Love both these armies! The brightly-painted dwarves on goblin green bases are a fantastic look, and the red tomb kings were very striking!
You do have to have line of sight for a charge before you use drilled
I agree with that myself.
Agree. You declare the charge before the drilled move, so you must meet the conditions of declaring a charge first.
It's not 100% clear in the errata, but it does cover that units in Marching Column may declare charges if they have the Drilled rule, since they can use their rule to redress and make a legal charge. On this basis, I'm currently assuming this also includes expanding arc of sight by redressing the ranks. The unit is using a rule it has in order to complete a charge.
No, the part with the marching column didn't work here. The problem is the order. Drilled is working only before the movement, but charging is after the declaring charges step. But to declare a charge, to make the charge move, you must have LoS to the target you will charge. Without LoS, no declaration, without declaration, no move
@Svensson86 I understand what you're saying, but you're also not allowed to declare a charge while in marching column. So having the Drilled rule allows you to declare a charge that will only be legal after you've redressed your ranks.
Big thing skirmishers only become as wide as what they are in btb with. Great report
Yes. That's why I run my Rangers as Open Order.
You only declare the unit is charging, it doesnt have to have valid targets when it goes to charge you redress then choose target
The community has suggested that you need LoS to a unit in order to actually declare a charge.
Enjoyed the report as ever. It did feel like you snatched defeat from the jaws of victory but were rather unlucky to do so. Still some things that I don't much like about the game - your opponent didn't seem to do much 'right' but still ended up with the win just by having a dragon that killed a load of stuff and doesn't crumble away when they've screwed up. Probably quite a friendly list from them though aside from the dragon I guess.
Find it hard to imagine that using the irondrakes as a detachment would have any mileage as sensible opponents are going to target the drakes first and dwarfs aren't mobile enough to stop them. And in the case where you want your ironbreakers in combat and are struggling to making that happen I don't see how threatening your opponent with a stand and shoot from a load of drakes is going to encourage them to make the charge you want them to. Happy to be proved wrong of course, but won't be considering it until I see someone else have success with it.
As far as the arcane journal is concerned got to hope for some more useful runes. Really hope that if they do something to help slayers become more effective that it carries over into using them in the grand army, but fear that won't be the case.
Your retreat from boney seems correct to me.
I literally do not understand Irondrakes. I keep hearing everyone rave about them, but I have watched probably every Dwarf batrep on TH-cam and virtually every game I see them in, they do absolutely nothing before being soundly slaughtered to a man. Someone help me understand... Why would you ever include them in a list. I want to love them.
High Ballistic Skill and high Strength of their weapons, plus good armour and decent combat ability. Stand & Shoot from short distance. I always seem to miss with the Trollhammer, but the regular guns have done well against Knights and similar unit types. I'm messing with the size of the unit to find the perfect number. I agree that 5 is a bit hit and miss, and sometimes do nothing before dying horribly.
I watched many of your reports, but do you see that it allways comes to the same issues when losing? I think you are always stretched to wide and dont protect your warmachines. Why not forming a castle? You had the perfect Layout in this match, and you could have easily put all of them on the hill. Shield them with units with stubborn and shieldwall. You can still play that silly linehammer with your Rangers 😉
If I make a corner castle and my opponent decides the best plan is not to attack me, it'll make for some very boring battle reports.
@@Andy2D6 you have warmachines, he has no choice but to attack 😉

After a lot of try and error playing with dwarfs i came to the conclusion that dwarfs are only viable with a death star
I haven't try this list yet, i will in 4 days but hear me out
2k points
Thane bsb, king, runesmith all in a 15 hammerer unit ready on a march column deployed against something i have the potential to charge and also earn points
An engineer with a cannon and a grunge thrower in one corner
4 5unit quarrellers mostly for deployment reasons(avoid scouts in my deployment zone), give me time to deploy my death star and some possibly as chaff for my artillery corner
21 rangers open order so i can fill core points and hopefully protect one flank of my hammerers, (we have a max 10 file rule in our friend group cause linehammer sucks) so not the most efficient but what can you do
3 gyro in one unit with multimission (protect hammerer flank, clear chaff or target sonething juicy
In my games so farthe only units that overperform are gyros and rangers, my goal is that they will earn more points or keep it even, the artillery corner is a wildcard but still it will allocate mobile units to that flank
The only issue on paper (cause i bet that by gamenight more will come) is that i have no reliable way to deal with these 9-10 wound monstrosities other than combat res
Thoughts?
Btw, back in warhammer after a looong time, 6th edition if i remember correctly 😅
Lovely battle report!!!
Do you really need to rotate the cannon? It’s on 50x50, so same footprint either way. If your opponent has an issue with that, then … not sure what to say
The cannon not so much, but the machines that use BS might end up in a situation where rotating a bit gives them an unobscured view of an enemy unit.
@@Andy2D6 ok, good point
