  • While I am in Guam I thought I would do some driving around the southern part of the island. It was quite beautiful. A lot of history to take in. Unfortunately with all the COVID shenanigans happening, I was not able to visit any museums as I had planned. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching it.

In 1958 I was stationed on Guam. I was 18 years old at the time. I lived off base with my sister and brother in law. He was stationed on Guam at the same time I was. We lived in a little village named Dededo. I forget the name of the street but we rented a house made from a quonset hut. Across the street from us was a small mom and pop grocery. The owners were considered to be rich by the locals. two doors down from us was the mayor's house. Most of the houses were single story dwellings. There were a few two story dwellings. About a block down from us was a home where they had goats. The goats were always climbing on cars and houses. Since we lived close to the mayor we were always invited to their fiestas. No matter what the occasion they had a fiesta. If there was a marriage they had a fiesta. If someone died they had a fiesta. With music, laughing, and dancing with all kinds of delicious food.
There was this kid who was approximately 15 years old. His name was Jesus. We would go tramping through the jungle where he would point out shells fired from ships during the pacific war that failed to explode. They were half buried in the dirt. I also found a grenade.
There were no street lights so if you ventured out in the dark you could be sure of a crunch underfoot. You just stepped on a huge snail that seems only to come out at night.
I fell in love with a Guamanian girl while I was there. Her name was Anita Cruz. She probably met some Air Force or Navy guy. No telling where she could be now. I still miss her as well as the island. But not as it is today. Back then there were no apartment complexes or hi-rise buildings. No tv or internet. No supermarkets. Nothing to attract tourist like today. The beaches were mostly empty although there was some snorkeling and swimming. They had a few bars and cafes but nothing fancy. They did have a university though. I would love to go back to the rock to visit but I know it wouldn't be the same so I'll just live with my memories.

and I can honestly say it was the most enjoyable time of my career.I was there for Super Typhoon Paka 1997🙃

ha, looks exactly the same when I was there back in 2005. Even swung by the Outback Steakhouse coming out of your hotel (where I normally began the night). And 04:19 on the right, Club G-spot, where I usually ended up the night hehe
