like this (and "auction" games like Five Tribes...just no).

  • @msmilder25
    @msmilder25 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't think the base Pandemic game is a good family level game...it's so brutally hard to win, I think only certain families would enjoy it. The level of strategic decisions to be made (if you actually want to win) makes it even harder for non-gamer teens to play it. When i think "family" games, I think games that are easy to get into (which Pandemic is not), games that are relatively easy to win (which Pandemic is not) and easy to set up/tear down (which is true for Pandemic). The rules are tricky and usually take a few play-throughs to "get", and on top of that, the asymmetric player abilities is another red flag. It's a fantastic intro game for people who are already gamers, but for people used to playing Apples to Apples or mass market roll & move games...Pandemic isn't anywhere close to that level. Many games of Pandemic are just acts of frustration, and are stress inducing...how are these qualities good for family games?

    • @tzgardner
      @tzgardner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'd say Pandemic is more Gateway. Family weight would be more like Forbidden Island I feel.

    Kenny G? Fireball Island? I don't think I can take you guys seriously anymore. I get that they are games you play with "your family", but comparing it to a list of general "good with any family", this feels like you didn't spend enough time curating your list.
    I love Riff Raff, but that game is VERY hard to get and thus not a great recommendation for families.
    For example, I play with my family: Compounded, For Sale, Orleans, Winner's Circle, Lost Cities, Gentes, Raptor, Targi, Innovation, and Splendor. These are not the games I would recommend as good for families in general.
    I help families buy games and the ones I would go with are (in no particular order):
    Splendor
    Azul
    Ticket to Ride (USA, but Nordic is my favorite)
    Wingspan
    Codenames
    Flash Point: Fire Rescue
    Amazeing Labyrinth or Animal Upon Animal (if the family has kids)
    Silver and Gold
    My Little Scythe
    Wingspan
    And an honorable mention in case it ever becomes easy to get: Taluva. Taluva is so easy to teach, looks GORGEOUS on a table and every family I taught it to wanted me to order them a copy immediately.
