This is very inspirational for me! I’m a Japanese carpenter in Kyoto Japan and I am looking to start my career in Vancouver so seeing a Japanese builders doing good overseas is quite motivational for me!
Good luck! You need wealthy clients for this kind of work, like the rich Chinese in Vancouver. This is not for the IKEA pine wood do-it-yourself crowd :)
I love Japan, from childhood I was fascinated by Japanese culture, watching Japanese movies in Iran, I visited Japan finally this spring and I loved it even more, amazing country, built by very unique and superior culture and good people, best foods in the world. Loved it
I've been a somewhat successful ballet dancer, though now I find myself living in relative obscurity asking myself difficult questions. I've built the granny shack I live in with my dad, and try to achieve harmony with nature as best I can, it's difficult, especially in the sprawl of california. Watching this has made me feel so much better tonight. I can't wait to show my father this video, I'm sure he will enjoy it very much. Wabi Sabi, i've got to remember that, thanks for sharing!
Chris I have heard of this somewhere before. Wasn't this put on DVD? I gotta say though that Nature and Modern Society could get along, but Society doesn't want to put the time or money into it. This was a excellent show. I think you should do an Asia Uncensored but do it more on a whole Asia. This is definitely your calling. Keep it up!
I'm an engineer, so I have an understanding of forces....of material resistance to forces....of shape resistance to forces....but I also see as a human who feels with his soul, and I loved this video. My world is so fast there is so little time to produce high quality, I am involved in a process that delivers 'that will do', cluttered by multiple chiefs desires on what the finished product looks like. This video was truly refreshing and I loved it.

