Here my take on this as a fat person myself:
You can be thicker then the average skinny and stuff like that and be healthy but if you are fat to the point of were you can't breathe or walk properly then that is extremely unhealthy. We should encourage them to lose weight and not just say horrible things to them (because it happens alot I know from personal experience) When I got the proper encouragement and from people I lose 156 pounds in a year. This is my opinion tho

I’ve managed to lose 60 pounds over the last few months so here is my thoughts on this video:
I feel like the problem is that people just don’t want to put in the work. Getting the motivation to get up and go do something active can be super hard sometimes, but once you do it you’ll feel amazing after. I liked how in the video you said that working out is uncomfortable and that it should be uncomfortable and I absolutely agree. I have awful gym anxiety so it’s super hard for me to go to the gym. But I also realize that if I don’t go to the gym, it’s going to make it extra harder to get where I want to be. There’s always a choice. You either do something to better yourself or stay the way you are.
I’ve also noticed that the more weight I’ve lost, the more “fat phobic” I’ve gotten. I look at people sometimes and think like “why don’t you just go on a run or eat healthier” and although that may be true, these people may also already be doing that. With the people on TikTok though, I am going to be fatphobic towards them. Promoting an unhealthy lifestyle and accepting it is not a good thing at all. Especially since TikTok is filled with young people. They’re going to think it’s ok to do what they do and keep going at it.
(In no way did I mean for this to be mean, these are just my opinions coming from someone who has been fat my entire life)
I also wanted to point out the idea that being fat is a choice. On some cases that is true, but also it’s not. I have a disorder that causes me to have enlarged manboobs and huge hips and stomach. Those things I cannot change without surgery. So, I do believe that being fat is a choice, but not in all cases.

The “love who you are” moral is very complex. Yes you should accept the things that make you, you. Such as interests, hobbies, dislikes, etc. But that doesn’t mean you should therefore stop trying to improve yourself. It also means that you should analyze your attributes and make sure none of them are harming others or yourself. It’s a message we see so many times in children’s entertainment, and we’re constantly told it, but it’s not a simple black and white subject.

True, but realize that most of these people haven't been "healthy" in years and have gotten used to the chronic unhealthy feelings. To a very large degree, health CAN be seen from appearance, and in these cases, you don't have to know how they feel to know it's unhealthy

but even a step further than that, my family has a history of being overweight and that easily passed down to all three of me and my siblings. personally i don't necessarily "feel" unhealthy yet. sometimes i do but a lot of it is because it COULD turn unhealthy. in a family like mine with a history of being overweight and also getting diabetes if you make too many allowances for yourself then that could easily snowball into getting super unhealthy. you have to make sure you stop it before it gets to the point when you feel unhealthy.

I used to be very overweight and I would blame everyone else except for who was really at fault, me. I put myself there, I decided to stuff my face with food, I decided to not get off my ass and move around, I did it to myself. When I was at my highest weight (70kgs), I finally relised that there comes a point where the excuses stop, and you need to accept the blame. After, I started a calorie deficit and started exercising 5-6 times a week. It made me realize that I actually really enjoy exercise. I think the reason so many people lose weight and gain it back is because they believe that after they reach their ‘goal weight,’ they can go back to eating like how they used to. It’s not a ‘diet change,’ it’s a lifestyle change. I enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle, so after I lost the weight, I continued with it and I have never been happier. I’m now at a healthy weight of 50kgs and I feel better then ever. To anyone who is struggling with losing weight, please, do not give up. There is so much more to life then suffering. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to be healthy. Don’t give in and quit, keep going. You won’t regret reaching your happiest and healthiest self, but you will regret not doing it.

I never had weight issues growing up, but my dad and sister did and still do. My dad especially was always very overweight, he was aware but doesn’t flaunt it like that. He actually tries to diet and exercise a lot but he’s just one of those people who are heavy. I never saw it as a bad thing, and I totally get why people want to be proud and confident, but it isn’t healthy. Just because you’re overweight doesn’t mean you can stay that way and expect everyone to as well, that doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t try to be healthy and active. If you’re trying to lose weight but are still big, yeah it’s no big deal, but don’t just settle for that and expect the world to pat you on the back about it.

Body fat is about calories in and calories out. If you want to cut fat, cut your calories and increase your energy expenditure.
I will say that it’s fairly obvious that there are different body types that hold weight (fat and muscle) differently.
I’m a short (5’2) girl and I can easily gain fat and/or muscle… I’ve chosen muscle because I want to be as strong and healthy as I can be and I am fatphobic and see nothing wrong with being so. My boyfriend is 6’2 and of a naturally slender build, he can eat an insane amount of calories and stay lean.
I have to watch my calories or I will easily put on fat.

