  • In this video I talk about why it is important not to rush the net as the serving team. You should always react to your partners shot accordingly!

I completely agree with the concept you're communicating, but in this video I would argue that the problem is that the guy wasn't ready/aggressive enough with his fifth shot. At this level I would expect him to be able to handle that particular ball on the move. While his partner's third wasn't great, their opponent's fourth shot ended up being high and inviting. Staying back longer does give you more time to react, however, it also gives your opponents more options. If you're good at applying pressure in mixed, your opponents will be too afraid to hit to you in that situation, anyway.

Great breakdown of a Pickleball point. I tend to rush the net in order to minimize the time in the transition zone. Otherwise they can find your feet! But they can hit at you while you're rushing in and catch you in between.

Looks like the strategy for this 4.5 and 5.0 video is similar to 3.5. However the advanced players have better shot selection and are more consistent. Is this correct ?
Also I would like to see your breakdown videos of dinking at 4.0-5.0 level play.
    Thanks. Really great offering.

Even advanced players struggle to hit a perfect shot into the kitchen sometimes, which is why it is important to watch your partners shot an react accordingly. I will definitely get some dinking videos up before too long. Thanks for more feedback, Harry!

At about 6 minutes in, the closer team did not react well to the great drop-shot as you indicate, as you say. As you say, they waited to see that the drop was good, that it landed in the kitchen: well, that is too late, too late for them to get to the NVZ line. They should have recognized the arc of their great return while it was still on their side, know that the shot was heading into the NVZ, and moved while the ball was arcing, moved while the ball was still arcing on their side and heading toward the net. This would have given them time to move up, likely right to the NVZ line. Just saying.

Thanks for watching, and thank you for the additional feedback! Absolutely you should follow a drop immediately off the paddle if it looks good. Excellent point!

Many of us older players can not stop and then accelerate to the net from the baseline once a good drop is accomplished. We have to follow the ball forward regardless of the quality of the third shot and be ready to defend. Personally I return high and deep which allows for plenty of time to move to the kitchen line. Seems to work well for me with knee arthritis. Other than that I like the videos analysis.

Hello, and thank you for your thoughtful insight to the video. Absolutely I agree that players who have mobility issues should generally keep moving forward. However, I will say it is still important to pay attention to your partners shot so that you can react accordingly. For example, if your partner hits a drive at the opponent on your side of the net then you need to be ready for the block that is coming back at you. If you just blindly move to the net you may not be ready for that scenario.

@@precisepickleball3279 yes, generally we have been instructed to drive to the middle or drop to the forehand hip. That presents both both forehand and backhand 5th shot opportunity for both players instead of jamming your partner with a block to his backhand by driving to the person directly in front of him as he advances forward. We play mixed levels of all ages so it's just a different adjustment to compensate for what we refer to as Ghetto ball. It's pretty much 4 people playing singles with no attempt to coordinate with your ever changing partner. I'm sure that you are correct when playing with equally skilled partners. Hopefully I can experience that someday.