I am with this guys who think rain make things beautiful, rainy days are my favorites, nature is so much beautiful when it's wet, more calm also. It relax the eyes not to have the brightness of the sun.
This is a great show, just goes to show that TV are outdated. They would rather produce another crappy reality tv show than something beautiful like this.
Cartooniverse Thought provoking material is an absolutely critical threat to those who benefit so much from the current status quo. That's why psychedelics are illegal. It's why TV is chock full of scripted nonsense so ironically labeled as "reality" TV, it's why everything is "politicalized" these days and thought is funneled and limit into to one of two main, flawed ways of thinking. All of it is in an attempt to prevent new, outside concepts from threatening that status quo, and "we the people" are tricked into supporting it all against our own best interests. Then any time a new "grass roots" movement or idea pops up, it's either a fraudulent "astro-turf" movement, or its quashed and crushed by popular culture to prevent its success. For those who benefit so immensely from the rest of us suffering the current status quo, provoking serious through is tantamount to a kind of snowballing suicide that would get out of their control very quickly.
This show just lies to you... Did you know that almost all temples in Japan replace every single piece of timber every twenty years? That is part of the Shinto-Buddhism religion. That traditional wooden Japanese houses have no value in Japan after 20 years and have to be destroyed and rebuilt. An untreated piece of wood can last 1000 years... I’ll believe that when hell freezes over... I’ve seen companies destroy their modern building and build an exact duplicate building because it was over 20 years old. It is really wasteful, and that practice has been curbed for non-religious buildings in Japan. Yes the carpentry is nice, but there are a whole range of aesthetics of Japanese art you could go into like Wabisabi, this whole minimalist/ old ways are better crap is just utter nonsense to make a show look better without being very knowledgeable on the subjects.
🌟You will be blessed to stick to the end🌟 Speaking of history, the majority of Japanese culture originally came from the Korean peninsula. (The ancient ancestors of Korean people, that are connected to the nomatic in Central Asia, had built a civilization predating that of the Han Chinese by 2,500 years.) About 500 years ago, the Japanese invaded the Korean peninsula like the predatory Vikings, and during the chaos of the bloody war, they kidnapped for example, a significant number of pottery artisan masters... (The Japanese had to withdraw back to their islands after experiencing a heavy blow by the superior navy of Korea (then called Chosun) that built the ships WITHOUT any nails. The Japanese used nails for their ship building which is disadvantageous when firing the cannons.) The Japanese emperor who abdicated his throne to his son not too long ago, confessed that he is a descendant of an ancient royal dynasty family from the Korean peninsula. Just a few historical FACTS that the Japanese are not too excited about disclosing... Oh, here's one more Fact relevant to China Uncensored: Suring the 36-year Japanese colonial occupation of the Korean peninsula (1910~1945), the imperialistic Japanese government turned one of the royal palaces in Seoul, Korea into a zoo. Can you imagine the the Buckingham palace or the White House being treated like that?! What is even WORSE is that for decades now the predatory CCP (Chinese Communist Party) has been using the traitorous Pro-China mainstream media in Korea, exploiting this painful history for Koreans in its schemes to colonize the Korean peninsula, by weakening the Korean-Japanese partnership that is disadvantageous to the CCP's predatory schemes!!! How? By brainwashing Koreans with Pro-China propaganda, hiding/minimizing the destructive effects of the Chinese in Korean history, while enraging Korean psyche with exaggerating and or fabricating history and news reports, thus instilling deep seated anti-Japanese, Pro-China sentiment among Koreans. I'm an Pacific islander from Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 and I'm always interested and astonished in Japanese craftsmanship in carpentry and joinery.. I really loved the video 💯👍
@@jonmartindeiii962the Chinese and Korean joinery for buildings are more simple in nature. This is due to Japan being more prone to seismic activities so the joinery must be crafted so that they withstand things like frequent eartquakes. The handcrafted furnitures just uses various implemented techniques that have been passed down generations and have gotten distinct charasteristics. Think of it as Japanese animation. Even though the animation was heavily influenced and inspired by US, no one calls anime style as American.
Am I the only one who found it hypocritical that old rich people who live in a multi-million dollar apt and house want simplicity while paying for a 40k table.
+Hajime Right? The whole time I was like... You know these guys ask for an arm and a leg for their handmade furniture; Why else would only rich people be able to afford it? Everybody else gets particle board shit.
+Obi-Cat Kittenobi I think you can appreciate both. The reason the old crafts are fading is not just because of materialism but because of price (of course, and probably mostly). But at the same time as everybody can afford furniture because of IKEA, something unique is being lost. If rich people keep up the old traditions I don't see anything wrong with that. The money could be also used in a worse way (for instance to buy gold-plated faucets etc...).
These traditional brackets are called dougong (斗拱) from traditional Chinese architecture which were later exported to neighbouring Korea and Japan. Call it 'traditional Japanese carpentry' but please recognise that it originates from China during the late centuries BC
I could not have enjoyed that more! The shoot and edit style, the narration, the pace, the music... All of it blended together into a seamless, zen-like journey through Japanese joinery. I read many years ago that Japanese joiners will spend as much as a third of their time on a project caring for their tools. After watching this, I have no doubt of that. Thank you for the wonderful look at some beautiful craftsmanship.
Being a Carpenter myself this is amazing work, hats off to you guys hope that tradition never dies out. Wish i could get a chance at learning this awesome work!