That is awful and I am sorry you have gone through that... But that is also anecdotal and you should never take another persons view of life as your own... That is how hatred is passed on.. I know... I have a deeply patriotic Irish family and are very anti-UK... Thankfully my mother didn't feel that way otherwise she wouldn't have moved here and met my father... She ignored the experience her family had gone through.
Domestic violence is something I can relate to having been through it myself. And I am sorry you have. And yes being harassed for how you look is awful... But to play Devil's Advocate... I was bullied to the point of needing counselling at Uni all because I made a joke about a girl... she introduced herself as "Leah or you can call me Princess Leah" and I made what I thought was quite the good star wars/family guy reference "aren't you a little fat to be a princess" ... Needless to say it didn't go down well. I meant nothing by it and didn't even realise she was fuller of body and bust... But I get given grief that borders on racism!
Fact is it's up to you how you take it. When someone is vile to me I don't really feel it... My straight white middle class woke friends get far more offended. It's amazing how fast one can pull out an iPhone and post their outrage to Twitter. But tbh I used it a long time ago to fuel me. Let them think it. Who cares! Those people back in school that said all that stuff... They are now min wage, with a child or two they can't afford living on some estate (In the UK that is bad... Like trailer park) meanwhile I've been to uni, gotten my dream job and have had so many experiences.
Oh and that said girl ended up causing a massive fight at a party for one of the Uni Society's we were both part of. I didn't witness it but apparently she caused a whole fight and people realised then turned on her. A load of them came apologising and I told them to eff off.
Remember those that matter wont mind and those that mind don't matter. Chin up, sweety. Time to be fabulous.

I’m not fat, by any means. I’ve never been that one “fat” kid. But I did have a gut when I was a pre-teen. Genuinely wanted to cut down so I started joining my uncle doing work at 14.
Started off with helping him move his stuff to his new house, and worked up to helping him move scaffolding and learning to sandblast. That and my uncle letting me use his home gym every Thursday with my cousins, and I was a lot healthier by the end of 2021, I’m not super slim, I’m not super buff, but I don’t have such a big gut anymore.

  • @cherrypawz
    @cherrypawz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Honestly, as someone who is overweight myself, i really don't think that fatphobia really has any genuine meaning.
Like, I do think that it's wrong to look at someone and say "ew, you're fat", but looking at someone and encouraging good dietary habits and proper excersize is not bad at all.
I, personally, can't loose weight until i get my hormones in check. No amount of excersize or watching what i eat is helping, and it only started acting like this after my menstrual cycle disappeared.
I can't say that I'm happy to look like this, but there's nothing i can do until my doctor figures out what's causing my imbalance and gets it fixed.

I think this community is good for confidence for the people who have a medical condition and really can’t lose the weight however social media now is promoting both the extremes of super skinny or fat it pushes people to go either way. If you are in the middle you feel pressure to change your weight to be accepted and that aspect needs to change. We need to normalize the spectrum of weights as a whole not just the extreme cases.

I know I sound like a nerd saying this, but fatphobia is a thing, the scientific term is cacomorphobia. But, according to what I looked up, cacomporphobia does not include disliking fat people, it means that you are genuinely afraid of fat people. You're not fat phobic if you don't want to be fat. I'm overweight, and I definitely want that to change. So apparently that means I'm fatphobic? Yeah, makes sense. I can't believe that people are promoting bad lifestyle. I'd honestly rather see skinny people telling me what they eat and shaming on fat people.

As someone who gained weight due to a medical mishap, I believe you should love yourself but you should love yourself enough to be healthy. You may not have health conditions YET but that doesn't mean you're healthy. The body is not meant to have that extra fat. The limitations I got when I gained the weight has been so upsetting. Im doing my best to get better because the extra weight is not okay. Losing weight for me will be extremely hard but I'm not gonna give up because of it like these people are. These people literally will harass people for losing weight and getting healthy its so disgusting.

I love this video, the one thing I wanted to point out tho. Not all fat people have control over their body some medications or medication conditions make it’s really easy to gain weight but really hard to lose weight. Just like some medication or medical conditions make it hard to gain weight. People seem to forget that not all overweight people are fat bc of poor life choices sometimes its out of their control.

Even though this is from a month ago, I would still like to add on. Having a plus size body is both a choice and not a choice. What I mean by this is people can go over the edge with themselves and overeat to their deaths, people who don’t have a choice is mostly due to genetics- of which most people should not say anything about it, considering you nor I know or understand their situation. I get the body positivity community can have its shit moments but I believe it is best to actually look at it for what it is and what it is supposed to be for both skinny and plus sized people. Rather than shaming either side of the coin. Even for those who are currently getting in shape. Just because you’re getting into shape doesn’t give anyone the right to shame others for their issues/actions whether you did it or not.
I am aware you can encourage people to get into shape. However if they don’t want to, then just let them be. 9 times outta 10 they are most likely comfortable with the way that they are.

And just this year I started taking not weight loss, but muscle gain a little more serious. Although, I do have a small chub part which I am currently trying to lose. Along with that, there is plenty of benefits of being strong physically, for example, I get to do what I want in life (Serving in military/ Emergency Response), as well as making my everyday easier, making me less exhausted.

I’m an overweight person myself. In my personal experience it is hard for me to lose weight. I eat way healthier than I used to and I exercise way more than I used to, but it’s still hard for me to lose weight. The most significant weight loss I had was when I got my wisdom teeth taken out and I only lost 10 pounds. My doctor even said it could be a little bit genetic. Not everyone can lose weight as fast or as much as others. I know some people who are skinny like a stick and they can eat all the junk food they want and they don’t gain pounds. They don’t exercise either. There’s nothing wrong with body positivity, but if it gets too far it could be dangerous. I do think people shouldn’t assume that if someone is overweight that they are lazy and shouldn’t put overweight people down. We don’t need to hear “Oh you should lose weight.” Instead just support overweight people who are trying to lose weight by exercising with them or something more useful than telling them something they have heard a bunch of times before.
