WHY STILL WRITING LETTERS IN THE 21st CENTURY?

  • Why still writing letters in our modern times ? I started to write more regularly letters to my friends about 2 years ago, and I love this old fashioned, slower, more meaningful way to communicate. And I love to do it using my quill and some ink . Hope this little video will inspire you to leave your phone and computer and go back to paper once in a while.

About 3 months ago, after many years of just emailing and texting, I decided to pick up my fountain pen and paper again and begin to practice handwriting letters and journals. I now spend a few quiet hours every week sitting at my desk and writing. It's one of the best things I could have done, it's so rewarding and calming

Oh great! That's wonderful that you have found the path to your fountain pen and paper again and use them joyfully every week ! Writing on paper like, journaling or letters that is so calming and peaceful as you say no typing on computer would never trigger that feeling...

I love to write letters, a dying art. My Mother and Aunts always wrote beautiful letters and had lovely penmanship. I can’t even find pretty stationary anymore. Makes me sad for times past.

Oh really, I think they are places where you can still find pretty papers and stationary online , there are some correspondances resistants in this world even if less people use it . But we can do what we can in our own scale to keep it alive ;)

I love writing. I journal daily. I don’t write letters because no one ever writes back. But I guess I shouldn’t let that stop me. ❤

No it shouldn't stop you! Among the friends I correspond with, one friend doesn't like to write on paper but she adores receiving my letters and she replies to me with her emails when she gets them and it's fine , we are good friends so it works too, and I don't mind that;)

Earlier this year my daughter and I opened up our Etsy store. I decided I was going to send a hand written letter to each customer. Well I wasn't expecting the response we got. They love receiving the hand written letter, I absolutely love writing them and I decided this year to write more letters to people. Birthdays, holidays etc. Now to get some ink for my pen and start practicing with that.
Thank you again Laetitia for another beautiful episode 😊 xx

Such a rich video, Laetitia, so expressive and wondrous. Seeing you actually writing is captivating....your copperplate script is so elegant and fine. As a child learning cursive writing we used 'dip pens with nibs (quills) and ink, our school desks had a 'hole' where a small pottery inkwell was inserted.....no ballpoint pens yet! This resonates so strongly with me....your description of showing respect to those you write to...."....it's like dressing your words in a beautiful outfit....." I love that very much. Thank you, Laetitia.

Thank you Lorraine yes I know these desks, when I was 6 years old we still had these desks in my classroom only for a handul of years before they changed them, these holes were very mysterious I wish I had known this time you talk about...., avoiding stains were also part of the learning practise of writing which children these days have no idea ! Thank you , yes it's really that for me, glad you share this idea too! Yes Let's stay elegant in our outfit and in our writing ;) Thank you♥

Oh, I so enjoyed this post. I loved writing letters to my many aunts years ago and getting their letters in return, but sadly they have all passed away. I enjoyed opening the mailbox and finding an envelope with a handwritten address and lovely stamp, and especially seeing a blue airmail envelope that would come from my husband's British aunt and uncle.
With the Internet it seems silly to write a letter to someone you are constantly "speaking" with online. I want to start back writing letters and sending cute postcards, and I might even disappear from being easily accessible on the computer. 😄 One day I might just do that.
    Thanks for your lovely post.

Oh I don't think it's silly , it's just a habit to create, among my correspondants, I have a friend who lives 1 hour away from me and now we only write and see each other in the flesh but don't really call anymore, and once in a while we can send a practical message digitally for something urgent but otherwise it's all paper and it works and it's fun ! yes being less accessible on the computer might be a good strategy !Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your story with letters. :)

I don't think anyone would appreciate a handwritten letter from me. I received my first laptop at quite a young age and so handwriting took a back seat to typing. I think one can still communicate nicely through email or chat. One can still take the time to sit down and write a meaningful message.
Of course, a hand written, mailed letter will have more impact, but perhaps this new age world has made me too impatient to fully appreciate that.

Sure I didn't mean it was impossible, it is just more rare because of the specificity of the tool itself and as you say yourself because of the lack of patience tgis tool has created in us. I love this video. Writing has always been very special to me, I grew up with my mother insisting on using Basildon Bond English writing paper, and I have the writing cases of my great grandmother and grandmother with all the years of family correspondance going back to the early 1800ds. All the letters about births, marriages, holidays and deaths and beautiful greeting and post cards. I so agree with you about texting and emails and I worry about there being no historical records for future generations, there will be a huge gap of missing all the daily details of peoples lives. I stopped for a while now using my fountain pen, and your quill pen so inspires me! I must find one that doesn't scratch and splutter! Maybe Bic will deliver to me as I have jars full of second hand pens I have tried! Your handwriting is so so beautiful and inspiring! Do you know the fabulous shop in Paris called Melodies Graphiques? It is on Instagram the have the most fabulous items for anyone interested in writing and are dedicated to the art!

Oh nice so precious to haveall these correspondances, wow, early 1800s that's impressive and very rare !!! It's true our time will leave nothing behind it , yes there will be a gap, hinsetly this bic one works well if used one the right soft paper , now they need to be cleaned eachtime yyou used them or if the ink dries on them they dont write well anymore. • @jenfries6417
      @jenfries6417 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Merveillesenpapier Thank you so much for the pen info! I won't actually recommend natural walnut ink to you because the real stuff cannot be archival for artworks or writing meant to be cherished, because walnut is naturally extremely acidic. I like to write my notes and plans with it because it looks beautiful, but for drawings and writing to keep, I use regular drawing inks or fountain pen inks. But it is a lot of fun to find or even make inks and paints from natural plant materials. I just caution everyone to do their research and maybe take a class first, because so many plants that can be used for writing and drawing have issues such as fading, or acidity, or even being poisonous. Always use caution!