Even da Vinci understood. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". The more we complicate our lives, the less living we actually do. Thank you for a beautiful video.
true, we do need simple things, its complicated in its own way but we cant see it when we are always surrounded by things that seem complicated in appearance
This is one of the greatest episodes you have on your channel and i know many other people agree with me on thinking this. There is so much skill that goes into this technic. Absolutely LOVE it.
The whole forbidden city was built without a single nail, still standing after 600 years, traditional chinese architecture has been shared to their neighbors like Korea and Japan, it's the reason why their architecture are very similar thanks to the technique of Chinese carpenters and builders.
fun fact: some western tools are "push" tools, like a regular saw or wood plane you push. japanese are "pull" tools like the japanese saw and wood plane
This was interesting but I wish it'd gone more in detail into the Japanese joinery itself rather than just interviewing a bunch of really rich americans who kinda seem to fetishise Japanese culture. Quite a few of them kept saying about how simple the joinery was which is quite the opposite of the truth, it's horribly complicated and detailed, that's precisely what makes it so long lasting and beautiful
this documentary is full of contradictions. The guy who was all about keeping with traditional craftsmanship will only source local wood, meanwhile how does that wood get taken down? chainsaws and....fork lifts, so whys it better to use handplaners instead of conventional planers? oh because you can take more time to shave off really thin slices....but when it comes time to tackle a massive fucking tree, no one's running for the hand saws....interesting.
There are a lot of contradictory points in this about the clientele, but I think the end of the understanding is that these are made by master craftsman; possibly the last of their kind, and it only will cost more as life goes on. But also, these will last you a life time, and you can pass them down from generation to generation, since they hold up in natural conditions, imagine in your home... And your kids home, and your grandchildren's home, and your great grandchildren's home.
As a man that works with wood for 15 years , I truly admire what you lot are doing. It s not carpentry its an art with full dedication to every single project 👌. Just looking on sons fingers and how he hold a chisel says perfection is a goal 😁. Keep up the good work and tradition in this sad times 👏
LOLOL you do realize you just admitted that you hate jews right? Which is perfectly normal and ok, I would just like to make sure we're all on the same page.
Seeing the master carpenter watching the old elm tree being cut down is a thing of wonder. Watching the tree being slabbed with its age and imperfections and supreme beauty and size is calling on something inside me. I am a danish carpenters apprentice and to me these craftsmen are poets.
That was Beautiful. The whole video from narrator to music and of course subject matter was just outstanding. Why can't we see more of this kind of entertainment than that of what is sent to us today. One does not have to be a craftsman to enjoy and appreciate this kind of production and it was so well made too. Thank you for all your work, everyone. This is a keeper for me to view over and over again it is that good.
Watched this many times, cannot understand any criticism. Japanese craftsmen showing skills few can emulate - using very basic tools - simply fantastic.
Absolutely love the philosophy behind this kind of carpentry, we need to learn how to cherish nature again and use nature in a radical eco-friendly manner.
It's worth every penny saved/spent, every second on the plane, and every last bit of jet lag you get when you come home. Japan was amazing. I stayed in Narita and ventured north (I went for martial arts training) to Kashiwa, then Noda-shi (NOT Noda! Two different places!). The train stop in Nodashi was Edogawadai, to be exact.
I'd still go though. Because I love their history and their culture seems cool, not to mention that their scenery looks beautiful. But I do hate the weebs, that just go because they think everyone looks like they are an anime character.
What beautiful furniture! The Japanese have long been an advanced people. Love seeing true craftsmen in their work, and the finished product is gorgeous
@@hiramcarter Yeah can people please stop going on about that! All countries have done stuff wrong in the past, we don't need to continually drag them for it.
Fantastic video ... If you travel to my small town in Northern Ontario, Canada you might see my home with a typical looking porch on the front ...BUT after closer examination you might see, all the 4X4'd and 6X6's are mortice and tenon joined with hardwood dowels! :) ... when I erected the main frame it looked liken old fashioned barn raising ... neighbours and strangers gathered as I winched it up :) ... it took MUCH longer to join .. but cost no more money ... a work of passion and patience! :)
@@gideonroos1188 honestly, yes it's expensive, but compare the amount of time, labor, and skill that goes into making that table compared to the time, labor, and skill that goes into making an equivalently sized ikea table... The property that he has to pay rent for to let that wood air dry isn't free either, so imagine paying rent on a property to just let wood sit and air dry for 5-10 years not being able to gain any income from it until it's dry. Also location wise because he's in new york which has a higher cost to live (more expensive rent), rather than someplace like say indiana or illinois where the cost of living is a lot lower (of course so are the wages in those states XD). So yes it is overpriced, but it is well understood why it costs a lot more
@@dwalters98 this sort of thing is why all the “traditional artisan skills” were usually reserved only for the wealthy. Nowadays everyone can wear jewelry or own a table, but it is made possible by these modern production techniques that sacrifice on quality to some extent. Everyone can wear jewelry, but it will be a cheap piece of glass.
@@dwalters98 just because you live in a higher rent area doesn’t mean it’s justifiable to upcharge for the same quality of work you can do anywhere. 80k for that table? it’s high quality but Is it really eighty thousand dollars of craft?
I had talked to the Japanese Master for hours.... he smiled and nodded and then replied simply.... "no speak English". Just kidding. He actually said "better no speak, better to listen"....
People like traditional Japanese architecture, not because it is Japanese, but because it attempts to be in harmony with nature. That is something that the Japanese got right, not something that they intrinsically are. People like harmony with nature, because that is an instinct, which is built into us.. and that is something the Japanese have traditionally been very good at embracing.

