That’s right. If it fails the thermostat won’t open and water won’t circulate through the radiator. The engine then overheats. Some cars are designed to fail with it open, which is better but comes with other problems.
@@SteveWardellDIY Im currently looking at getting a c2 and the previous owner says that it over heats / the temps get high and so he pulls over and gets a coffee then he is good to go for another 100 to 120 mile journey etc , would that be the thermostat or the water pump failure
@@gaminggts8644 Impossible to tell the true cause without investigating, but unlikely to be the water pump. If that had failed the water wouldn’t move at all and the engine would overheat very quickly. It may be a failing thermostat that’s opening enough to allow enough flow to cool when the car is moving fast with high airflow across the radiator, but now I’m speculating. The symptoms could also be caused by gunk/restrictions somewhere else in the water system, a reservoir cap not sealing, or a head gasket failure, so check for other signs of the root cause.
@@SteveWardellDIY thanks I'll text the guy and see if he has any other symptoms because if I was to buy it I'll have to get it fixed there then drive 323miles back home
No. It shouldn’t need sealant. I think you might be doing something wrong or have a crack/split in something. Have a really good look at the components and where the leak is coming from. Thanks for watching. Steve
@SteveWardellDIY i have the opposite problem, my car is still not heat, the temperature is only 55-60 Celsius , I think my thermostat is still opened and can't heat the engine , what do you think ?
@@rcstech8634the engine creates the heat, and the thermostat allows hot water to the radiator to cool it to prevent overheat. If the thermostat is stuck open the radiator will cool more than necessary, which could show as the low temperatures you’re seeing. Even when stuck open I’d expect the temperature to be normal or close to it when the car is static and idling for a while, as the low airflow over the radiator makes it less effective.
Hi great video , changing the thermostat is that due to not opening and engine over heating temp going up ? Thanks

Do you have to apply some kind of sealant? There is a seal with my thermostat but as soon as i plugged it back it leaks everywhere !!

Do C2 thermostats regularly fail. My sons car has suddenly started overheating but no visible signs of leaks etc. its on 61k 59 reg.
They’re standard design so yes they do fail and will be more likely to on older cars such as yours. Thanks for watching.
