NEW Mercedes-Benz Engine: CAMTRONIC System

  • CAMTRONIC is an innovative engine management system that reduces an engine's CO2emissions. It optimizes fuel consumption in the engine's frequently used lower partial load range by reducing losses relating to load change behavior. Mercedes-Benz equips its 1.6-liter variant of the M270 four-cylinder gasoline engine with the intake valve lift adjustment amongst others. The system operates mechanically, but is served by an electronically controlled actuator. The intake camshaft is made up of several components: two hollowed-drilled sub- shafts of equal size are mounted on the carrier shaft. The first sub shaft controls the intake valves of cylinders 1 and 2, and the second those of cylinders 3 and 4. The cams themselves take the form of a double-cam with two curved surfaces. The surface operating the valves via roller-type rocker arms is only half as wide as on a conventional cam, therefore the space requirement is the same. When the steeper half of the cam is active, the valve lift is increased and the valves remain open for longer. Switching to the flatter half of the cam shortens the valve lift and the valves close sooner.

    This has a big disadvantage. Intake valve need to be early open and close later in high speed. But this design , when Valve open early , close early too. Toyota VVTi also has the same problem. But Honda V tec is the winner

    They keep saying "supercharging via the turbocharger." Is that a centrifugal supercharger or a turbocharger?

    • @soraaoixxthebluesky
      @soraaoixxthebluesky 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blarganthia 1) Turbo-charger or Turbo-supercharger is a device consist of turbine and compressor wheel to boost the engine with a compressed air
      2) Supercharger or Mechanical supercharger is device consist of a compressor wheel or a rotary vanes driven by belt taking power directly from crankshaft in form of kinetic energy acting as an air compressor.

      This is the same principle Honda used back in 1990. It’s basically VTEC, or Toyotas VVTL-i or Mitsubishi’s MiVEC or Nissans VVEL. Japan has had this tech years ago nothing new.

    Is this Valvetronic?

    • @sasajungic89
      @sasajungic89 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not really. BMWs system was fully variable where this is just two step. Toyota has a similar system to Valvetronic. It’s called Valvematic.

    BMW Valvetronic is more advanced. They are variable valve lift, not 2 steps only
    And implemented more than 10 years

    Europe prefer underground engines with petrol engines 1-4 turbo intercooler all because they are street racers who fall a parts to build.
    They never care what customers want in automobile market.
    That why Europe fail economic in AE.

      Joshua Henry I agree I was sitting here thinking about all the effort, research, money, time spent on all the engine technologies when not only are diesels more efficient and practical for 98% of drivers (power wise anyway) if all this money effort and time ect. was spent on an electric power-train where would we be???

    • @thevinceberry
      @thevinceberry 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shannon Suber I think if we all use diesel engine, the fuel will be too expensive, gasoline is a good way to cheapen our energy price. Higher demand, higher price.
