His ability to find space near the crease reminds me of the great German footballer Thomas Muller. His ability to see the game developing in real time coupled with his extremely high game IQ lets him almost see the future and get into wide open spaces in dangerous areas. The Germans have a word for him, Raumdeuter, or space interpreter. Hes not the most physically gifted or athletically imposing. He’s not the fastest or strongest and he doesn’t have amazing skills on the ball, but his intelligence and quick thinking makes up for literally all of that and produces one of the best AMF of all time.
It's because Leafs management has finally figured out how to build a line and a team around him. He deserves a cup as much as our city does, and the Leafs franchise need to do all they can to make it happen ASAP!
Unrelated, cause there’s no where else to comment during current affairs (TOR vs NYR): Respect for Rempe. That shit was a title fight, and he looked like a gentleman against Reeves savagery. Reeves had the power, but Remps had the reach, and I think he knew it.

since his wrist injury his toedrag is no longer there like his early years and he rarely scored from the circle. i always thought like what if he can score from the circle like ovi and stamkos. and then boom hes been lowkey working on it and you will see it all season of him scoring from the circle which i think is one of the most scariest spots to score from
It's been incredible to watch Ovi creep up on Gretzky with quite whispers of "what if" slowly changing to "when?" There were 17 years between Gretzky's last 50 goal season and Ovi's first (rookie season). That's over a full generation of NHL talent before Ovi's burst onto the scene. It's unbelievable to think that Matthews is starting to generate his own whispers before Ovi has even overtaken The Great One. In the most optimistic scenario (permit me if you will), we could be watching the two greatest goal scorers ever... at the same time.
@@ShadyLurker16 I think he meant playoff good as in playoff success. The Leafs have been a good regular season team for a while now & that don't mean shit at the end of the day.
Honestly I think the selkie should be a battle between linemates. Matthews defensively deserves it and marner played 10-15 shifts as a defender and didn’t look out of place except for a slightly weak back skate
Auston Mathews will go down as the greatest leaf of all time. He will be the highest goal scorer by the end of his contract and will end up with a statue at Socia Bank Arena.
He can score as many as he wants as long as the lafs don't win the cup. :) Seriously though...the guy is friggin amazing. No doubt. I may not like the lafs, but I'm not biased. I know talent when I see it. In this case it's more than obvious.
The stupid thing is at the beginning of the season when he had those first few hat tricks, everyone joked about how many he would get. Not so much of a joke now. I hope we get to see a 70g season.
With the nhl expansion in the 90’s, influx of international players, bigger goalie equipment and more talented goaltenders, meaner and more skilled defenders, introduction of technology for use in practice and in game, and actual rule changes, goal scoring rapidly decreased from the 80’s, to the 90’s, and especially into the 2000’s and 2010’s. I have 0 idea how they figure out the math for it but it makes sense from a common sense standpoint why era adjusted stats matter
every season they hype the leafs and every season the fall short. Until they prove they have what it takes nothing they do in the regular season really matters
Who's they, the fans? And no you're right, we should all just not care about AM's historic season cause he hasn't won a cup?. I guess none of McDavids accomplishment mean anything and no one should care as well, right?...right? and no one ever talked about OVI before he won a cup amirite. Yeah, Fuck off.
He’s having a historic goal scoring season. Like all time level scoring. People are allowed to and should respect that no matter what team he plays for
In an era that was objectively easier to score in. Respectfully, that's the case. It was easier then. It's not to disrespect him, but it is to put things into context.
Era adjusted stats don’t change the fact that most knowledable sport fans consider Gretzky the goat of all goats across sports. He’s not disrespected at all
You don't need to stop him... Just stop 2 of the other 3 and force the team to make up the difference. Maybe this year is the Leafs' year... but w teams like Boston, New York, Florida, Dallas, Vegas, Vancouver, Colorado and Edmonton... they'll all have a say about it.
He is having an absolutely great season. No doubt. But let's see how it translates in the Playoffs. I think that's Toronto's biggest fear. As a Panther fan, their series last year, I was expecting Matthews to have an impact and he was just...I would have believed you if you said he wasn't on the ice. But we defended him really well. Let's see how it goes for em. He's a great player.
