My parents and I had a Kenmore canister bought in 2013, straight out of the box it had so many issues. Kenmore is definitely one of those brands that you can take or leave. Thank you for this video!

I had a Sears Kenmore Progressive canister vac ... and finally the brush head motor finally went out.
I called the phone number on the bottom of the power head. A very nice lady answered, and as I read the serial number, she said, "I'm sorry, we don't have parts for any parts over 30 years old."
So, I bought a new SEBO E3. I'm pretty sure I can make it last the next 30 years-or until I die, which ever comes first (and it's probably a race).

      @melissanotthewebsbusiness7272 ปีที่แล้ว

They tried to recommend one for me, because my old Powermate assembly no longer works: But frankly, the SEBO doesn't look nearly as easy to change attachments with the foot pedal, nor does it have the range of attachments this one does--including the mini stair Powermate!--and it *starts* at $800, and accessories are extra!
I'm hoping a reset will sell it, otherwise I'm looking for a replacement motorhead, or complete Powermate assembly.

@@melissanotthewebsbusiness7272 Agree, there are some pros and cons.
The good news is the SEBO is a commercial grade machine for home use. It's very quiet, and I do believe it'll last until I die.
Good luck however it works out!

So far I've only watched 5 min into the video. I would agree with you on the air leakage. But I will say i have mine for over 17 yrs. And it has never failed me. (Until last week,)the motor was emitting a burnt brushes smell. MY POINT IS, IT GAVE ME MORE THAN I EVER EXPECTED IT TO.
2ND POINT.. You said $300 or $400 dollars. No sir they were and are $649.00 to $799.99
But i was and am completely satisfied with that unit. No broken wheel never broke a belt. Just the bag leakage and extension wand leaking that bothered me. Thank you for your video. Could you make one on motor replacement or if there are brushes for the motor. Thank you

You're referring to a different model of Kenmore.
What's your referring to would it be a Panasonic machine different than this but this is a copy of that.

    Great repair video.
Late to the party but the Kenmore canister is my wife's favorite vacuum. We bought one new years ago and I keep an eye out for garage sales for additional machines. We have two in the house in constant usage and another one in the shed along with some other spare parts. I just trashed a base unit with a burned out motor. Biggest problem we have had is electrical problems on the hose and brittle plastic on hose clips.

Still have the Kenmore canisters cleaning both offices. They are from the 80's. Got some uprights thru the years that threw dust all over. Always back to the cannisters. Have Kenmore Progressives at both houses. 20+ years old and no issues. Paid around $500 for them during big sales. I cannot think of a better bang for buck. Even after factoring annual filter changes. Bought this exact cannister for my Aunt. Said today still going after 2 decades and no issues. Has tried other expensive cannisters but dont clean as well. She was as shocked by this video as I was.

I'm still using my 1989 canister older version of this, and find to clean much better than many other things I've tried never cleaned as well and failed catastrophically far faster - whereas this very frequently used one just kept working (well). Yes, the bag and filters are not as easy to install and don't seal as well as they should, but it has been the best cleaning and most reliable vac I've ever owned. The level adjuster broke (only) a decade ago, but it's perfect for my low carpeting without it. But the dirt sensor has has failed and I'm trying to understand how to debug and fix, if possible, Any advice from anyone welcome.

I'm sorry... I don't care how great a canister vacuum works and is easy to use.... if there's not a proper seal on the bag.....everything great about the vacuum falls apart because that is a MAJOR flaw... the point is to be cleaning and dirt going into the bag.... if some of that dirt misses the bag and ends up in the vacuum cleaner itself... it feels almost pointless

I noticed you put the motor filter in backwards: 24:12. Every vacuum I've ever owned has always been full of dust and dirt. Don't complain too too much because if these things were made up to your standards they would never break and you would be out of business. Trying to fix the power wand was one of the last things I was able to do with my dad before he passed of cancer. We couldn't figure it out and I remember noticing how thin his arms were getting. My brother ended up having to take it to a repair person. When it came back, it worked, but it always smelled bad, like old barf or something. I took this vacuum home with me when we had to clean out my parents' house. It still works, but I've never been able to solve that smell problem...Maybe one day I'll watch your video in slow motion and take the whole thing apart and see what's going on. Thanks for making the video.

