How rare. A guitarist willing to actually listen to the piece he intends to play combined with the ability and talent to play it. Great combination, outstanding work. Not a copy, not a butchery.
Very nice job. Excellent guitar tone and execution of guitar song. Eric's own insertion moving into the end of the song was very nicely played and tone and effect subtly applied. This is my first listen to Eric and I liked it just fine. I am a DIE-HARD Hendrix fanatic who got my first album (Are You Experienced?) when it first hit the American market. I do not criticize those that play his songs in any rendition, shape, or form. No matter how many differently styled, incredible guitarists are out there now (all deserving credit for their fine gifted skills), Jimi will always rule as tops to me. I myself have performed some of his songs with great skill and surprise to the audience but will always remain reverent to the "Original". Every good boy deserves favour. Everybody out there, please keep playing Jimi's music and do your best. You all deserve a GREAT BIG HAND! Footnote: all must understand, even those who criticize (mostly persons whose parents may not even have born before Hendrix died) should have a right to their say even if they have no idea what they're talking about. Those of us that know, know. Peace to all.
Never heard of this guy, but I'm very glad I stumbled upon this. What a wonderful interpretation of a Hendrix classic... Gonna check more of his stuff out...

Particularly the lead starting at 1:42, he meticulously replicates with technique and the volume knob what Jimi recorded and then played backwards for the final recording...wicked! I also got to meet him at the HOB in Myrtle Beach about 12-13 years ago and he was very friendly and down to earth. We talked a while, took some pictures, and he signed my original Tones LP among other things that I now display with the memorabilia in my music room. He even sent me a couple of his guitar picks in the mail a couple of weeks later! One of my favorite musicians...
Is he still around
He is still touring. Go and check him out!! He is still amazing!!!!!
What an amazing cover! He channeled Hendrix on this for sure!
Sublime! No tribute was ever more worthy!
I think its amazing how he play the reversed guitar solo without an effect
his performance is very clean and precious
After all it's Eric Johnson!
EJ never ceases to amaze...what cracks me up is when people say he doesn't play with feeling!...he plays with incredible depth of feeling...and precision...and impeccable technique...and humility....and tone like no other...my personal favorite overall guitarist!
Listen to Hendrix are you experienced live winterland great performance
Eric Johnson plays hendrix songs so beautifully
Agreed.
There is no way he could pull this solo off without feeling.
Eric Johnsons guitar tone is a masterpiece of art in its own right
Eric is amazing on his guitar!! No one like him..... Master Eric All my respect to you
Eric Johnson is a BEAST. One of my alltime favorites.
He sounds fantastic!!! Eric is a Master of the Stratocaster and makes this his very own!! I love the solo !!! Amazing sound and technique!!!!
Peace to all.
amen brother, Jimi opened the sonic door and all power to those who walk through it. I love Erics stuff, his tone is fabulous!
"I myself have perfromed some of his songs with great skill"
By your own admission, mmmm, niiiiice!
Never heard of this guy, but I'm very glad I stumbled upon this. What a wonderful interpretation of a Hendrix classic... Gonna check more of his stuff out...
His rendition is just awesome. Particularly the lead starting at 1:42, he meticulously replicates with technique and the volume knob what Jimi recorded and then played backwards for the final recording...wicked! PS> for those 'haters and negatives' who don't perform like this in public for REAL (front as guitarist, singer, writer),.. you don't know shit about 'soul' etc in this realm. "Namaste"
Man his chord voicings are unbelievable, not to mention his nailing of the solo!
Yeah those EJ chords were a nice extra personal touch that made it even nicer and varying.
In these days I was thinking about a lot of things that happened to me in my life and I thought: it’s a matter of. .experience.
So, I wanted to listen to "are you experienced" by Hendrix but I came across this version of Eric Johson.... really very nice! Congratulations Eric!
wow, this is my fav Jimi track of all time. But I didn't think this song was even physically possible to play live. I have no idea how he did that, but he hit every note spot on for the backwards solo. Unbelievable. How have I never seen this before.
I come back to this often
One of the best melodic electric players today. Thank God for Eric!
All right, I'll just go lay down and recover from this! Damn, he seriously played the whole thing!
And I love that big riff from 0:06 to 6:16 :-)
This is a great Jimi's song with an incredible feeling for me..here there is a young Eric Johnson...great tribute to Jimi and great version!
@Jaiaucus Jaiiaici - Excuse me...believe me, at 34 years old you are still young...now, if I’m not mistaken he is about 68.. if I could go back to that age...(I mean to be thirty)
This guy does just pure justice to the song. Johnson is an artisan on the guitar extracting music and life out of strings just like Hendrix did.
The last 3 minutes of those sweet sounds I envision Bill and Ted's destiny fulfilled. Be excellent to each other.
Saw him do this at the Hendrix Tribute show here in Chicago!! He killed this and May this be Love!!
Very good tribute to my old friend Hendrix.
How the Hell did i miss Eric Johnson, Somebody Shoot Me.... Thank You for Posting
I've had the privilege of seeing Eric Johnson 5 times, and met him a few times. Just saw him last month. Easily one of the 3 best guitarists I have ever seen and I've seen most of them. This may not be the best representations of how he gets into his music, but he sure does. Being an advanced musician myself, I feel like while I'm enjoying him play, I'm also learning. I also know he was a friend of SRV and has the utmost respect for him and Hendrix. Keep it going EJ!
Wow! That was great! Eric did Jimi proud!!
Good lord. My eyes are popping out. This is awesome.
Early Eric Johnson. Delightful player.
All 3 of you guys are galactic honestly.
ive never heard anyone cover that song...that was fn beautiful eric...as u always r...love ur star
Totally awesome guitar solo! Man I can't hardly believe my ears.
Guy is amazing. This is NOT a song that many have nailed with so many of the original studio vibes that johnson just pulled off. Incredible!
The sweetest guitarist I've ever known, are happily surrounded by their amps.
WOW, he studied Jimi. I admire guitarists who can play slow and I like Eric playing slow, too. Great stuff. A master
Happy Birthday EJ. I cant believe your 64 now. Your still killing it!
Just stumbled upon this guy and his music. Awesome guitar player!
Wow!!! Best Cover Ever!!!!
Beautiful and amazing!
I can watch and listen to this over and over
Never would have thought anybody could approach this song live; he does a great job!!
Awesome Feedback control, nice version.
Great performance. One of very few that can play Hendrix songs.
