    John from Fargo is a hero!! His math is correct. If he contributes $7,600 over his 11mos of debt payoff, employer matches $28,500 (15% of 190,000), that's ~$36,100 invested @ age 30. At age 65 with a 10% rate of return (RAMSEY'S PREFERRED RETURN), that would be ~$978,000. The downside? Adding ONE MONTH of debt payoff (I actually calculated 2-3 mos, but I trust his math over my quick math). I'd take that trade off any day!

    • @mffl2023

    The baby steps aren’t the 10 commandments, there’s always exceptions. But don’t expect to call in and get them to deter from their company stance.

    • @jameshowlett3921
      @jameshowlett3921 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Yep, but they have to appeal to the average american who is in debt up to their ears and don't know anything about their personal finances. So they have to send one message and keep it simple. Anyone who is doing fine with their finances doesn't necessarily have to follow all the advice offered.

  • @robertclements4192
    @robertclements4192 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +34

    No way I'd turn down paying the 4% to my 401k to get employer match of 15% regardless of paying off the debt. I think this is an exception to the Ramsey rule.

    • @RaechelMaelstrom
      @RaechelMaelstrom 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Seriously, I absolutely am with you. It's obvious they can't run the math or even think strategically about this. Paying off an additional 4k in debt this year vs next year is really barely changing the debt paying trajectory. And the caller is right that the money the company is going to throw in is going to be worth a lot. The only way this might even out is if all 90k is payday loans or credit card debt. Between not paying taxes (+22%), and the match (+15%) that is almost a better return than having that money on a bad credit card.

      @@RaechelMaelstromDave and his Ramsey personalities can't think outside their tiny box. Other than Dave, they can't do quick math calculations (unless Jade has her investment calculator, but she only whips that out if you're out of debt), so this call was above their pay grade. They're firmly entrenched in the Ramsey way, even if it's not the best way. This guy should definitely keep the 401(k) funded, and get the match.

    37:00 when my kids were young and had money to spend, they were allowed to spend it how they wanted. I cautioned them that cheap, junky toys would probably break in a day or so, so weren't worth the money. That happened once, and my oldest son said, "Well, that must have been a junky toy." He was much wiser with his money after that. We would also figure out what he could get with the amount of money in his pocket. What would have to wait because he didn't have enough money. I also told him he needed to figure extra for taxes. He's extremely good with money as an adult. My youngest has disabilities, so has no concept of money. Different story, altogether.

    Cut up all my credit cards, per Ramsey team advice. How do I rent cars, since they require a credit card? Also, I traveled internationally and tried to rely on only a single debit card, which was a mistake, since it was declined multiple times at the hotel when checking in, despite plenty of $$ in the account. (I thought I had already paid for the stay when I set up the reservation.) l only brought $100 cash otherwise. I had to get bailed out by family in that instance, which was embarrassing. Keeping it at a zero balance in the instances it's needed for an emergency rental or out country travel be prepared to simply pay off immediately. I love the advice and agree mostly but in these instances...because I have been at that place where the rental company that allowed me to book with a debit had the overzealous employee that wasn't budging. @6:44 some rental car companies will accept debit cards, but some wont and will give you a hard time. When you're stuck in an airport its not the time to try to figure out which rental company will take a debit card.This summer I booked a rental with my debit card, they took the money off the card. I flew in and went to pick up the rental and they said they needed a credit card to put the 200 deposit for the vehicle. I didn't want that to be the place where I was stuck trying to go to each rental booth to get a car possible more expensive than how I booked online because I only had a debit card.

    I think they are wrong about not needing a credit score . The only apartments that will rent my son an apartment without a credit score is the worse part of town. Get a credit score and be responsible.

    Beth, it sucks what you've gone through with your husband, but it's just reality now. Sounds like a compulsive liar , big spender or gambler maybe? Regardless, you should have pulled your head out of the sand a long time ago. Move on and live a better life for your remaining years

    To the caller with the dad problem. Or you cut the phone or you don't answer and don't communicate even with your sister. Do you need family gatherings? I need no one. Will they hate you? So what! We came to this earth alone with nothing we go alone with nothing.

    I didn’t like when jade shamed that woman whose husband obviously beats her and said she’s at fault and a bad money manager. Usually love jades takes.

      Staying with someone who abuses you financially or otherwise is a choice. Doesn't mean you aren't being victimized and that the abuser isn't responsible, but you are complicit in your own demise.
