    "If you can ride in sand you can ride in anything"
    Something I learned the hard way. Down here in Florida all we have is sand. I was discouraged beyond belief. Hit dirt for the first time and riding was....easy.
    Still hard but compared to sand, easy.

      +Zecke Schellinx yeah man. It's tough at first but it becomes fun when you get the hang of it. Then when you finally step on dirt like the one in this video it's cake. The bike doesn't throw you off if you let off.

      Rick S Thé best tip is to try and stay on top of the sand and keep the bike in very high revs. I personally love sand tracks because it feels like you are on rails.

    Keeping ur elbows up is important because the elbows arent out of the way u cant get to the front of the bike arms up u can slide up on the tank for turns an get to the front as u jump u do a row once on the face an again when u land u row forward gas an move back...in 1973 ish i Got MXA mag as a thanks for helping Dave the art director relocate to cali my did that...i was waiting to get my first dirtbike an all i had as a riding position reference was a gazillion photos of triple 125cc champ marty smith i would just try to copy his body position as i went into turns jumping i learn from watch that McGrath guy jumping isthe most fun u can have on a dirt bike...its just amazing what a modern dirtbike is capable of launching an being able to just land on flat ground from some 15 feet in the air...thanks to the Proffessor peace...hey learning an just riding a dirt bike is for super an highly coordinated if ur not be real patience the less u no the more the bike works against u...best thing to do is start with an on a really small 80cc shifting bike that doesnt weigh a lot...its all the same the bikes just get bigger meaner an faster...so learn on real small bike because it wouldhurt u as hard....an will be easier to control less inertia..the force that breaks bones

    I got a tip from a pro rider when I started riding, "Never take your feet off the pegs". It worked for me. This is the first vid I've ever seen where someone says that same thing.
    I've never seen one time when sticking a foot out has helped, but I've seen hundreds of times when it hits the ground and throws the rider off balance. It slows you down.

    Its interesting, and I don't doubt that both are true, but its also said that besides sand, if one can ride fast on hardpack ( such as Carlsbad, arguably the track where more National Champions learned to go fast than any other) one can go fast anywhere. The two extremes in terrain, each requiring completely different techniques.

    Hey you might think who the heck am i,well my fellow riders,I was just doing it for fun,but I'm the person who started this scrub thing,at gatorback on CR 250 two stroke,I was really mad at myself,I was trying to jump that big uphill step up at gatorback, but the power valve on CR was not working I had fall throttle power and no bottom or mid,I was jump the triple down into the pit,and then then coming back up to the finish line, there was new double with not much run,if could land just over top of the hill on the flat,I could run at it and make it,so coming up the whooped out hill I found a good size bump close to the bottom on the right side of the track, and I hit it as hard as I could loading the suspension,I flick the bike over to stay as low as I could and not fly upwards more lower, and I flew about fifty feet up the hill bike laid over to the left, like low flying jet may skimming the hill as I flew over it,and I made landed right on top of the flat, third floor landing, man that was so cool.den I forgot about it because,no happy day as I had already decided that was my last race ever, then later that day 125 national I see ricky Carmichael, and Kevin Windham using my line that made my departure a little gratifying,at least it made smile, hell even chuckle, and I was like that looks as cool as it felt, still may be a bit strange the way they just popped over the crest of the hill and landed, and then blasted away towards the double, idiots had to put a bump at base of double to make it harder,in practice McGrath even tried to get them to remove it,I was eye it,and. I just laugh when MC stop at the base of the jump and had a little chat, with bulldozer operated, they got no clue,40 degree hill no run at the jump and they put kicker at the base of it.I never did get the live tape from Gary Bailey I was paying him to film me anylize my riding, okay hope showed it to David Bailey...Gary is amazing how long he's been riding an teaching, someone told me he was the first American to beat the Europeans at this new thing they call moto x..
    Fly low an fly fast and don't let the F 18's hit you in da ... Buttocks...

    Do guys usually shift with or without the clutch?

    • @robertsnyder5522
      @robertsnyder5522 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Joe Mamma shift up with the clutch....shift down without the clutch. However on a track I will almost always shift down with the clutch because it's usually before a turn and I don't want a bunch of engine break going into the turn to slow me down. I only want my breaks to slow me down and then I unleash the gas and clutch out of the turn. The only time I shift down without the clutch is when I need more power due to the bike bogging down too much...like headed up a hill and I find myself in the wrong gear.

