Kenny Lauderdale introduced me to this after I finished watching all of Kill la Kill. Saki Asamiya served as another basis for Ryuji Matoi. I didn’t want to believe it but after seeing Kenny show the comparisons, I actually believe it now despite them being different.
America: Demands women cover up, so women start shortening their skirts inch by inch.
Japan: Demands teenage girls show lots of leg, so women cover it all up.
Edit: Between Saki's character design and her motivation being her, er, wronged best friend this is like Utena as a crime drama instead of a deconstructive shoujo.
Yep, both countries (and many more) got one thing they gotta work on: women's choice on what *she* wants to wear. Otherwise you'll see one end of the pendulum to the other.
When I was like 5 I found this show at a blockbuster and I became obsessed with it, I would rewatch the same vhs over and over again! Tried learning yo-yo attacks and everything 😂 the nostalgia of finding this 🥲
Now that i'm watching the live action series, I was really disturbed on how they handled Junko's death in the OVA.
Since I didn't read the manga I was more than certain it was anime original material and I thought it was incredibly clumsy and unerving.
The OVA purposfully made Junko's death more similar to a real horrible famous case in Japan, the 'JUNKO Furuta's murder'which happened around the time the OVA was made.
I knew it was a thing that happend and the prison scheme/Sanpei humorous tone didn't fly with and really hit my appreciation for the OVA which I thought was outright unrespectful toward the victim.
But now I want to give the OVA a second chance, I did love the evil sisters and how they were portrayed.
I've been looking for this anime for ages!! saw it when I was a youngling and couldn't remember the name... but i did remember the yo yo and the girl battles glad I found it again! I'll have to rewarch it
Good review. Your style reminds me of JesuOtaku's old reviews, which have always been my fav.
I like the English Dub of this. The main girl is played by the same woman as Pandy from Dead Leaves and she just screams like a fuckin' maniac in all her fight scenes. Its great.

This became a 3 season Tokusatsu in the 1980s
This anime really made me think my Yomega was a classified deadly weapon. 😂
Can't believe how long it took me to watch this particular vid--and I'd previously been reading a fic called "A Scary Thought" where Saki's a prominent supporting character...especially when she finds how out-of-her-depth she is, considering the overall fic's a Ranma/Sailor Moon AU crossover with other franchises popping in and out.
Shame this barely came out in the States, I would have loved this...

Kenny Lauderdale has multiple videos on this franchise-which is where I first found out about it. Too bad the English dub/ subs are...far from ideal.

the 2 1987/1988 toei live action films spun off from the tv series did get released by media blasters/tokyo shock in 2007 on dvd.

@@Hama54k1 Thanks. That helps a bunch. Funny, but I didn't recognize the first clip as Tenchi. Is it from the TV series or one of the movies? I haven't seen anything but the OVA's since they aired the TV series and a couple of movies on the Cartoon Network ages ago.

This show was well made for what it is and it is lots of fun - if you can ignore the painter girl getting such a horrific treatment. That just killed all the fun for me, and I really wanted to like it, heard good things about it. But they overdid every aspect of the show, so this too had to be larger than life. Yikes!
