    I am not a Catholic but I still find great value in the liturgy of the hours even if it's just pausing to read the daily office I also do the daily Missal readings in my private time.

    I love the Liturgy of the Hours! I’m a new(ish) Catholic (confirmed Easter 2018), and the practice of praying the LoTH has been incredibly helpful for deepening my faith. Thanks for the video! It’s a good reminder that I need to start praying the LoTH regularly again.

    brother casey like rosary is very common among the catholics why it is not taught or explained to the people about adoration because I see very few people who really understand the power of the holy hour as a result very few people attend it

      we could be the change. Just promote divine office and LotH around our immediate circle, ask priests we know to promote it, start LotH groups in our churches... there are many stuff we can do.
      This is a simple document that summarizes the development of liturgy of hours. www.opne.org/Library/Formation/Liturgy%20of%20the%20Hours%20090110.pdf
      It says that laity wanted to pray LotH , but expensive printing costs, rarity of books , and illiteracy among population hindered wide scale adoption. So rosary was made popular. Now we have it all. We can easily promote LotH.
      Vatican encourages the laity to pray LotH.
      www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_const_19631204_sacrosanctum-concilium_en.html (point 100)
      And I read that it's even required to be promoted in parishes, especially evening prayer/vespers on sundays by the church praying together with the laity. We can ask our parish priests, and good friends to promote it.

    I was baptized and confirmed Catholic at the Easter Vigil Service. My journey and understanding of the faith, started over the course of the past 4 years, and started getting deeper when I started praying the Rosary in June 2020, and then did what was basically a retreat, on a daily basis that ended with a prayer in November with my being consecrated to Mary and Jesus. During that time I started feeling a calling to join a religious order, with the calling to join the Franciscan Order of which there is one in my state. Now I'm doing what is basically another retreat that will end with a prayer to consecrate myself to St. Joseph who was in life the Earthly father of Jesus. I also pray the Liturgy Of The Hours, but because of my work schedule, I only have time at present to pray it in the evening.

    The one topic diplomatically avoided is this: while the Hours are obviously part of monastic life and worship, and can be done as private prayer, why has liturgical use/celebration of same nearly gone from most R.C. parish churches? Morning prayer, evening prayer, compline etc. is more likely nowadays to be found either in your church's Anglican ordinariate or actual Anglican/Episcopal places and sometimes Lutheran churches. It is even done at some non-RC universities such as Duke chapel in N.C. USA. which has both vespers weekdays and on Sunday choral evensong. But try to find it in your non-monastic churches.

    I came to your channel when looking for videos about Mission San Luis Rey. We started a family tradition of visiting a different Mission each year when we take our annual trip to California. Last year we visited Mission San Diego. This summer it was Mission San Luis Rey. They wete both amazing! We're not Catholic, but me and my wife really enjoy your videos. We are both musical and enjoy a lot of the music and hymns that have traditionally been associated with the Roman Catholic Church. I was wondering if you have a favorite hymn or hymns?

    As a protestant, I discovered the daily office four decades ago via the Lutherans. It changed my prayer life, and I've followed it in some fashion ever since. You're right, Brother Casey. It's not just for monastics, it's for everyone. Imagine if the entire church followed this pattern. It might just change history.

    Br. Casey, in my preparation for the priesthood, I am interested in getting an early start on the Divine Office. My question is that I want to sing the chants, and people are recommending the Mundelein Psalter. I honestly am confused about the neumes and how to read them. I am fairly knowledgeable in music theory, but this is new to me. The main part of my question is someone said the chans don't have keys, does this mean I can sing in whatever key with whatever notes I want? I may sound stupid but I honestly just want to figure it out.

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Edwin Rivera I don't know a whole lot about the Benedictine rule or the life of monks, but I know that they live a much more contemplative and stable life than friars, remaining in one place and focusing on prayer. Friars are much more active and move around much more.

    There are several web sites/programs that give the divine office. Personally I use Hofficium-20111103, which is in English/Latin and Polish/Latin. This program offers choice of versions from Pre-Trident Monastic to Rubrics 1960. For phone apps there are a variety available, again I have 1962 Divine Office Breviary on my smart phone.

      There is a guide to the LotH. You can get it at a Catholic bookstore or, eBay. It is called: St. Joseph guide to the liturgy of the hours. Make sure to get the one that corresponds to the number of volumes you have. 1-4 or, just 1. I don't recommend the 1 volume because, it's much more complicated. God bless!

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Edwin Rivera There is no officially set time for any of these prayers. As the name of the prayer indicates, it's "mid-morning," "mid-afternoon." Traditionally, the first hour of the day was 6:00am. This was morning prayer. Three hours later, 9:00am was mid-morning, followed by mid-day (12:00), followed by mid-afternoon (3:00), and evening prayer (6:00). Night prayer is after sunset, and the office of readings does not have a set time, but was traditionally in the middle of the night.

    Hello Br. Casey, my question is related to the video. I thought religious took vows of poverty. If so, how would you pay for dog food, vet bills, etc.? Those can be very expensive and is why I don't have a pet. Thank you.

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Zina, it's important to remember that we take a vow of poverty, not destitution. Poor people don't have "nothing" they have "little." We try to maintain a very simple lifestyle, not buying excessive or luxury items, only what we need. But we obviously have money. We need to go to the doctor, buy groceries, drive a car, have a house to live in, etc. I'm not sure what you mean by dog food and vet bills, but yes, those things can be expensive which is why Franciscans don't normally care for animals.

