We have two Acura MDX SUVs. One 2016 and one 2020, and both are running fine. The 2016 has close to 160k miles, and the 2020 is the youngest at 40k miles. I guess in a rush to release these vehicles the mistake was made. We’re watching the 2020 very closely for now to see what happens.
I’ll gladly keep my K24 and R18! They’ve both been fantastic engines and between them have going on 400,000 miles! I did have a 2001 Accord with the J30 v6 and it too was a fantastic, but I don’t want anything to do with the current Honda cars!
the wear on the crank is not that bad and no discoloring, no scratches...seem fine to a point. compair those from dead European audi vw engine, this looks great. 200/2000 over tens of millions sold... it is not that bad.
I had a '15 accord V6, bought in '18 CPO and got rid of it in '21. It needed new motor mounts at under 30k miles because the active motor mounts were failing. I had a feeling I was going to have more issues and I didn't want to hack the ECM to turn off VCM or other stuff.
Nice video Elias! Thanks for sharing the info.! I own a 2014(200k plus miles)that just started to have the eco/cylinder deactivation symptoms but otherwise no issues whatsoever. Honestly, the best vehicle my family has ever owned irregardless of the stigma associated with owning a minivan. I ordered a bypass device so that my V-6 will run on all cylinders.Hopefully that will extend it’s life! Love your CTR videos and hope to replace my rear ended/totaled FK8 with an FL5 this coming year. At the back of my mind I can’t help but wonder if in the future Honda will utilize their bulletproof 4cyl along with an electric motor assist on their future minivans, suvs, pickups etc.
My Civic Type R 4 cyl had 306hp and 315lbs of torque…that’s more HP and torque than our Honda Odyssey’s 6 cyl which was my original point. Now imagine if Honda added a 100-150hp electric motor which is more than enough to power an Odyssey,Ridgeline,or another AWD suv. Stricter fuel standards are coming and Honda already has a proven 4cyl plus the know how to blend it with an electric/hybrid motor. It’s just a matter of time…
I think this starting to spill over on the K20c1. I just had engine failure for the exact same reason. I’ve talked to a couple of other owners and they had the same problem as my FK8
That’s really odd, I’ve seen and experienced only good things with all the K series engines. The L15 1.5 liter has a few issues, but I haven’t heard of any k20 issues
Even brands with bad reliability suspicions have models or engines that are reliable. As I was researching new cars the Elantra N does seem pretty reliable. I have an accord with the suspect 1.5 turbo . I’m hopefull it runs till 200 k but we shall see .
R18 was a rock solid engine.. Everyone keeps asking why I would buy older car vs new one. I told them because the engine R18 on 8th and 9th Gen will outlast anything with a turbo. Of course I am only talking about standard car. I can't speak for si or type r since I don't own those trims. 200k miles on my R18 went from LA to lake Tahoe and everyone said my car wouldn't make it 😂 my average speed up was 80 back down it was 90. Yeah R18 is rock solid as long as you feed that bad boy it regular oil changes
Dude, I get so tired of people trying to "call out" Honda. "Oh, yeah, Toyota is always a better option. They are the most reliable brand ever." Yeah okay, Tell that to all the 2024 models having transmission and engine problems. What about them putting CVTs in the corollas? Like, c'mon man. Take the blinders off. Every brand has their faults. At least Honda is making right with everybody. I've seen 3 cases now where Toyota has refused warranty on the Corolla GR because they went above 85 mph. You guys really want to defend that? Selling a "prepped, track ready" car that voids the warranty for using it for it's purpose, also, that ends up catching on fire doing speeds below 85mph. One guy has it recorded with him driving on the interstate at normal speeds and it happened. My Passport with the J35Y6(installed idlestopper, no VCMTuner) has 283,000 miles. Stop fear mongering. Recalls happen. Mistakes happen. Even if it was all machines making the vehicles, guess what? PEOPLE BUILT THE MACHINES. I can't even count how many times in history an automaker has come out and said that metal shavings were left in the engine/trans(Kia, Honda, Toyota, Chrysler). We just need to thank the lord that the EPA hasn't completely destroyed our gas vehicles yet. I promise you though, if you don't get out there and vote for a change, it WILL happen. Us Americans need to take off our blinders and act like the 1% difference it is making in the total world pollution is worth it. We should not be suffering the make believe consequences to our wallets while countries in the Middle East burn STACKED FOOTBALL FIELDS OF TIRES down to the ground. Just google how much pollution in total a cargo ship produces. Rant over.
the video was just cutting and sanding the crank surface...not the bearing. the bearing is just pieces of thin metal with smooth surface ridding on those smoothed surface. ofc if the machine is calibrated off a tinny little then it would cause issue over long time.... still it probably last way longer than any bmw.
Engine oil analysis. $35. If the oil analysis is totally clean, follow every oil change 2 or 3 times, then yearly. If the oil analysis shows increased aluminum or iron indicating bearing or crankshaft wear, that's proof of a bad engine. Good luck at that point. I am not in favor of Honda having the bottom end of these engines rebuilt on a lift at any random dealership by random technicians. The technician is paid 2 hours labor for a 10 hour job, and nobody knows if the alleged remedy will be reliable long term. Foolish attempt to save money burning up Honda's reputation for reliability earned over the past 50 years. The only proper remediation program would have been replacing the engines with factory rebuilt units on an exchange basis. There will be a number of unhappy owners, it will all turn out badly, but time moves on, people forget, and Honda will just keep pretending like selling $60,000 cars with bad crankshafts is no big deal.
Its because the anti carb and climate change nonsense that their forced to make this faulty cars in my opinion. But this is true in California with the earth dreams engines
Bro Honda is # in hiding problems! I know. I had 2 new Hondas with major issues . Dealer and Honda corporation didn’t help! Sold both 2006 Civic and 2017 Ridge line. I’ll never buy Honda vehicles again!
It’s the production worker and quality assurance. I work in a race shop as a machinist. It’s always the machinist not checking tolerance.

They have great 4 cylinder engines. You don’t have to get a turbo.
I have a J35Y1 so hopefully that isn't affected. Turned off the VCM via VCMTuner II, though.

No they use the 3.5 liter V6 for their larger SUVs and Ridgelines. 4 cylinder engines aren’t powerful enough.

Actually most Honda cranks are forged.
If it rings like a bell, it’s forged.
Is this the same engine that will be in the new Passport?

5:05 that’s definitely not crankwalk. Engine would either be knocking ridiculously at idle or not even run at all due to worn thrust bearing.
hyundai/kia definitely had an issue with fires
