Grateful for the way you go step by step through the whole process for those of us that kn0w absolutely nothing about this but want to do it ourselves. Your straightforward evaluations of every possible circumstance are much appreciated.
So far I only have one of the 5 up. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOXxsTZ3ptV_Pk0fFl8bNZvVqeoqBQFwe My son ran out of time, with motion detector etc. I have it over my garage door. It works great. Have seen a couple of cats, my dogs, when I am out front. And had a bee buzzing around right in front of it. It works very well. It even shows the neighbour's driveway, but only shows movement just past my own, which is very long. I highly recommend them.
Great video! I was wondering, my outside light is turned on by a switch inside the home. Would the switch always need to stay on or would I have to change out the switch for different outlet that keeps it on forever? If so, what type? Thanks!
Thanks! You would need to keep that switch on at all times. Instead of replacing the switch, it’s easier to get a switch cover. Here are two different styles: amzn.to/3sMpJmS amzn.to/3SHfURN
Unfortunately not. You can turn on the light manually, but there is a timer that turns it off automatically after a specified amount of time. They do not have a scheduling option as of yet.
Nice video! have been watching a few of your videos lately and you’ve been a huge help with my decision making process so thx for that! Question for you. The light that you swapped out I assume had a switch to turn it off and on. Do you have to have the light switched to ON always for this nest floodlight? Or did you wire it to always be on? The thing I like about my current floodlight is that I can keep the floodlight on to light my backyard then switch it back to normal motion detection pretty easily. My floodlight has its own wall switch for odd and on. If i turn the light switch off does that mean the camera doesn’t work? I’m new to this and excuse me if I don’t know what I’m talking about lol. Hope you could help clarify! I’m sure someone else might have the same question here :)
Yes, that camera is on a switch, so if you turn the switch off, the camera won’t work. But I found some light switch covers on Amazon that cover the switch so you don’t turn it off.
One of my neighbors has a floodlight separate from the camera. They also have one on the camera as well but either that is not working or the floodlight does pick up a longer distance so will pick up cars coming up the street. I have read reviews that a lot of these floodlights included with the cameras will go out so just left with a working camera.
Good to hear about your experience with cameras not being stolen. We are doing the same thing. I was going to place a battery camera with a power cord near an existing light and thought, why not replace it with a motion flood camera option. instead.
The Floodlight Cam is a great option in that case. A lot of people don’t realize, by the time you buy a weatherproof power cable, you’re almost at the same cost as the Floodlight Cam anyway.
Unfortunately not. You can use the “flip the image 180” option & somewhat get it mounted under an eve, but it’s not ideal. I really wish they would have designed it to go both ways.
That junction box was just for demonstration purposes. It wasn’t permanent. I ended up permanently installing the camera much higher on a different junction box. It was too high for video purposes.
Google does not market that camera to be 100% rain proof. Their weather ratings don’t work that way. HOWEVER, the exact camera in this video has been installed for over a year now (in that same spot), going through all 4 seasons (& several rain storms) & it’s still 100% fine.
thanks for this! Waiting on your review video before I buy this or not....am I correct that there is no way to turn off notifications for just familiar faces?
Loved the video. I would like some clarification on how this light is controlled. You mentioned in a previous comment that the light requires constant power. (I hope in future models, they may give you two wire coming from the fixture. One for constant power to the camera, and one for the light.) My question is how is the light controlled? Is it strictly by motion? Is it a photocell? Both? Can you turn it on remotely by the app? I would love more information about how this light can turn on and off.
Actually just happened to me this morning installing one for a customer of mine. I used a good ol’ fashion Nest screw driver to finally get it loose. Lol
@@GeorgeLangabeer So I finially found a screwdriver that worked. What is your feelings on leaving the light on all night? I use mine on my back porch, I live ina remote area, I love the light it puts out. But am not sure if it can handle being left on for hours, or will it get too hot? Thanks!
That screw can be intense! Lol. Glad you got it loose. Google hasn’t said anything about leaving the light on constantly & I haven’t had anyone use it like that. So I can’t truly speak to a potential heat issue. But another concern would be shortening the life span of the lights (since you can’t replace them). Google says they will last up to 10 years with normal use, but I’m not sure I buy that. So you might consider that before leaving them on all night.
What if you don't have an exterior light to tie into? My garage doesn't have a light that I can just easily re-wire my floodligiht into. How do I install it?
You have the option of manually turning the camera off in the app and manually turning on the light in the app, so I guess you could. I’m not sure why you would buy a floodlight camera though & not use the camera?
Is there an optimal height for a better camera view and lighting in a backyard? Some spotlights are at the roof's peak, which seems like it might be too high. Thanks
It doesn’t. As I said in the video, normally you’d have the camera mounted higher, to prevent that from happening. Where I mounted it was the only spot I had available to do the demonstration. I’m really not sure why Nest designed it the way they did. It’s not ideal. They try to make up for it by saying they will replace it for free if it’s stolen. That’s nice of them & all, but it seems like it would have been easy for them to permanently attach the camera to the floodlight.
@@GeorgeLangabeer oh okay. This is what I need. ‘Cause the light fixture I have that’s powered by a switch’s half burnt out. So I’m gonna replace with this nest floodlight cam & will make sure tht switch stays on!! Thank u!!!!

Hi, you have provided some great feedback to me in the past, so I hope you can help with this Google Cam w Floodlight issue. I installed my Nest Cam with Floodlight a few years ago. It is hard wired through standard powered light over garage. I have an issue where the floodlight will not shut off all day, regardless of the setting. The camera works fine. I have reset the breaker and chatted with Google Support, and they say it has to be replaced as all other troubleshooting has been exhausted. Any experience with this? Ideas other than just replacing? TIA
@@GeorgeLangabeer Thanks for the quick response. It might have been user error along with support not troubleshooting correctly. Appears that the Floodlight was set to on. Nice video. I gotta say, though, floodlights should be pointed pretty much directly towards the ground. You’re currently pointing them at your neighbors (I’m guessing). Lights pointed at the ground will still illuminate what you need illuminated.
In the situation here, the demo house backs to a golf course & the backyard is surrounded by trees. When it comes to security cameras you want as much of the approach to the house as possible, especially when you back up to a dark public area (like said golf course). You want to be proactive & see the person/thief approaching as soon as possible. So I disagree, lights pointed at the ground would not help in this case.
I installed this today. I have a Nest Subscription which allows me to download clips from events. This nest Cam made me use Google Home to install it.