I meant dog food and vet bills cause maybe I was commenting on the wrong video...I binge watched your videos last night and watched the video on whether you can have pets. How do I know If I am praying correctly? I start my pray to try to thank god for all he has done, but then I go into asking him to do stuff for me and other people I know. This leaves me feeling selfish. So I am basically asking how to pray. I pray things like the rosary, but I feel like I should have a closer relationship with god, and I need to build this with prayer form my heart. Is this wrong?

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Segaman121 First of all, there is no such thing as a wrong way to pray. Prayer is simply communicating with God. That can be very formal, like petitionary (asking for things) and thanksgiving (thanking God for blessings), or very informal like a conversation or centering prayer. The question you have to ask yourself, really, is St. Francis' question: "Who are you Lord, and who am I?" If you can answer that question and know what the relationship means, then your prayer will naturally reflect that.

    Brother. I have been knocked down by my Priest. I have been staring in The Monastic Vocation. Following The Rules Of Saint Benedict. I still need to take my RCIA classes. I do The Sabbath on Saturday. He tells me I need to stop and do it on Sunday, If not I will not be saved. Is this true? Please I really need for you to comment back. Do all Monks follow The Sabbath on Saturday. If yes... Why?

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edwin Rivera Hi Edwin, I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with the Monastic Rule and so cannot give great advice. I will say, though, if you are still in RCIA, you need to focus on becoming a Christian before you can become a monk. Focus on what it means to be a baptized Christian first. I'm sure there are plenty of good people in your Church that can help you with that. Peace and good.

    • @edwinrivera8449
      @edwinrivera8449 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      With all due respect... Do you follow The Forth Commandment The Sabbath on Saturday or Sunday? Who The Catholic church changed, Not GOD. Matthew 5:17-20

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Edwin Rivera By fourth commandment I assume you mean the Protestant version of the ten commandments, regarding the Sabbath. The Ten Commandments themselves are actually in paragraph form in the book of exodus, containing more than just 10 precepts, and have been ordered three different ways (Catholic/Lutheran, Jewish, and Protestant). For us, the sabbath is the 3rd commandments.
      As far as the day of the Sabbath, it was originally celebrated by Jews on Saturday, the day they made sacrifice in the temple. In the early Church, the first Christians considered themselves to be still Jewish, just Jewish Christians. They went to sabbath celebrations on Saturday, then broke bread in holy Eucharist on Sunday. Slowly, they separated themselves from the Jews, and simply kept the Sunday practice of Eucharist.
      The specific day of the week is sort of arbitrary. The Church for 2000 years has celebrated it on Sunday, and so we remain in continuity with the rest of history. God does not care about Friday or Saturday or Sunday, God cares that a day is dedicated to him.

      @galleryguide9913 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a lay person there are no set rules, the fact that you are making the effort is a very good sign. Bearing in mind that when the Breviary offices were developed the fixed notion of time did not really exist. In the Roman world the timing would have been approximate as evidenced in the traditional names of the day hours (prime, tierce, sext, none) . The idea being that prime at the first hour of day break whenever that would be and the rest at 3 hour intervals hence the 3rd, 6th and 9th hours with High Mass after tierce., which is why High Mass is still normally are still held arround 10 and 11am.

    what are some of the things you do or find uplifting when you feel burned out/exhausted spiritually?

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Danny Guy The first thing is simple and probably not what you would expect, but simply praying the office anyway. I have a strong sense of fidelity when it comes to prayer: God is always there waiting for me... If God is going to show up, I will show up. The second is to be very clear with God how I am feeling. "God, I'm exhausted. I'm having doubts. I'm angry at this. I'm super bored and I want to do anything in the world except pray." And so on. Many times being able to express the feeling of burnout helps me get beyond it. Sitting in that discomfort and agony has actually been the most fruitful prayer at times because it is only at that moment that I can completely rely on God.

      +MaroonLion I know it's a cliche, but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Prayer, in its essence, is a personal willingness to be closer to God. You can't make people do it. You can facilitate group prayer to make it easier, put a lot of time into planning it to make it more enjoyable, and you can witness to others its great power to make it more meaningful.

    Do priests and/or friars get sick days?

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Al Paca That's kind of a difficult question because being a friar isn't quite a job, it's a lifestyle. It depends what a friar does (professor, parish priest, artist, social worker, etc.) As far as parish priests go (which I assume is closer to your question), there's really no one we have to answer to except the people we serve. In that way, we COULD take lots of vacations, sick days, and days off, but because people are relying on us (and we feel called to serve), many friars will not take off unless absolutely necessary.

    • @SportsPhanatic17
      @SportsPhanatic17 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breaking In The Habit Ok, that makes more sense than having a strict amount of time off.

    When you start using a book when you talk to God, there is a problem...How would you feel if I talked to you by reading a book. Prayer is alive, not written on a page. It's a conversation without structure. It's fueled by Holy Spirit, not synchronized by the written letter, which conforms you into the religious mold.

      Well, you see, that's the great beauty of our faith: it's not about either/or, but both/and. I think spontaneous prayer from the heart is a great way to pray to God. But it's inherently private. No one else can pray the same way I'm praying at the same time. But if we pray prayer that have been written down, basically entirely composed of God's word in the Bible, then we can bring our voices together in one and experience prayer in a different way. Both are fruitful, and I would caution you against thinking so dichotomously. Look what you're losing by picking only one over the other.