    New riders one of the best ways to practice is old school set up a couple tires, for you to get to learn your bike and its balance. and its center, this technic helps you safe learn to get your timing down,on a flat surface before you start dealing with suspension ups and downs, heck I still after 40 years of riding could still go out in the yard an ride around a couple tires for hours and have great ole time, best part is it made me so good I just use a small tiny movement of my head/Helmut to master the point of traction, what's that you say, finding the central, real simple , neutral position on the bike, goes like this you have traction or us don't,get in a good forward position, comfy ,elbows up,"elbow is much important, briefly it keep you in control of throttle, second elbows down you can't move back to front on the bike, when you get to the jump section of this book, first time I skyed my first really big jump I was right up to take off point an elbows down hit bump right the last second, arrrh little extra throttle it wasn't pretty... but I learn how important keeping elbows was.back riding around those tires, new people, you can find the center position of your bike like this move forward as far as you can and practice straight line acceleration ,feel the back tire spin, now practice move back a little till the rear tire starts to lift front end up,keep your left hand ready pull clutch, also you should also have your right foot just ready to tap the brake,to keep front wheel from going over your head,uh not good, riding around the tires practice coming in to and around tires sitting down be smooth, leave space between you and the tires, and just start getting to learn the power mostly the feel of traction practice this, and not for five minutes.once done you can start working on using your legs and standing up and doing the same thing that will get you ready for starting to learn how to be in right body position for attacking jumps, please start small because they are all the same you work up to big stuff, don't let your friend tell you, come on,for jumping I will refer you to two diagrams of a jump,Gary Bailey video "the art of jumping" the other is go find as many old video of Jeremy McGrath and watch it in super slow motion, about eight trillion times like I did,and really focus on his body positions as moves ,as comes to the jump and throttles up the face, watch where his body goes just as he leaves the jump, also biggest mistake I made and almost everyone else make,I'm talking even national riders is they don't move their weight on to front wheel as the landing and they lose front end before they crash, that no pretty either, when you land you have to gas smoothly help you land properly and also helps tighten the suspension, moving your weight key, power is gonna push you back on the bike...slow motion you'll really see it better
    ...believe me why would I lie to you I don't even like you.when you get traction, sorted, you have to keep your weight on the outside footage it really helps with traction, use legs to steer the bike mostly, get back on those tires.

    Yeah there has got to be one smartee pants in group, oh yeah, landing that's could be a problem, what you one learn that too, that cost extra for now just try to land really close to the hey bales...no I'm only kidding. If you really practice getting into corners around this little practice drill tires are good cause they also make you go forward as your turning this helps you get some practice driving out of turn rather than just turning, two tires spaced apart helps you really get quick on your reflexes, start out pulling the clutch in and skidding rear tire help change direction, the turn thing, and work front brake into your turns very gently,so many dirt bike racers are scared of the front brake ,head up look ahead of where your going, and breath, fitness trainers explain breathing this way, exhale relax and air flows in by itself, got breathe, its exhale relax air automatically flow in to your lungs, also don't hold your breath, you think it funny people hold there breath for slightest little thing you be surprised.

    Passing oh yeah now you wanna get serious the one really important thing I can say is I never follow any one,r
    ever I won't care if it was ricky or Kevin, even McGrath in a supercross race I always, stayed in a different line, look at it like this, silly, your following a rider little space his lines good, same ones you like you start catch him just a little, bam his bike sixer up,you get a gift, easy pass except your following right in the same line and rut as him now the two of you are out of the race or at least no chance to win any more, second thing I like best about racing is passing work a rider over, some riders don't crack they solid, but if you work a racer that what makes racing really fun it don't always work but you ride different lines and keep going inside outside, may let him hear you but he can't see you in one spot then you come up and let him see your front tire than drop back now he can't see you and he don't here engine, some times you can feel engine noise on your back echoes, you lurk back a little. Then you start him worrying in usually 3 turns is all it takes they start try to move to block your move I just fade back a little and be invisible for just enuf ,and after 3 turns of looking for me and riding back here thinking about where I am they make a mistake and just give the position away, think about it how far down the street could you drive your car looking out the back window more so worrying more about where something was behind you than where you are going, they can't,most can't I don't I always look forward past the next turn rider, what ever I never care about what behind me,the fun is foward, where I'm trying to get to and thru..
