Bro I am used sand from the oesteri lake and river sand as a substrate .I set up this tank 3 months before now all the plants are growing well bro.
You have done dirted tank / walstad method

You have to wait for 2 months for the tank to cycle or the fish will suffer get stressed are may die or
you can add some bacteria so the tank cycle will be done faster
