I remember the feeling when I first reached the top in Alpe d‘huez with my father. That was amazing, there are little other moments in my life that come close to that!
Agreed. Ollie was a rubbish replacement for Matt. He made GCN videos so much more enjoyable, whilst now they just seem so obviously scripted and are very unfunny.
This is by far the my favorite of the epic climbs series. Mostly because of the humor and comraderie we see between Matt and Tom. The ending is the best, comparing the times of the past winners and that of Matt and Tom. Absolutely the BEST!
This has to be one of the most well packaged video GCN has produced... the elements of the nature... fun... music... love of cycling ... alpe d huez... this is one of the most epic one... you can go as many time as you want to... timeless piece... chapeau!!!
I love climbing this mountain , but it's the first mile of it that hurts the most after that it's find a rhythm and stick to it , descending is a different matter , arm pump all the way on open roads
Climbed Alpes d'Huez three times in 1997, 1998 and 1999. My best time was in 1998 in 1:29.55. Enjoyed all of the cycling vacancies in the France alps. I did a lot of the legendary climbs there. Telegraph, Galibier, Madeleine, Grand Cucheron, Croix de Fer, Iseran, Cenis, Agnel, Izoard, Allos, Cayolle, Vars, Larche, Bonette and also the mighty Mont Ventoux. Wish I could do this again.
I did this as part of the Marmotte Gran Fondo. I hit the bottom of the Alpe after about 150km of cycling including Galibier and Telegraphe. Before the race I'd done zero training except for the Dragon ride in Wales. I told myself 'whatever happens do NOT stop on the Alpe". Despite seriously painful hot foot I got up it without blowing up and in respectable time. Such a great day out. Beer never tasted so good!
Most mere mortals could never do this in an hour - that's something like 4W/Kg for 60mins, definitely not what your average cyclist could manage! Took me 1hr 27 last summer. Got a benchmark to beat next time. Fantastic mountain though and a truly epic climb.
Godwin Austen Then you should look on what you eat, drink and how much you sleep. Just riding pretty hard sometimes without any structure training is enough for 4W/kg FTP. My 56 old dad can do 4.2W/kg for 20 mins. I’d say it’s the same as running 5km in 20 mins. Again, basic fitness.
I did this climb on oct 15 and it was glorious ! The beginning was much harder than the rest of it... I had ZERO traffic for my descent ... My planned ride on the 14th was pouring rain, so I did the climb the next morning after we checked out of our fantastic B&B "21 bends" run by some UK folks
I did this little hill a few days ago in boiling hot temperatures. It was rather enjoyable. Sitting at the top waiting for the Mrs to finish and some guy comes whizzing up with just one leg. He's a fluffing legend!
I did it last week in 56 to the finish in the town and 1:04 to the tour de france official finish. Just enjoyed it and didn't race though, definitly going back to set a proper time.
Love this climb and the video is perfect... fantastic effort by Matt and Tom... I might have seen this quite a few times :) ... but still as good as watching first time...
Really enjoy the GCN videos theres always lots of good advice and something to make you chuckle, could you do a top ten post-ride recovery if it's not been done already? Foam rollers for muscles, shakes, active recovery on the bike etc. would defo help, thanks fellas.
I did it in a little under 38 minutes, failed to beat Pantani's time but I had a small electric motor concealed on my bike giving me about 180 watts of boost :-).
Love your channel and vids..my first day with you guys, but not a single mention of LA? But you mention Marco...and you know Hinault never fractured a rule here and there? Hmmm...In his 7 TDF wins, everyone else was doped up - let them play. Love your stuff - inspired to tide again after 3 years off!
Did they mention anywhere how long the climb was? Didn't see it anywhere... even going back... I could look it up elsewhere of course but feels like something worth mentioning... =S
I almost broke my wrist descending on a similar mountain road, in the rain. Front tire started wobbling, the bike drifted in the corner and....well yeah
Not to be too pedantic, but Pantani didn't win on Alpe D'Huez in 1998 en route to winning the Tour, because it wasn't on the route that year. He won the stage to Les Deux Alps after he attacked on the Gallibier. Deux Alps is like "Alpe D'Huez Lite". Pantani won on Alpe D'Huez in 1995 and 1997
Epic indeed! And funny to see how many times you climbed it for this video or did you guys changed several times throughout the climb ? 😂🤣🤣🤔 well I doubt you’d managed to change the weather 😉 great & funny video as always 👍🏼
hi! wonderful video, thoroughly enjoyed it! can you please give more detail on how you actually shot it? i'm planning to film the climbs near where i live.
Awww, man! I SO wish I watched this video before I rode up last week on July 21. It would have made SO much difference with my performance. Wait a sec. No, it wouldn't have! I STILL would have been staring 5 to 10 feet in front of me for over an hour. The highlights of ascending Alpe d'Huez the days preceeding the Tour de France arrival are all the fans lining the roadway already who come out and cheer you on like you are a pro rider. Didn't matter that it was raining, they cheered me on, especially at Dutch corner. ALLEZ ALLEZ!
Due to ride Alpe D'Huez in 7 weeks time. Big training on going and just can't wait to smash such an iconic climb where so many famous riders have triumphed and failed #justcan'twait
hi, did it this summer in 57'06 which is OK but not really fast ,but during the descent it cost me m'y front tire who melted on the side because of the braking. I changed it and the next day it occured again.
MrJay7777 you are wrong MrJay. They are illegal in road racing because they are dangerous in mass crashes(sharp discs cutting people up), they WERE used. If they were legal they WOULD use them. for long downhill sections especially in the rain they would help a lot. Also there are modern carbon rims that are more aero and have lower rolling resistance(with a higher diameter tire, like 27,28) that only work for disc brakes
I remember the feeling when I first reached the top in Alpe d‘huez with my father. That was amazing, there are little other moments in my life that come close to that!
Naww awesome Max!
The best days of GCN with Matt Stephens.........legend
Agreed. Ollie was a rubbish replacement for Matt. He made GCN videos so much more enjoyable, whilst now they just seem so obviously scripted and are very unfunny.
And still the best days 4 years later to be fair..Matt was brilliant
This is by far the my favorite of the epic climbs series. Mostly because of the humor and comraderie we see between Matt and Tom. The ending is the best, comparing the times of the past winners and that of Matt and Tom. Absolutely the BEST!
Diana Theriault cough...1h+=slacking a bit...cough :)
GCN is literally the best cycling channel on TH-cam.
*was
Agreed. 👍🏻
This has to be one of the most well packaged video GCN has produced... the elements of the nature... fun... music... love of cycling ... alpe d huez... this is one of the most epic one... you can go as many time as you want to... timeless piece... chapeau!!!
Thanks Rahul!
True!
Love all the GCN vids...after taking a 25 year break from riding and now getting back into it these are great motivators. Keep em coming!
The same here! Just wish I didn't take the 25 year break though 😅
My favorite climb of the Tour, whether doped or otherwise.
💯
I love climbing this mountain , but it's the first mile of it that hurts the most after that it's find a rhythm and stick to it , descending is a different matter , arm pump all the way on open roads