As far as I’m concerned Kenmore hasn’t made a good canister vacuum since the late 1970s Lady Kenmore machines that were made by Whirlpool and marketed by Sears in America under the agreement that Whirlpool stopped selling their machines in vacuum shops.

I’ve had my Kenmore Progressive since 2000. 24 years. My bags are clothe and have the rubber gasket. I also change the filters at least annually. When I had pets I changed them twice a year. It’s just starting to shut off on it’s own occasionally when I pull on the hose. Not sure if it’s the hose or the swivel piece. If I put gentle pressure on the swivel piece, it runs again. Any suggestions.

Looks like that owner gave their vacuum a free fall ride down the stairs a few times. So, that HEPA filter at the end is just for looks, right? Since there is obviously so much air leaking out elsewhere. I know in the 90's it was popular to say the vacuum had HEPA filtration, even though it was actually meaningless, because the system wasn't sealed. I see the HEPA filter on my machine has popped its seams, so it wasn't doing its job either. The important filter here is the pre-motor filter. Cool.

the worst vacuum i worked on was a panasonic direct drive , iwas one of the first ones. had a trigger to turn on and a slider to lock the trigger on .sold it to a friend , was going to wash his carpets and was going to use his vacuum , to my suprise the roller went backwards . i felt like an idiot for selling that to him like that and didnt even realize why it wasnt working right. took it apart a tried to get back to gether but it was a nightmare ,was sandwiched by 2 halfs and just refused to go back together. junked it . gave him a kenmore direct drive . that works.

Good video thanks. Contemplating the tear down and dishwashing all the plastic on a freecycle aquired Progressive Whisperbelt 216.20813003 Kenmore I got (free) today. Fairly clean and runs well, great suction. Found all the dust you had everywhere. The white poly fuzz side of the motor filter faces the bag though I believe, or all the fuzzy fine fiber will end up in the motor. The coarse spongy side might catch any that gets pulled thru to the "darkside" Luke.:-)
Or not....;-) Great demo of all the limitations of this machines HEPA shortcomings. Is there a way to easily remedy some of these "leaks" on the intake and the exhaust? You mentioned a bag gasket, holes in wheels, incomplete or inadequate gasket material, etc. Any simple fixes with silicone or some other angle for those of us with allergies and no $$$ to buy a new machine?

Waiting for a response because I have the same questions as I wait for my used Kenmore. Had a Kenmore 4.1 or something like that when I was a kid, and I miss it dearly since I've been disappointed in every vacuum since. I think the air leakage around the bag was always the only thing really that annoyed us. Fix that, and it's a pretty great machine for an end-user at least.

    -The Olympia One (from Electrolux)
    -The Silverado (from Electrolux too)
-The Diamond Jubilee (also from Electrolux)
-Any of those of the Hi-Tech and LE models from the 1980's (from Electrolux as well)

You have to admit that each was at least built better than the Sears in on the bench.

    • @jessicah3450

This vacuum in the video was from an interesting time in history. The intro of HEPA filters which was mainly just for looks. The consumer driven push from bagged to bagless vacuums. Sears as a company starting to seriously fail, thus outsourcing manufacturing to the lowest bidder. This vacuum is a result of a lot of that.
Miele, Electrolux, and Sebo all have more stable histories than Kenmore. Test drive some at your local vacuum store and see which ones feel nice. This vacuum in the video, what annoys me is it is way too lightweight for the brushroll, so it hops around on low-medium pile carpet. Sometimes you gotta use something to know if you like it or not. I do like this vacuum for cleaning things above the floor.

I have a Kenmore progressive canister vacuum I bought in 2003, for around $300....the vacuum I had prior to that was also a Kenmore canister I bought in 1978, replaced it's motor in 2005, had to dispose of that in 2016 even though it was still working......neither one of them are in as bad shape as the one you are working on......my progressive works like a champ. I had to replace the plug on it this year as one of the tongs broke off, my fault I accidentally stepped on the plug I have replaced both wheels , belt and plug myself. Changed bags and filter often, and just bought new ones yesterday.......I do get the gasket missing on bag, however you can add that yourself......really disappointed with your bad attitude...btw, I am a woman .

Yes, I see the picture now the manufacturer took short cuts in the design to keep the cost down and a very common practice. So none of the canister vacuum cleaners is worth the investment. One thing to keep in mind my prior comment about growing up on the Kenmore canister brand was pretty much was before I ventured into the German manufacturer brands
