In my humble opinion, this is Coltrane's most Lyrical and Gorgeous solo in the 1950's!! The whole album is definitely a must have Classic!!

Sonny Clark is my pick for greatest piano jazz man of the 1950's. IMHO. R.I.P. you most talented musician who died way too soon.

Sonny Clark was making more interesting albums than Horace Silver or Art Blakey in his 1957-1959 peak, writing great tunes & arrangements, playing great piano...he was the whole package. He's so much more than a footnote to John Coltrane.

I agree. Sonny Clark was one of those great talents and spirits in jazz music who was too much ignored and underrated. The history of jazz music contains so many musicians like Sonny Clark who played at world class levels but for different reasons were never given that all-important boost and support by the media and big promoters in the music business.
People like Miles, Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul were given that needed boost. People like Sonny Clark, Kenny Dorham and Tina Brooks were not given that career lift.

He was a fantastic player right to the end, on classic sessions with Dexter Gordon and Jackie McLean. He and Kenny Drew had rare talents for accompaniment.

There's not much left of the "speak low" advice in Coltrane's version. But Kurt Weill (or his Muse, Lotte Lenya) sing it about the same.

I agree. It sounds like he starts to lead to the B section at 1:47, drops a few beats and gets back on track.
