Honor is SAFE at Skydog Sanctuary in Oregon. Claire Staples and her team do AMAZING things, with reuniting families, saving trainer relinquishment’s, and any other horse, burro, mules, and donkeys. I’ll come back and edit this comment with her info. (I was up late and my eyes aren’t working yet 🙄)

The blog story says it was -20 degrees celsius, which is -4 fahrenheit, and the wrangler-drovers are wearing nothing but jeans and hoodies? And none of the horses appear to have their heavy winter coats. Makes you wonder about the accuracy of details, ya know? I also question the statement that during these round ups, adults and foals are "often" killed. (Vague - statistical citation needed.) I follow the daily round up reports of specific HMA gatherings on BLM's site. In terms of total numbers, euthanasia from traumatic injury seems rare and about on par with euthanasia from preexisting conditions such as a compromising congenital deformity or injury in the wild. The outbreak of strangles was horribly sad. On the up side, a vaccinated mustang is protected from diseases that occur in the wild, particularly during drought when bands are forced to congregate at limited water sources. So, after holding, Honor is off to a sanctuary with fresh feed and water, plus vet care? She no longer has to survive cycles of famine, dwindling in body condition and barely hanging on until the relief of spring? She's no longer run and pushed by a stallion to contain her within the stallion's band, bred and struggling to maintain and protect her foals year over year? On yet another day where I've changed soaking wet tee shirts several times and needed breaks to recover from a staggering gait caused by exhaustion, I'm having a hard time sympathizing with a mustang who endured one tough day on the way to a much easier and longer life. To me, it seems she's won the lottery!
My information came from the person who was there that day and documented the roundup with the photos in the video. I personally also have been in contact with people who see what goes on during some of these roundups. I believe the issue is the WAY they are rounded up. It’s traumatic for animals who have never seen humans or helicopters or anything. They’ve lived their life free, and that’s all they know. Nature should be able continue to run its course the way it should be. Another problem is it’s money driven. I have also personally seen hundred a of horses in small holding pens, that are owned by individuals, who get paid per head for holding. I don’t believe that is a better alternative, they should free. If they want to control breeding, it can be done in a better manner. Plus there are already people ready and willing to help keep this situation managed in a better way. Google horse slaughter in Mexico, it’s barbaric and inhumane. I’m not anti food, but if a person understands what stress does to meat, they would maybe look at it differently. When I worked and gathered cattle, I wasn’t always dressed in lots of clothing because you work up your body heat while riding. Do you ride? Just wondering, because it’s a workout and you’d sweat too much if you had too many layers.

Cross country running is a workout and a team mate suffered frost bite on the tip of his nose and ridge of his cheeks in a 1 hour training run at roughly zero, plus whatever the wind chill was. See any of these wranglers in a balaclava? My son-in-law is a Batt Chief outside Reno and advocates for larger and more frequent roundups in their area's HMAs because of multi casualty incidents of mustang vs. vehicle. When mustangs exceed the carrying capacity of outlying areas, they enter neighborhoods for browse. In order to do this, they cross highways. Despite having seen it all, he describes these scenes as the worst imaginable. The west was hard hit by drought and some see this not as a blip in the weather cycle, but a new normal. I think I'll follow the lead of Terry Messmer, a professor at Utah State University who studies wild horse management and advocates for roundups as a humane measure because of our changing eco system. (I'll follow his science, not his practice of embezzlement from the University he was just charged with. 😄) And humane measures cost money, which is very different than the assertion the motive is money. Your local animal shelter didn't build and run itself. The fact that money moves through the shelter system isn't the motive for its existence. And the fact that shelter animals have a transient existence in a kennel is not unlike temporary facilities for mustangs. The Humane Society advocates for fertility control. I support that as well. But they concede helicopter roundups would be necessary where darting is not practicable. (Let's not pretend darting doesn't have risk.) So on the one hand, helicopter roundups are cruel as illustrated by the exception in this video, therefore opposed. But helicopter roundups are necessary for fertility control, so therefore - good. Quite a setup for cognitive dissonance. I can't help but think of dogs that are terrified at the very site of the vet's building, need to be carried in, who pant, whine, even wail and tremble in fear. Roughly .4% of dogs have an anaphylactic reaction to vaccination, and a portion of those dogs die. But we accept these fractions of risk and put them through what amounts to a traumatic experience because it's in their best interest. Likewise, however imperfect, traumatic, etc., we're acting in the best overall interests of mustangs.

They are on a mission to wipe out anything to do with our Culture & Heritage Our horses in both countries helped build them before machinery & cars. Now that man has changed the landscape where they live they still get the blame when it was caused by humans!

If you can’t do that, help by spreading the information, supporting LEGIT sanctuaries, spreading their information… etc. I am making a list of good rescues/sanctuaries on my FB, and will share them here in a community post as well. It’s not proper herd management when these things happen like this. I understand herd management, but it needs to be done right and safely. This borders on felony animal cruelty, in my opinion. If a citizen was caught doing these things to an animal, there would be charges brought. I hope that makes sense.
I don't understand the round up bullshit..leave them be. It's a horse for Christ sake..they don't ruin the land like cattle and man..they graze..move on..graze a little more..move on.. thank God some of them are protected on Native land..😢
