Hi there Ford owners. Today on your 2018 Ford Edge, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install Blue Ox's diode wiring kit. There's five main components you'll need when flat towing your vehicle behind your motor home. You'll need your tow bar, which is the connection between your motor home and your vehicle. You'll need your base plate, which is the connection point that you'll put on the vehicle that your tow bar will attach to. Your safety cables, which is a supplemental connection, in addition to your tow bar.
You'll need your diode wiring, which will take all the lighting signals from your motor home and transfer them to the lights at the back of your vehicle so people behind you will know your intentions when going down the road and lastly, your supplemental braking system, which will apply the brakes in your vehicle when you hit the brakes in your motor home to help you come to a safe stop and additional accessories you might want to consider beyond the five main components, is a charge line kit. That's going to take the alternator, our source of power from our motor home and charge our battery here on our vehicle. So on those long trips where we haven't started our vehicle in a long time, it's going to ensure that battery stays topped up when we reach our destination. We're out here at the back of the vehicle and I've turned on the hazard lights inside of our motor home and you can see the lights on our motor home are being mimicked right back here on our vehicle. And it's going to do this with all the necessary lighting, which includes your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps and brake lamps and this will ensure that you're DOD inaudible 00:01:21 compliant in all States and everyone around you is going to know your intentions going down the road. Now diode wiring is not the only way you can get lights here at the back of your motor home, but it's my preferred method. Because once you install it, it's going to be permanently inside your vehicle.
You're never even going to know that it's there, because it's hidden behind all of your compartments and components behind our taillight assembly here and you just plug in at the connector at the front and you're ready to go. Now, this is Blue Ox's. There is also Roadmasters and those are comparable with one another. Both are going to serve the same functions. They're going to give you the same amount of coverage as far as everything being hidden inside of the car, but it really comes down to brand loyalty on those.A couple of other options you have are magnetic lights and bulb and socket.
With magnetic lights, they're going to stick on top of your vehicle and you're not going to be tapped into the lights back here whatsoever. It's going to go straight from the motor home to the ones mounted on top and those are great because you're not tapping into the vehicle whatsoever. So if you're worried about warranty or maybe you just don't want to do any wiring at home, that's an easy way to be able to get that done. The issue with those, is that you have to set them up every single time. You got to get them out, run that wire up and make your connections.
So it is a little bit more time involved every time you want to flat tow. The other thing is that when they're on top on your roof here, this panel is plastic so you do have to find a metal spot, not an issue on our Edge. There is a protective pad on the bottom on those to protect against scratches, but over time, those could wear off. The bulb and sockets are another style that you don't have to tap into any of the wiring on your vehicle, but you do have to drill a hole into your taillight assembly and with many of our modern taillights that we have today that are LED, there's just not room for the bulb and socket on those. So I really wouldn't recommend that for your Edge. The other thing I want to talk about with the diode wiring and what's cool about them, besides the fact that they're completely hidden and they're extremely easy once you've got everything installed, is they use your existing lights here on the vehicle to illuminate. So we're sending our signals from our motor home to these lights to illuminate them. The diodes act as a one-way check valve that prevents that current that's coming from our motor home to back feed into the wiring on our Edge here.So that keeps our wiring completely safe. The diode keeps any