This video brings back really wonderful memories of that ride, in spite of the pain, no oxygen, and plenty of rain and lightning.
I love seeing Pantani's 37 minute time, dope made cycling so much fun to watch.
holy smokes 37mins. what
@@Papercleeep ya but he was on coke so he could fly ofcouse
That's why I love cycling
@@fadbamsendk He was on Red Bull.....Gives you Wings
Pantani the best 💪

How to psyche out your partner, keep talking as you climb.
Did it in 59:30 last year, going up again tomorrow!
Most mere mortals could never do this in an hour - that's something like 4W/Kg for 60mins, definitely not what your average cyclist could manage! Took me 1hr 27 last summer. Got a benchmark to beat next time. Fantastic mountain though and a truly epic climb.
4W/kg is like just 3-4 months riding. Basic fitness.
Лёха Белочкин it’s definitely not
Godwin Austen

Лёха Белочкин there has to be some genetic trait there. 4W/kg is difficult for most people
Way under an hour and I am mere mortal, no doping
I wish i could ride there at least once, it's beautiful!
It's my dream to climb the great mountains like the Alpe D'Huez one day, cannot wait for the rest in this series!
How is your dream coming along? Have you done it yet?
I did this climb on oct 15 and it was glorious !
The beginning was much harder than the rest of it... I had ZERO traffic for my descent ...
My planned ride on the 14th was pouring rain, so I did the climb the next morning after we checked out of our fantastic B&B "21 bends" run by some UK folks
I did a ski season In ADH and this video doesn't do justice to how steep the 21 bends are, incredible to see these guys making it look relatively easy
Give yourselves a holiday and get over to Northern Thailand and try out Doi Inthanon for a climb, love to see you guys going up there.
Ridden the normal way up Alpe d’Huez 16 times now. Still getting a bit quicker with fastest time of 63 minutes last year. Never get tired of it.
I did this little hill a few days ago in boiling hot temperatures. It was rather enjoyable. Sitting at the top waiting for the Mrs to finish and some guy comes whizzing up with just one leg. He's a fluffing legend!
4:45 the best Pantini impression I’ve ever seen.
I need to go back and ride this again!
Love this vid. Back in the days, drinking beet during the tour was normal, they said it made you faster lol.
Remarkably similar to Flagstaff Mtn in Boulder Colorado which is the toughest climb I've ever done. I rode it a 42x23 which was a granny gear in 1999.
I can't wait to get better at climbing, this is definitley on my bucket list!
Thank you from those of us that have never experienced this legendary climb!
Awesome video and all the explanation! Simply the best!
I really enjoyed that, gives you a really good idea of what it would be like to ride. Love Matts impersonation of Marco Pantani, hilarious.
Did it this August, thought it would be harder, but it’s just beautiful to climb this legendary mountain :)
I thought it was hilarious when during the flashback to Pantani 4:45 and 6:05 they showed an aged clips of Matt. So funny!!!
Matt as Marco Pantani HAHAHAHAHA
I did it last week in 56 to the finish in the town and 1:04 to the tour de france official finish. Just enjoyed it and didn't race though, definitly going back to set a proper time.
You boyos should come on over to Colorado and do Pikes Peak. 10% all the way up...BAM
Of course he would get you at the top Matt you had to drop all the knowledge. Respect.
Love this climb and the video is perfect... fantastic effort by Matt and Tom... I might have seen this quite a few times :) ... but still as good as watching first time...
Love the efforts of Lasty!!!
This was brilliant, excellent...the music really added, massively. Great to watch :)
An hour of climbing! Would love to feel that one day...
Really enjoy the GCN videos theres always lots of good advice and something to make you chuckle, could you do a top ten post-ride recovery if it's not been done already? Foam rollers for muscles, shakes, active recovery on the bike etc. would defo help, thanks fellas.
Gee I would love to tackle that one day. Loved the video/soundtrack.
