For anyone having trouble making the command prompt recognize java, what i did was copying the same address for the path in environment variables to the path in user variables. It worked perfectly for me after that. Goodluck!

New users can directly download latest version "jdk SE 21" , after installing paste the JDK/bin path to your environment variable and apply, it worked for me
You should probably download OpenJDK, as that is the reference installation. Oracle are just one of many other Java distributions. If you install JDK, you should really not need to add JRE to your path, and thus no need for JAVA_HOME

If your're using Windows 8 you can't double click open the "Path". So what you need to do is to click on it and edit and paste this instead of both jdk and jre paths. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-10.0.2\bin;C:\Program Files\Java\jre-10.0.2\bin and then do the JAVA_HOME path after this.

Java does not change much. You can start now if you wish so.

You can install jre seprately..
maybe i'm late but i think the issue is that you are looking in program x86 and not the normal one

its on another folder, by default program files x86 or just program files
better way is in user variable create new path paste upto jdk bin & again in user new path paste upto jdk lib & it will be recognized
