Dogumentary TV sits down with Boxer breed enthusiast Kathy Ochs, to talk about this amazing dog breed.
A well-made Boxer in peak condition is an awesome sight. A male can stand as high as 25 inches at the shoulder; females run smaller. Their muscles ripple beneath a short, tight-fitting coat. The dark brown eyes and wrinkled forehead give the face an alert, curious look. The coat can be fawn or brindle, with white markings. Boxers move like the athletes they are named for: smooth and graceful, with a powerful forward thrust.
Boxers are upbeat and playful. Their patience and protective nature have earned them a reputation as a great dog with children. They take the jobs of watchdog and family guardian seriously and will meet threats fearlessly. Boxers do best when exposed to a lot of people and other animals in early puppyhood.

Having owned Boxers for over forty years, the only thing that was forgot to be mentioned was their capacity to spontaneously learn to communicate their wants to you. They literally develop their own, accurate dog/human language better than any other dog. Each of my dogs quickly learned, in different ways, to convey exactly what they want, even using facial expressions which only Boxer owners will understand, how many other dogs literally smile when they're happy?

We got our first boxer a little over 13 years ago. The first six months we had her I swore I would never get another boxer. I just wasn’t prepared for such a stubborn & intelligent/mischievous puppy. After that initial six months, I swore I would never not have a boxer. She died in early December and we have since gotten to new boxer puppies. They came from two different breeders, but they bonded with each other and with us instantly. Like their big sister, they never met, these two have stolen our hearts.

A fearsome warrior with the spirit of a child. My Rocky’s coat gleams as thoroughbred. He is tiger striped dark copper and black brindle and is the most handsome dog I’ve ever seen. About 75 lbs. He will bark a bit much but he’s only 19 months and still learning. They become more noble with maturity but never lose a bit of the puppy.
His white chest marks look much as a map of the continent of Africa complete with Madagascar.
We’ve had boxers for over thirty years, Rocky is our fourth, and cropped ears were the norm but I’m so used to Rocky’s flopping long ears now I love them as is but of course his tail is cropped. My wife calls him mister wiggles as he wags his whole body with joy.

Owned two boxers and will buy another one in the next year or two. Boxy was a clown built like a tank. He was agile, fast, loved children and his family (us). I remember when we were doing a remodeling on our backyard, boxy’s fun time was to steal any tool from the workers and run all over the yard stopping from time to time to challenge the workers to try and take the tool, as soon as they got close he would again pick up the tool and start the game all over.

I had 2 boxers & a pit boxer mix my husband used to hunt wild boar.
One day they were playing in the back yard w/my 2 1/2 yr old daughter, while I hung clothes. The dogs never left her side. We had a 6' fence around the backyard w/signs along the entire fence & Front door, "BEWARE OF DOGS! " I was hanging clothes w/my back turned from my daughter while 2 men were approaching the fence 2 tell me she looked like a little Shirley Temple Doll only she had white blonde hair, big baby blue eyes & the longest eyelashes ever continued 2 mention I had a beautiful daughter who had her mommas looks. Feeling un- comfortable I said thanks & told them I was busy & they should leave. Our dogs sensed tension & my fear I'm sure. They escorted my daughter closer & stood their ground 2 guard us, never ceasing 2 growl at the 2 men. Our dogs were never trained to be guard dogs. I saw and greatly appreciated this different side of them I'd never seen. It was nice 2 kno we were safe. Especially when one climbed over the fence trying 2 woo my daughter 2 come see him. The female pit/boxer mix grabbed her shirt, pulling my daughter back. The female boxer stayed next 2 me. Before we knew it our 85# boxer had the man faced down in the ground, the other one got attacked when he tried to reach through the fence was grabbed by the arms. My female boxer who stood by me & my daughter ran to get my cell phone, police were called & those 2 men were imprisoned 4 a long time. What surprised me is my dogs NEVER had guard dog classes. It must be ingrained when loved ones are in danger. I was so proud of our 4legged family members.😊😉🐶 I so much more appreciate ALL my dog & human family members.🏜

I had a boxer who developed degenerative miopathy. It started with him dragging his left rear paw . It quickly and aggressively took his hind legs from him. Within 8 months of first noticing it we had to put him down. That was 3 years ago. I still grieve for him. He was my very best friend ever. So much love was in that boy. My life was forever changed because of him and all he gave to me. I feel blessed for having had him. Rossco was his name. He was here for 11 years.

I have an 11 month old Boxer mix puppy. She is beautiful and sweet anf loves everyone including other dogs. I am working on training her to be a service dog for me. Shr is very smart but I have 1 problem with her training....She gets so excited when shes around other people and dogs that she jumps with excitement. Any ideas on how to curb that habit? We've tried a few things and some work when she's getting the treats from the person coming in but as soon as they stop treating her she starts jumping again wanting more and the love.

Getting cuddly with a playful breed will not help. Love them but not to an extent of getting cuddly with them. Be gentle but assertive. Correct them even before they show that kind of behaviour. You can do this by reading their expressions and body language and before they even try to jump on people just start patting them in the neck part and command them to sit to calm them down. Take them to long walks twice a day if possible. I hope it will help.

Boxers are the first breed I fell in love with! We had an amazing one when I was a kid in the 80’s. She was a fantastic family dog and a typical boxer in that she was very playful and loving, but unlike some boxers of today, she took her job as watchdog and guardian very seriously. I still miss her.
Also, the bull terrier came along much later than the original boxer stock did. I think she is making up her own fantasies. Wow. Lmao I have never heard anyone say the boxer has bull terrier in it. That is some dangerous misinformation right there.

I had a Female White American Boxer who was 69lbs and lived to be the age of 12.5 years. She passed on her own with Us by her side. Aside from a few skin tags and later dementia, she lived an extremely healthy life. Raw food was the secret to the last years of her life. She never looked old or had seemed to have issues being a silly boxer. She also got a lot of exercise. I also had an AKC registered Female fawn 50 lbs who was diagnosed at the age of 7 with DM. She was in a wheelchair and lived to the age of 10. I just got a little Male puppy who is the light of my life. I couldn't imagine life without one. I do hope that we figure out how to make this breed last. The older they get the wiser they become. Thanks for doing this work!

They are very sensitive dogs. I only have one now - her buddy passed away over a year ago. He was 13 yo. She's 10 now. Delilah was 12 and the ones before didn't live as long - 6 to 9 yo. I'm my dog's dog, lol. I would protect them with my life.

Just lost my Lilly. Beautiful brindle with white chest. She had a happy wonderful life with me, I took her every where I went. Made it 13 years of age before I reluctantly had to put her down. She had become unable to use her back legs anymore. We carried on the best we could for most of a year but it all became just to painful to watch the slow degeneration. As soon as I quit working I intend to get another Boxer. Boxers are absolutely the best breed ever.

You probably know. They also have wonderful dogs just like yours. Very seldom we see people willing to breed Boxers having the kind of approach you have. I wish you success from the bottom of my heart. May God keep them away from the bigest health problem they use to have which is cancer... By the way, they are for sure, the best dogs in the planet and probably in the whole solar system! Greetings from Brazil, Mrs. Ochs.

I agree about kennel training. I worked in animal clinics for a long time working from 8-10 hrs a day, imagine if I left my pup out of her kennel to eat whatever she wanted, imagine the potential foreign bodies she could get without me knowing it...safety first!
I love Boxers with undocked tails and uncropped ears, look how happy they are with their ears and tails! 😍😍😍I wish everyone could all appreciate the beauty of them without altering the ears/tails. Humans are never satisfied and want to make everything as aesthetically pleasing to their eyes, nothing important for the animal itself.