It would be a fun series if the Leafs and Panthers meet up in the playoffs again this year. Last year the Leafs got slapped around by 3 or 4 Panthers. They've made some moves to negate that happening again. I think that would be a great series.
He was playing injured, and the Panthers doing cheap stuff, like slashing to his wrist and stuff like that, of course, gets to his performance. Just injure the guy and you don't have to worry about him. That has been Panther's method of success. He is still JUST under a PPG player in Playoffs. People just like to hate. The problem with the Leafs that Dubas has built has always been too much Forward power and too little Defensive power. Put that against a team that murders you when you're attacking (E.G. Bennett on Knies), the hottest Playoff Goalie apart from Vasylevsky and a super fast on the end-to-end and you got yourself a pretty hard matchup.
Where are you getting your stats? Teemu Salanne had 76 goals his rookie 1992 season after Brett Hulls 86 goals in 1991 so why wouldnt he count in the era? Mogilny 76 goals 1993...
I don't know. If they end up against the Bruins and play Reaves, they may do well because Bradley M is afraid of guys who can fight and the Panthers will be playing AHL players by round 2
YOU DID NOT JUST DISRESPECT ALEXANDER MOGILNY WHO ALSO SCORED THE SAME 76 GOALS IN THE SAME 92-93 SEASON BUT ONLY PLAYED 77 OF THE 84 WHILE TEEMU PLAYED ALL 84. sheeeeeesh.
im glad i wasnt the only one to notice, so much hate out there for Mogilny who sacrificed his life to come to the NHL and lead the way for so many greats. its shameful that he is not in the Hall of Fame
Plan the parade, no really though he’s insane and only getting better. If they can get the whole team playing together they have a good shot at going deeper than they have before. Maybe even to hoist the cup.
Why do people always add a disclaimer "in modern times". I am in my 70's and can still vividly remember Gretzky's 92nd goal. That was in 1982 and as far as I can recollect, times were pretty modern. The IBM 5150 was just released and the mobile phone had been on the market for 8 years by then. The US had already landed on the moon several times and other than last week's face plant, that little modern thing hasn't been repeated.
Definition of modern: relating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past. I don’t think 40 years ago is “recent times” Then again, it’s impossible to compare eras due to many factors, so you just need to compare them to their peers at the time.
the most obvious distinction in hockey would be the goaltending, look at what they wear and how they play from the 70s through the 90s. the players getting bigger and defending better is more subtle.
@@mcj44 : then why do we keep records if they can only be applied against other records of the same period. Wayne scored 212 points in his best season, please explain to me which one of your little prima donna players of the modern era is going to break that record and when.
I mean you joked about it but you are right, just wait for the playoff, that's how you stop him. He never ever produced a lot in playoff even though he gets amazing regular seasons year after year. Its not about being a hater, it's about Matthews never showing up in the playoff, thats just a fact.
Imagine tanking two years in a row perfectly enough to get players like Marner and Matthews at the top of their respective drafts. The odds of that happening are just ridiculous.
Idk about the whole "adjusted for era" concept. We are currently in a boon for NHL offensive production. Rule changes, streamlined goalie equipment, and cracking down on interference have opened up goal scoring again. Yes, Matthews is amazing and what he's doing is incredible.. but get used to it. We are entering another era where we are going to see some ridiculous offensive production.
Would like to see Matthews get 70, but with the games getting tighter points and goals are getting harder to come by. We will see. My guess he gets 65-67. I dont think he is getting 70 let alone 73.
Adjusting for era makes sense given how much the game has changed. The size of the league, the rise of technology, the legit increased size of goaltending equipment, the influx of international players, CBA, salary cap and rule changes leading to fewer dynastic teams, there’s a reason the league went from 8gpg to half that in a decade from the late 80’s to the 90’s. Whats funny though is all of those players you mentioned, still have the all time best seasons with era adjusted lol
He's like the opposite of McKinnon. He's slow and scores goals like a god. As opposed to being a speed demon who chocks up good goals and great assists. Mathews overall is a better player to watch because of his shooting ability but McKinnon is better overall.