@@angelabby2379 I mentioned Buddhist architecture already. Noh and Kabuki are extremely different from one another, and noh didn't taken root during that time, the exact origin of Noh isn't even sure about with people having a few different schools of thoughts, one of them has part of it's origin from entertainment from China but also have the other part from native Japanese entertainment. There are thousands of the same exact wood architecture buildings surviving throughout East Asia especially in China and Korea. Some in China survive over a thousand years. Amazing carpentry of the East.
The part where they cut and fell the tree made me cry. To see just a majestic and old tree dead and cut down was a real shame. Atleast it was respected enough by being given a proper second life.
Soooo it would've been less said if an already dead tree fell naturally, potentially falling on the owner's house, than simply cutting it down and felling it in a controlled direction?
Did you even try to understand my point ? I just pointed out that it was sad that this 300 year old tree was dead. Nothing less nothing more. Now a days very few such trees exist which are centuries old and that is the reason for my sadness. I am not sad that it was felled i was sad that it was dead. P.S. it should be sad not said
sorry I was confused by your use of the english language when you said "the part where they cut AND fell the tree made me cry" "and old tree AND cut down was a real shame." I understand your point now

It took me 15 yrs to gain the patience to woodwork the old way. It was a challenge from slamming crap together at the job. So i quit the job. It was garbage. Everything in my demeanor changed when i slowed the hell down and was patient with my joinery. Peace.
Great content, interesting stuff, I have always loved architecture, and have recently taken interest in carpentry, both modern and ancient, specifically Scandinavian Viking craftsmanship. We have in many ways lost that, but I am glad the old methods are preserved in various places.
Been going through a lot of the comments and I'm really sorry for some of the extremely rude replies from some of the Chinese people. I also want to clarify some points that people are arguing about. So, for one, most of the Forbidden City (history of close to 1000 years) was built using this technique and Japanese temples simply cannot compare to the sheer size and history of the the Forbidden City. And also contrary to what people may think, this art is not dead in China. In fact due to the massive population of China, the number of people skilled in this trade would definitely out number those in Japan. In addition, the art does not stop just at making plain, undercoated furniture, skilled craftsmen in china would also use a similar technique to embed seashells and other naturally colored materials to create beautiful images without the use of an adhesive. The fact that this art doesn't seem to be very prevalent in china is because Chinese people are just so used to seeing it that it is nothing special to us. Furniture built in such a way can be easily found on the market and the majority of Buddhist temples, even modern ones (just as an example) are built in such a way because that's what a Chinese person expects to see when they walk in. Perhaps this is why the video is more centered around Japanese carpenters because they understand how precious and amazing this art really is and Japanese people appreciate it more while Chinese people just take it for granted.
+RainySundayAttics Yeah, Chinese people take their culture for granted. That is precisely why the culture kept changing through the dynasties; clothing styles mutated, social moes were redesigned, art and literature kept evolving. It's a double edged sword. Pay too much attention to the past and you stop moving forward. Pay too much attention to the future and you lose your roots. Fun fact - the architecture was used in bronze pavilions as well. Famously there's a bronze pavilion in the Summer Palace that the French and British forces couldn't loot because it was made of interlocking pieces and secured with a lock at the top, preventing any bit of it from being moved (outside of the windows).
Most western people think japan and Korea are better since they didn’t fall under communist rule and there’s a tons of tech innovation from those places. China deserves more credit than its given

Western woodworkers and carpenters have used hand tools to make things without bolts, screws, and nails. And still do. I make furniture and use traditional joinery, and know many others who do. And that quote that japanese planes take better shavings than a metal plane, is an out right lie.
They said the Japanese plane makes a smoother surface than a planer (machine tool). A well-tuned metal smoothing plane with a sharp iron will also make a smoother surface than a planer. And so will do a well-tuned traditional wooden smoother plane with a sharp iron (in Germany they are still making and using them).
This is very inspirational for me!

