    When I see a radio like this I don't see a wreck of a radio I see a well used well loved radio. I see many many hours that it provided for its owners. I am sure it will be brought back to life by you.

    It's Mr. Buddy I go by....... And for a good reason if I may add. Watching you for me goes back a while. For some reason your voicing on videos gives me a respected few of your experiences. We all wish that we could effect the point of view of others..... as for how they view radio. but as I got older I realize You and I have the same values. This episode "Ft101" is a favorite of mine, and I'm glued to the tube when ever you have an episode...... Thank you for what you do to save these relics of the past.... I think you do it better then anyone I've seen.... with respect stay10-8

Handy tips for cleaning connection points. Your comments on repair vs. restoration were right on the money. Reminds me of the analogy with vehicles. Big difference in restoring and making it a nice driver. Hope it works out well for you. :)

      Hey Doug. Took a long time to find one. Yes repair vs restore is a big difference, I get emails all the time with folks asking me to restore a radio. Just dont have the time and is why I do videos to show folks they could do it themself. Thanks for watching.

    I too picked up an FT-101, an 'EX', but fortunately nothing is broken or modified in weird ways, so I'll replace a couple of old parts in the amplifier and driver stage just to be on the safe side and have it back on the air with a minimum of fuss. They are a nice, simple, good performing, old radio. I like them.

    Yaesu FT-101B with an odd mod. Looks pretty dirty and worn a bit on the outside but works very good. You do
    know your way around one these units Buddy and just giving it some attention inside ( new switch,tubes, relay sticking,
    poor soldered connections, and a good cleaning of contacts ) and it may have many years of use before needing any kind
    of restoration. Looking forward for a part 2 soon.

    You can easily clean the pcb male plug halves, but what about the equally corroded female sockets in the chassis? The only way I've found is to use cleaner and plug the board in and out many times. Is there a better way? I have a second hand excellent condition original 101 (no letter suffix). It passed all the usual tests and worked for about 2 hours into a good dummy load before a big loud spark somewhere inside. I haven't yet worked out what flashed over - it was almost certainly HT or big RF - and I'm reluctant to turn it on again until I find out. :(( I just need to find the time to investigate!

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used pipe cleaners to tackle the sockets if they are really bad. Most of the time plugging the board in and out takes care of it. Thanks for watchhing. Time is always a problem

    Once again an excellent video perfectly timed as I need to align a 101B and 101E. Many skip over the “boring” bits but I like seeing everything involved in the process eg cleaning of the board edge connectors. I noted some partial recapping of some boards. Will you do all on the reg board? The tracks lift easily so have to go carefully with the heat. Would be interested in the reg board voltage measurements as my 101B had some variations over service manual but operation is not impacted. Not sure how much or little variation is ok? Glad to keep supporting you on Patreon for what you provide.

    • @TheRadioShop

    I wonder why you just never show an alignment of an FT101. You get them in all the time, you've stated you would, and I been waiting since 2016 for the Part 4 video you promised of an alignment Buddy lol ... seriosuly why not do it as it would be so helpful to many of us? Hope your Father's Day was good!

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting question. Let me explain. No, I do not get them in all the time as I am not into repairing radios for consumers. I may have worked on 2 since 2016 that bolonged to other folks. All the rest belong to me. Next to do an alignment we need a radio that is fully working without any issues. It is not practical to align a radio that is not working properly. Remember I do this as a hobby and mostly to show folks that you can repair radios yourself instead of paying large repair and shipping bills. Now with the 101B I just purchased and knowing a little of the history (it was used on 11 meters) it is a good canadate for an alignment. Which I will be releasing the video over the next couple of weeks. So yes it is coming. Thanks for the comment.