It’s such an amazing feeling being able to watch him every game for your team

The Germans have a word for him, Raumdeuter, or space interpreter. Hes not the most physically gifted or athletically imposing. He’s not the fastest or strongest and he doesn’t have amazing skills on the ball, but his intelligence and quick thinking makes up for literally all of that and produces one of the best AMF of all time.
Go Auston! Go Mitch! 🤠
Great video. I'm waiting for the all of Nate's 100 points. Hopefully coming soon.
Matthew’s would be a great pick n roll in basketball holy
Even if the leafs dont win a cup. Getting to watch matthews every night makes watching all those bad leaf teams worth it.
It's because Leafs management has finally figured out how to build a line and a team around him.
He deserves a cup as much as our city does, and the Leafs franchise need to do all they can to make it happen ASAP!
I’m going to start my own channel with a few slow down edits, n cbc replays. Good on ya
Unrelated, cause there’s no where else to comment during current affairs (TOR vs NYR):
Respect for Rempe. That shit was a title fight, and he looked like a gentleman against Reeves savagery. Reeves had the power, but Remps had the reach, and I think he knew it.
I don't watch the nhl only the rangers but he does everything like panarian scores his goals with the wrister zibanigad hits the one timer and krieder scores up front Mathews does all
Rangers fan & you can't even spell Panarin, Zibanejad & Kreider properly 😂 You spelled Matthews wrong too btw but that's ok since he doesn't play for your team. But those other 3? 😂
@@Tam0dehow did his comment manage to make you salty 😂
Been fun to watch... even from a Lightning perspective...
Such a good video
since his wrist injury his toedrag is no longer there like his early years and he rarely scored from the circle. i always thought like what if he can score from the circle like ovi and stamkos. and then boom hes been lowkey working on it and you will see it all season of him scoring from the circle which i think is one of the most scariest spots to score from
It's been incredible to watch Ovi creep up on Gretzky with quite whispers of "what if" slowly changing to "when?" There were 17 years between Gretzky's last 50 goal season and Ovi's first (rookie season).
You can't. I'm a Habs fan and I'm happy for the Leafs fan!
another banger
Leafs are finally getting good
Been good for years, where have you been?
@@ShadyLurker16
I think he meant playoff good as in playoff success. The Leafs have been a good regular season team for a while now & that don't mean shit at the end of the day.
Glad the nhl is finally going back the the Olympics, I’m not even an American but I want to see him on team usa
Mitchy got a nasty apple last night the drop pass
What's this video going to be called tomorrow?
Question answered.
Honestly I think the selkie should be a battle between linemates. Matthews defensively deserves it and marner played 10-15 shifts as a defender and didn’t look out of place except for a slightly weak back skate
In Football (soccer) we have a saying.. Attack wins games.. but Defences wins championships.
He sure is hard to stop in the playoffs. Along with his team. Unstoppable!
He's never been hard to stop in the playoffs.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 unstoppable!!!!! You're welcome to come to our parade buddy
and yet they have been stopped every year, its ok you can come to Vegas and watch our parade again
@@jeffadventures1 all that matters is Aussie is the best goal scorer of all time! That's why you're obsessed with the leafs. Unstoppable!
I love Austy, hes my favorite... but he is stopped over and over. Very stoppable
Alternative title: how Austin Matthews scores goals, while not leading his team in scoring or being the biggest threat on the ice most nights
who knew M&M could be THIS good?
IDK, I'm more of a skittles guy 😁
This is crazy
This is fantastic, however, if you asked him there is only one thing that matters in this game. A cup. Thats it.
Auston Mathews will go down as the greatest leaf of all time. He will be the highest goal scorer by the end of his contract and will end up with a statue at Socia Bank Arena.
He can score as many as he wants as long as the lafs don't win the cup. :)
Seriously though...the guy is friggin amazing. No doubt. I may not like the lafs, but I'm not biased. I know talent when I see it. In this case it's more than obvious.
6'3"? Woah, I always thought he was smaller. Seeing him on the ice he always looked shorter than most.
What? lol.
Nah, Matthews looks big on the ice. You know who i thought was smaller than they really are? Ovechkin. And he's also 6'3" like Matthews.