An absolute classic!
I have climbed Alpe D'Huez too :D and I'm only 13 years old! Took me 1:25:25 :D
I'm 13 and I did it in 01:09
I'm 11 and did it in 30:25
Do you guys have road bikes?
I did it backwards on a unicycle whilst furiously masturbating and farting the "White Album". Only took me half an hour, I reckon.
BaptiseLeGrand I can't believe that, Helter Skelter is far too difficult to fart.
this is on my bucket list
Back in June for 3rd year running. Cant wait
I did it in a little under 38 minutes, failed to beat Pantani's time but I had a small electric motor concealed on my bike giving me about 180 watts of boost :-).
You never say hello to other cyclist
I cannot imagine how strong was Pantani 37:35, 5.7 by 100pounds
Hermosa ascensión. El vídeo está bien, de lujo. El clima excelente. Será posible se traduzcan el diálogo. Gracias y Saludos.
Great ride! i want to see you guys riding on the mont ventoux
That looked incredibly painful. Good job!
NullsysGames Surely hit ''the local'' as a reward!
obrigado thanks GCN , the best people
Thank you for that, i hope i can go someday near.
Regards from México.
Going there this year with my family. My dad and I are going to conquer it
It's a dream track!😍
Nice work!. I see that you have red tires. Could you share which ties you had (and maybe why).
Incredible!
I gotta go there!
Love your channel and vids..my first day with you guys, but not a single mention of LA? But you mention Marco...and you know Hinault never fractured a rule here and there? Great video, guys!!
I wonder if any of the hairpins are named for Lance Armstrong.
Yes
The first hairpin I think.
i love this video soooo much thank you riders
Iconic climb. It´s fantastic!!
Love you guys!!
You should try the "Alto de Letras" in Colombia, a climb of 80.7 km.
I enjoy the epic climb videos that you guys do but may I suggest two in the USA? Spedifically Mt Evans and Pikes Peak ( 4300 meters).
More legendary climbs please!
love your videos. chapeau guys

queerina Alpe D Huez

hi! wonderful video, thoroughly enjoyed it!

you need to make more climbing videos in Italy
Extended director's cut when? :)
Went up on tandem during the 2016 tour. This year I’m planning on doing it on my own. I’ve been training but I’m nervous. I’m a 15 year old girl
Awww, man! I SO wish I watched this video before I rode up last week on July 21. It would have made SO much difference with my performance.

Im doing this climb tomorrow and will time myself, Pantani at 37 mins though fking hell...juiced to the eyeballs 😳
Lance Armstrong: 37' 36"
Scott Heitman, marine survey Beast!
Beer in the bottle cage - Matt the legend
Going to ride it in the weekend, let's see if I can beat Matt and Tom!
Due to ride Alpe D'Huez in 7 weeks time. Big training on going and just can't wait to smash such an iconic climb where so many famous riders have triumphed and failed #justcan'twait
How did it go?
Wonder how long it would take to ride up on a Fat Bike with 6 psi in your tires? I don't know what that is in bar....
Great effort Matt and Tom... what gearing did you use? 🚵♂️
Did Tom buy his photo on the way back down ?
Good job lads!
I rode it summer 2016 for the first time at 13 I did it in 1 hour 45 with at least 10 stops
I'd say that's pretty good for 13. Have you been there again? If so, what was your time?
You should continue doing epic climbs movies!
Matt is the greatest , no beared, retired , kind of succesful cyclist ever.
Taking my son next year, a father son bonding holiday.
hi,
did it this summer in 57'06 which is OK but not really fast ,but during the descent it cost me m'y front tire who melted on the side because of the braking. I changed it and the next day it occured again.
disc brakes mate
Goriaas pros don't need them
MrJay7777 don't need them and looks like a mountain bike

Top post lads, Epic.
Wish I could do this one day.
I need to take a flight out of San Francisco so I can do some real climbing up Alpe D'Huez! Nice gob GCN!
Hello, are you planning on offering GCN jerseys for sale at some point. I do like their look. Thanks for the videos.
RTPgardenguy we already do! Right here: www.santinisms.it/gcn
@1:20 what are you doing off your bike?