Yes the carpentry is nice, but there are a whole range of aesthetics of Japanese art you could go into like Wabisabi, this whole minimalist/ old ways are better crap is just utter nonsense to make a show look better without being very knowledgeable on the subjects.
am i the only one that thinks the name china uncensored is the funniest most ironic title ever because that is literally all they do.

@@jonmartindeiii962because white Americans are clueless
@@jonmartindeiii962the Chinese and Korean joinery for buildings are more simple in nature. This is due to Japan being more prone to seismic activities so the joinery must be crafted so that they withstand things like frequent eartquakes. The handcrafted furnitures just uses various implemented techniques that have been passed down generations and have gotten distinct charasteristics. Think of it as Japanese animation. Even though the animation was heavily influenced and inspired by US, no one calls anime style as American.

I feel so guilty watching this. Just bought an electric planer yesterday.
lmao
Even da Vinci understood. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". The more we complicate our lives, the less living we actually do. Thank you for a beautiful video.
true, we do need simple things, its complicated in its own way but we cant see it when we are always surrounded by things that seem complicated in appearance
Finally, I found something interesting to watch on TH-cam. Amazing work done by the Japanese carpenters.
Didn't want this video to end! So peaceful and interesting. Pure beauty 🇯🇵
"They honored the space itself... they have a reverence for their matterials"
You said everything!!!!!
Much aesthetics, much beauty, much satisfaction.
Much money
Such craftsmanship. Wow.
Was this supposed to make me cry, why am I crying. This was beautiful. Thank you.
This is quite fantastic. I had been aware of Japanese joinery, but still learned a lot. Functionality, simplicity, beauty... Thanks for posting.
fun fact: some western tools are "push" tools, like a regular saw or wood plane you push. japanese are "pull" tools like the japanese saw and wood plane
And sharpness is the key!
the reason being that in the west we push the soul of the wood away from us. In the the east they want to pull the soul toward you.
@@timgriffith9149 That is an interesting philosophy and a good way to look at it.
@@timgriffith9149 it’s also easier to pull then push.
@@timgriffith9149 There is a reason. That isn't it.
Real life version of Mr. Miyagi...great craftsman
I'm in awe of this artist. You're a very very blessed man. Absolutely love your work.
30 years is a long time to wait for a table. The food is gonna get cold...
there is nothing stopping a person from learning this trade, you can make one of these tables yourself
Money and time, 20 years for the first piece of wood, buying the equipment to get those trees etc.
@@Kuraakka Like they said. There is nothing stopping anyone, if they think it's a priority.
Absolutely beautiful. It goes much deeper than the finished product
That documentary was so awesome. 10/10 especially for being sourced from a TH-cam channel.
One can almost get misty eyed watching how gingerly and masterful these artist work
thank you for this beautiful, short doc on Japanese Carpentry. It was amazing!
I agree!
The knowledge from this man is powerful
I really admire Hanafusa-san ☺ His creations are so true to nature. Absolutely beautiful.
8:54 I wished every single person on earth was as humble as he is towards nature.
I hope this art form never dies. There is such meaning and beauty behind the carpentry
I seen a Japanese house made without nails! It amazing!
Getting interviewed in a huge NYC apartment: "I just wanted to simplify my life."
this documentary is full of contradictions.
CircumcisionIsChildAbuse It’s almost like people are complex creatures and life is full of shades of grey rather then being so black and white...
I think it's just related to the asian culture = 'simple life' culture stereotype. As if every East Asian person is a buddhist monk.
@@sparkforce9975
?????????????????????