The stupid thing is at the beginning of the season when he had those first few hat tricks, everyone joked about how many he would get. Not so much of a joke now. I hope we get to see a 70g season.
what does "adjusted for era" exactly mean? not hating just want to know
With the nhl expansion in the 90’s, influx of international players, bigger goalie equipment and more talented goaltenders, meaner and more skilled defenders, introduction of technology for use in practice and in game, and actual rule changes, goal scoring rapidly decreased from the 80’s, to the 90’s, and especially into the 2000’s and 2010’s. I have 0 idea how they figure out the math for it but it makes sense from a common sense standpoint why era adjusted stats matter
3:10 Legit, this footage reminds me of shark footage. The dude is an actual predator on the ice.
every season they hype the leafs and every season the fall short.
People are allowed to and should respect that no matter what team he plays for
Thank you for mentioning Mitch Marner #16! Without Marner, Matthews would not have anywhere near those 53 goals.
"Adjusted for era" is a blatant excuse to disrespect Gretzky. The man scored 92 and 87 goals in two seasons
Can you do a video on Matt Rempe next? I love your style of video and would like to see an analysis of him by you
It will stop itself. Those Spring tee times don't book themselves. #golfLeafsgolf
Amen ( coming from a Bruin fan, to whom it seemed "No Show Joe" Thornton was in a hurry to get to the lake every spring.)
Where are you getting your stats? Teemu Salanne had 76 goals his rookie 1992 season after Brett Hulls 86 goals in 1991 so why wouldnt he count in the era? Mogilny 76 goals 1993...
Having Matthews score 77-80 goals and then STILL manage to lose in the 1st round would be pure Leafs.
Ovi can have the scoring title for a couple years at least lol
I don’t think 40 years ago is “recent times”
Then again, it’s impossible to compare eras due to many factors, so you just need to compare them to their peers at the time.
Nobody went to the moon
the most obvious distinction in hockey would be the goaltending, look at what they wear and how they play from the 70s through the 90s. the players getting bigger and defending better is more subtle.
You do know it's not 1994 right?
@@mcj44 : then why do we keep records if they can only be applied against other records of the same period. Wayne scored 212 points in his best season, please explain to me which one of your little prima donna players of the modern era is going to break that record and when.
I mean you joked about it but you are right, just wait for the playoff, that's how you stop him. He never ever produced a lot in playoff even though he gets amazing regular seasons year after year. Its not about being a hater, it's about Matthews never showing up in the playoff, thats just a fact.
why do people always bring up Selannes 76 goals (84 games played) in 1993 but fail to mention Mogilny who scored 76 that year in only 77 games???
Most likely due to the fact Teemu was a rookie.
Imagine tanking two years in a row perfectly enough to get players like Marner and Matthews at the top of their respective drafts. The odds of that happening are just ridiculous.
Imagine being Edmonton and tanking for like 75% of your franchise history. Also, Marner wasn't 1st overall dummy.
Era adjustment counts that. It's based on league wide scoring.
I do agree he is an unreal talent, but ya'll need send me links of him dangling multiple opponents and scoring or creating his own shot.
Would like to see Matthews get 70, but with the games getting tighter points and goals are getting harder to come by.
We will see. My guess he gets 65-67. I dont think he is getting 70 let alone 73.
How to stop him? Florida didn’t have too much trouble shutting him down in round 2 last year.
my buddy is a big Matthews fan. naturally, i talk a lil shit. i don’t understand the hate Matthews gets
Adjusting for era... Ok. I still find it weird when you consider Gretzky's 92… 87... Hull's 86... Mario's 85...
It doesn't happen if the pass isn't there , so marner should be getting the credit for most of the goals
Matthews wouldnt be able to have that patience if it was back in the day...he'd be leveled on his ass for existing where he dares today
Wow, honestly hated on this guy for maybe "no reason" but gave me an entirely different outlook on the guy. Super impressive player - Avs fan
He's like the opposite of McKinnon. He's slow and scores goals like a god. As opposed to being a speed demon who chocks up good goals and great assists. Mathews overall is a better player to watch because of his shooting ability but McKinnon is better overall.
Matthews is not mackinnon fast but he is farrrr from slow lol
I personally don't know how to... But I'm sure Boston will in the first round