Seeing the master carpenter watching the old elm tree being cut down is a thing of wonder. Watching the tree being slabbed with its age and imperfections and supreme beauty and size is calling on something inside me. I am a danish carpenters apprentice and to me these craftsmen are poets.
This is pure gold..I mean... wood.
That's so cool! I need to show this to my dad. He is very passionate about carpentry and he's always building things.
Please do! My Dad is the same way. Let me know what he thinks.
***** He loved it :) Thank you for this video and for replying.
Watched this many times, cannot understand any criticism. Japanese craftsmen showing skills few can emulate - using very basic tools - simply fantastic.
I’m happy Chris Chappell made this piece available for us to see. Thank you for your imagination and foresight
Over and Out
The way Japanese craftsman join wood is something I've enjoyed for years. Their level of joinery is beyond master craftsman.
Absolutely love the philosophy behind this kind of carpentry, we need to learn how to cherish nature again and use nature in a radical eco-friendly manner.

"advanced people"? Well we won't talk about the 2nd War.
@@hiramcarter Yeah can people please stop going on about that! All countries have done stuff wrong in the past, we don't need to continually drag them for it.
Im not sure if this episode was really about Japanese carpentering or one big advertisement for a company.

believe me, they certainly do not need to advertise....
They said nothing about history or that in the context of japan they focused 100% on that company in NY

Definitely a good question, I was expecting some history of craftsmanship on those majestic Japanese building.
And designed and organized so precisely and orderly
Loved seeing the hand craft approach (as I type with a messed up finger courtesy of my table saw)...
Haha, wow, I hope not too messed up!

@@TheFrogInYourClosetWatchingYou the table is not crap, maybe a bit overpriced but for sure not crap
80k for that table? it’s high quality but Is it really eighty thousand dollars of craft?

wonderful made documentary - 25 min of how to make a table and it is interesting as hell.... great work
People like traditional Japanese architecture, not because it is Japanese, but because it attempts to be in harmony with nature. That is something that the Japanese got right, not something that they intrinsically are. People like harmony with nature, because that is an instinct, which is built into us.. and that is something the Japanese have traditionally been very good at embracing.
i want say japanese architecture come from china, everything you know about tradition japanese are chinese

Influence is pretty limited to Buddhist architecture,shoin-zukuri, shinden-zukuri, sukiya-zukuri,ryokan,nagaya,ochaya,nagaya,machiya, farm house architecture, originated in Japan as well. Another example would be Japanese castles their are unique not only when compared to castles in Europe they are unique in Asia as well.

I wasn't trying nor did I disrespect anybody, I was trying do to show that one's culture taken taking influence from another does not mean one is an exact copy of one or it was one-sided,or has influence from only one place, that said however no ,no one provide a base for anybody's culture influences does not provide a base, there's also a lot of things that are not from China but some people think they are or have been disproven to be from there, China itself has a ton of things from other cultures, a lot which is unknown, dismissed by a lot of people, or is discussed about, nobody however is cleaning to have provide base.
@@eagle162 okay lets make it clear, china do take influence from other culture but its a very minor influence since they are influenced a lot from buddhism ( india) and their architectural can't be more different, they invent these things on their own, while japan copied it at first and then added changes to it, so they didn't invent it on their own, they invent the very minor changes
And why i say bases, because u have the timeline all wrong, the osaka castle, himeji castle unique design is build around 1600, while heian kyo is in 800, so obviously there are changes based on the previous building technique ( tang dynasty in heian kyo period)

Great content, interesting stuff, I have always loved architecture, and have recently taken interest in carpentry, both modern and ancient, specifically Scandinavian Viking craftsmanship. We have in many ways lost that, but I am glad the old methods are preserved in various places.
This is just so great to watch! Very relaxing.
What I enjoy is watching a true craftsman. No matter his or her race.
Famously there's a bronze pavilion in the Summer Palace that the French and British forces couldn't loot because it was made of interlocking pieces and secured with a lock at the top, preventing any bit of it from being moved (outside of the windows).
finally, some good sense.

And that quote that japanese planes take better shavings than a metal plane, is an out right lie.
start charging 40k for a table and someone will make a documentary :)
